“Long wait to be threatened”

★★☆☆☆

written by jem53 on 21/06/2021

Friday May 21 I visited Jim Glover on the River in Tulsa and after an all afternoon ordeal signed the contract Let me say the salesmen are professional used car salesmen! I had to ask several times for my keys before the manager told them it was okay. I was thinking of leaving. Finally the finance guy finished the deal. I couldn.t drive the van home because they had to service and detail the van. Okay. Wednesday May 26 I called Jim Clover on the River at approximately 11:00 and was informed my van would be ready in 2 to 3 hours. We arrived approximately 1:00 and was informed my van wasn't ready. They had to get a tail-light bulb. We asked around 5:30 and the pro used car salesman informed us my van just entered detailing. My frazzled patience couldn't believe the pros at Jim Glover couldn't service a vehicle that was sold in 5 days. I admittedly said I will clean my van. The manager said they contracted out the detailing so had no say to how they do the work. He said he would call and have them stop what they were doing. My van was delivered with the same plastic bag in the back. The manager suggested to my wife to return next week for detailing. She called Monday and the pro salesman suggested next week due to rainy weather. He said he would call. Jim Glover salesman didn't call. My wife called several times over the week without any return calls. Her last call she was informed the particular pro had a family issue and was out. Friday June 19 Fort Sill Credit Union finally called to verify contract. Monday my wife contacted Jim Glover to ask about resolving the problem of the thirty day tag expiring. During this conversation the detailing issue came uo. The business manager promised to check into it, The pro used car salesman called, told my wife she was supposed to call. Then stated because you said you had to wait 5 hours you will have to wait when you bring the van in! Ah, could the long wait I endured during the entire process be because I irritated the pro salesman at Jim Glover on the River in Tulsa?

“UNLIMITED IS VERY LIMITED!!”

★★☆☆☆

written by yahooguy on 14/06/2015

I wanted to purchase two cars from a dealer only so I purchased the unlimited report package for $54.95. I started looking at cars online and ran a few vin numbers of cars I was interested in. As soon as I hit 5 reports it would not let me do any more VIN number reports which is the only way you can run a report from a dealer. It said I can only run 5 reports with the "unlimited" package and unlimited license plate runs only and it is designed for buying from a personal seller with a license plate. When I signed up it did not say limited vin number reports anywhere noticeable. ( it was probably tucked in the small writing)  MISSLEADING!!!!

“Why did I pay for this”

written by Crashcar on 25/03/2014

I bought a 2010 Suburban. It's in great shape. The paint is clean and seems to run well. I ran a car fax on it before I got it and found no issued. I ran into the previous owner at the GMC dealership that I was having it service at and he told me the paint was clean because it was in a recent $4,500 wreck. He went in to tell me it was the 3 rd $4,500 wreck the SUV had. (2 deer and a driver who pulled out in front of him) Since I was at the dealer I asked why the accidents were not on the car fax. They went on to explain to me that car fax people pay dealerships for "our" data (oil changes, repairs, crashes) the GMC dealership I was at does not share customers data, ever. So they might be losing a bit of money but our personal information is safe. The down side is that CRITICAL information is not passed on to car fax. I like the idea that my data is safe but would have liked to have known about the $13,500 worth of accidents. I won't be buying another car fax.

“Bought a lemon. Carfax gave glowing review.”

I recently purchased a Carfax which implied the Lincoln Navigator I was considering was in great shape. I bought it and when I was showing my beautiful car to a friend, I noticed some bubbling under the paint on the rear rocker panel under the rear passengeer door. When I felt under the rocker panel my fingers went right through and huge pices of rust fell leaving a hole I could put 2 fists through. The whole rocker panel was rusted out. I was lucky to have the dealer take it back. I had to take a lecture that I bought it as is, and that I knew I was buying a car in rough condition. I was browbeaten by the sales manager who tried to make me feel like a fool and I should keep the car. It was in GREAT condition until I found the rust problem. DO NOT GO TO IMPORTS LIMITED IN ST. LOUIS TO BUY A CAR. They make you hold a sign that says "I'm buying this car as is and am responsible for all further repairs and then take your picture." Makes you feel like a fool. They give you a hard time if you want to take your selection to a mechanic of your choice to have it inspected beforehand. "They don't have the time for this."

Well, I bought a carfax b4 I get a car on criagslist, but hen I went to the DMV, they told me I couldn't register the car, cuz the car hasn't been paid it off. In the carfax report didn't say anything about that, I wish they can include if a car is been paid it off or not. That will be a great help too, for whoever wants to get a car and it doesn't have that much experience on te vehicles market. Just like me. Now I can't do nothing with te car. I ask this person for my $ back. But I haven't heard from him at all. So... I hope carfax will take that in consideration.

Well, that goes beyond CARFAX...you are supposed to "look" at the Title before handing over any money. Just as an FYI, CARFAX can't drive or pay for cars either... ; )

“Not helpful for important details”

★★☆☆☆

written by on 23/01/2014

While carfax does provide you useful information on accident history, a lot of the information is useless. Experian's Autocheck product is cheaper and has the same information... In my case the important information I needed was that the car I purchased had been repossessed and held in inventory for 3 years. This information was unavailable until after I bought the car and realized many issues related to this including poor maintenance and years of unpaid registration. I would have thought that would be on the DMV records, but it was not on the carfax report. This omission of important information contributed to me getting ripped off.

