“TERRIBLE CHARTER COMPANY”

★☆☆☆☆

written by 390Maloney on 30/09/2018

The yacht and holiday we booked with Corfu Yachting did not materialise when we arrived at Gouvia Marina, even though we had previously paid in full. We had paid for, on Corfu Yachting's recommendation, a Bavaria 41 (2004) which we thought was more than adequate for the needs of my wife and me. On arrival at the marina we were told, without consultation, we would have to have a Bavaria 46 - Filotimo (1998). Although there were some enjoyable elements to sailing this boat it is not what we would have chosen. The SAFETY CERTIFICATE with the boat's papers expired 5 months earlier, the VHF was faulty and would not have given our position in an emergency and the staff were unable to fix it, there was safety line missing on the deck, the companionway steps fell on top of one of us while using them causing injury (examination showed they had previously been very badly repaired), the supplied life jackets (until we complained) were ancient, and totally unsuitable for sailing in, the Heikell pilot guide was printed in 1998, and the on-board catering equipment was filthy and unusable, hob burners giving repeated trouble etc. The spare gas cylinder was provided empty, and the fuel gauge did not work. (Refueling by us after a few days cost us E150, so the tank was not full as we were told when we took the boat. On the first night out we could not drop or raise the anchor. There is no rib as advertised on the website to come to our aid. We wasted a day going back to the marina, and eventually, amidst great reluctance, got a new chain. We had booked a 2 week flotilla for the North and South Ionian, and were provided in an email months earlier with likely stops in the South Ionian. On arrival we learned that the flotilla had nothing to do with Corfu Yachting, and the flotilla company we were attached to did not run 2 week flotillas - only one week in the North. Although they tried to be helpful we were reduced to doing 2 x 1 week North flots. This is not what we signed for or paid for. No one from Corfu Yachting was available to meet us on the Friday afternoon we returned the boat, not on the Saturday morning before we went to the airport. All attempts to resolve this hugely disappointing situation have met with no responses whatsoever - either email or text. THIS BOAT was not in a fit state to be on a list to be chartered. CORFU YACHTING's website is totally misleading in a number of respects, and we urge great caution if anyone is thinking of using them. It is hugely disappointing. We have done bareboat or flotilla in Greece for many many years, and have always been treated well by Greek people, which has given us a love and respect for them and their country. This guy has let himself and his nation down really really badly. It is particularly disappointing that he has refused all communication since we returned the boat and left it in good order, awaiting it's end of holiday clean we believed we had organised.

“Worst Company - Do not Charter a Sailing Boat from them”

★☆☆☆☆

written by parip on 20/08/2013

We had arranged to charter a sailing boat from Corfu Yachting company. Before sending the money over to them for the boat they were very polite and cooperative. The big day has come and we were all very excited to start our sailing trip. We arrived to the marina only to realise that the boat wasn't ready and we had to wait for 5 hours as it hadn't been cleaned on the inside. Once we mentioned it to the owners they told us that in the contract it's written that we should get the boat at 5pm and ordered us to Get Out of their office. Complete lack of professionalism and rudeness. The boat although wasn't old it was in very bad condition and the engine stopped working while we were in the middle of the sea and there was no wind whatsoever to open the sails. We missed one whole of our 7 days trip as we had to go to a marina and wait for the owner's brother to come and fix the engine. No apology from the brother or anything at all. The owner of this small and awful company didn't even call our skipper to see what happened and if the problem was fixed. We love sailing and this wasn't the first time for us. The other companies that we have used in the past were amazing and because of them this year's experience has been bad. Do not charter a boat from them!!!

Nikos_Avlonitis's Response to parip's Review

Written on: 22/02/2015

Dear Michali,

First of all I would like to thank you for your message as it gives me the opportunity to respond to a few misunderstandings created by your side.
You have correctly mentioned the fact that I told you that we would try to deliver the yacht before the arranged time if this would be possible by our side, but your demand for the delivery of the yacht before the time mentioned in the charter-party is in any case absurd.
I will not respond to the fact that your muscled friend made a lot of fuss in the office and even in the jetty because I consider that it underestimates our intelligence.
Anyway, you don't mention anywhere the fact that you had the yacht deliver 2 hours earlier.
You also don't mention the fact that the engine as you said was functioning properly during the last two days of your trip, which is possibly a result of miss usage during the preceding days. The outboard during your return, as you mentioned was not functioning seeing that the fuel tank and the carburettor were full of water.
During the last day the engine stopped functioning due to the remains of petroleum in the filters, a very common damage, which every captain with or without experience should know how to deal with, replacing the filters and performing vaporization in order to make the engine function again. Your captain was ignorant and you should demand the return of a part of his compensation in my opinion. I also have to mention that with your choice, regarding the captain, you put in danger all the members of the crew as it is completely absurd to start the engine and the yacht with the dock power supply on 220 V!
You haven't also mentioned anywhere the fact that you haven't finally paid the yacht cleaning.

Have a nice winter,

Nikos Avlonitis
