Downend Dental Practice, Bristol

I went to Downend Dental Practice for private treatment as I needed implants and unfortunately my NHS dentist (who is very thorough), does not carry out implant treatment.

After my initial check up and scans, the private dentist advised me that as well as needing implants, I also needed further remedial work - six fillings costing just under £1,000 on top of the implant charges!! I was extremely confused and upset as I had only just been to my own dentist who had not detected all this dental work. The cost of the work totalled over £5,600! I was terribly upset but decided to go ahead with all the work as I wanted to trust my new dentist and get the job over and done with all under "one roof". So I took out a payment plan to cover the costs.

Whist carrying out dental work my private dentist came across a problem with one of my teeth which required temporary packing and a temporary filling for which he charged me a further £500. Three months later I returned and he carried out more root canal treatment on that same tooth and put a permanent filling in for which I was charged another £220. Since then I have received letters asking me to pay my debt of £1,027 which was totally incorrect. The dental practice have finally admitted they have made a mistake by charging me double what I owe for the extra treatment carried out. However, they are still charging me for an extra filling I never even had!!! The dentist refuses to speak with me so I have no option than to go and seek legal proceedings. The whole experience has been a terrible nightmare and very upsetting. I urge prospective patients to look elsewhere as this practice is extremely unprofessional, uncaring and total rip off merchants.

My partner went to this dentist on Wednesday 24th October to fill out the forms to join this practise he told them he was in terrible pain with a chipped tooth and needed urgent treatment so they made an appointment for the next day my partner was seen by a dentist who told him he needed 2 teeth out and 2 fillings when he went to the desk he was told the only appointment they could offer was 22nd November to which i pointed out this was far to long away he's had no sleep and taking lots of pain killers they then offered 12th November i pointed out again this was not good enough the dentist did not even give any medication to help with the pain i asked why they didn't tell him when he filled the forms out they were very booked up and he would have to be in pain for another 18 days this is a very poor set up and I advise anyone who is thinking of joining DONT we wont be going back.

The Dental Practice I am complaining about has six Dentists, who's names are preceded by 'Doctor' (who are not actually Doctors of anything).

After recently moving to our present area, we were overjoyed to be welcomed as new NHS patients.

My wifes first visit for a check-up was handed a Treatment Plan for 'necessary' work on her teeth (after not knowingly suffering any problems)costing a total £2879.10 not including the examination cost.

Not wishing to accept the plan,my wife visited another local Dental Practice,where the 'qualified'Dentist carried out a very thorough examination,stating that she had no dental problems,charged £16.50, and offered a further examination in six months.

I believe that the Downend Practice is guilty of an attempted 'Rip-Off',and I am writing this as a warning,and to shop around, as there are other Practices available for treatment here in the Bristol area.

This has also ben reported to the General Dental Council, who are investigating this complaint.

My son who had previously visited the same Practice, was offered treatment costing over £24,000 (laughable), for treatment that he received elsewhere for just over £2,200 (a saving of over £20,000).