I emailed Carfax regarding an issue with being able to run searches. I could only run a fax if I had the license plate number. I signed up for unlimited searches.

Carfax is not the whole story on a used car. They only report what they have. So if a Car gets by that has been in a flood and the owner never turns it in? How can carfax no? Have someone look at it you trust! Carfax is only a tool.

“Concept is OK, buy needs improvment. Expensive.”

written by gf724 on 29/10/2013

I was torn between CarProof and CarFax. I ended up picking Carfax because I thought it would be cheaper, and they offered a flat rate for unlimited searches. BUT, the unlimited version is only available in the US - you max out at 5 searches in Canada. AND, if you're not careful, Carfax lets you automatcially choose the Unlimited version (even with a Canadian IP address) for more money!! AND, to top it off, no where did I see an expiry date on the 5 searches. It turns out they expire after 1 month! That's rediculous!!! I feel robbed. So...other than fixes these issues, I have one more recommendation - although it would take more work, I'd be willing to pay and additinal fee if they offered the ability to see the Detailed Estimate Sheet from the insurance adjuster, so I can see the type of damage that occurred for each claim. I could get these from my local insurance agency, if the car was inspected in my province, but not for cars claimed in other provinces. Customer service also took 5 days to get back to me on an account/password issue.

“Car review not accurate”

★★☆☆☆

written by on 30/09/2013

I purchased carfax and the car that I purchased listed that there were no accidents and that the car had no known maintenance problems. The car in fact had been in an accident and somehow not reported and then the $16k lemon cost me an additional $4k to get it running. Was never able to drive it from the purchased destination to my home. I had to rent a car dolley to get the car to my house. The dealer refused to take the car back. I would have loved to have known all of the mechanical problems prior to the purchase, but carfax did not reveal the problems.

“My worst used car purchase ever”

★★☆☆☆

written by carfaxreview on 30/08/2013

On August 10, 2013 I purchased a 98 Honda Civic from MotoMafia. Both Josh the owner and Thad the salesman were involved in the sale. I insisted on a carfax, which I had to purchase myself and I was able to run on the lot from my phone. Carfax indicated clean title, no accidents, and some maintenance. It also listed 5 previous owners. It valued the car considerably above list price. I paid cash and it came as is. However, both Thad and Josh told me repeatedly that the car was checked over thoroughly by them, state inspected with emissions and ready for the road. They also said that they stood by everything they sold and run a legitimate business. These statements were an important part of my decision to purchase the vehicle. The next day, as my son was driving the car to Kirksville where he lives, the check engine light came on. We had driven the car less than 50 miles. I left a message for Thad on Sunday. This text back to me at 8:44pm that evening was "I talked to the boss. He said that it needs to come to our shop to be fixed in order to make it right. It is important to us that you are satisfied. Thanks and feel free to call anytime with any concern." Tuesday we had the car computer read. The reading was:Trouble code: P0420DEFINITION: Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold Bank 1Probable causes:1. A/F ratio concern2.Air leak near H02S3.Ignition system concern4.Faulty Catalytic Converter. On Thursday, my son started the trip back to St. Louis to return the car to them. About 30 miles into the trip, the car overheated. We had the car towed from the BP Gas in Macon to a garage. The mechanic indicated the engine had no compression and the spark plug wires were melted. I spoke to both Thad and Josh on Friday. They offered to give me $200 for a catalytic converter if I gave them a receipt. They said that all other damage was my responsibility because we should not have driven the car hot. I explained that we were trying to return the car to them, per their request, and that my son had stopped the car as soon as he realized it was overheating. I towed the car back to St. Louis on Saturday. I now have two mechanics that indicate they sold me a car with a blow head gasket and that the car needs a new engine. I ask Carfax for advice. They didn't have any to offer. I wish I had seen the 6 steps to buying a used car that CarFax offers. I would have benefited from several of the steps. I am working with the Better Business Bureau in the hope of recovering some of my loss.

“Incomplete Information Provided”

★★☆☆☆

written by Rosco798495 on 11/08/2013

My son made a deal on a used car. I obtained the VIN to check it out. I bought a $6.95 background check from instaVIN which showed a salvage yard in the vehicle's history. The information wasn't specific and I was concerned so I decided to buy the high-priced CarFax to see if more detailed information was available. The CarFax showed nothing, nada, not a thing, about the salvage. I was able to obtain a FREE title history from Ohio BMV which showed an insurance company had title prior to the used car dealer. (CarFax failed to reveal this.) Now I am thinking that this car was wrecked, flooded, or worse. A call to the insurance company on the title history (from Ohio BMV) revealed the car had been stolen, recovered, and sold at auction. This was quite a relief considering the possibilities. How come the $45 CarFax didn't reveal the true history of the car? I am tremendously disappointed in CarFax. The information I needed was available at low cost or free. The relatively expensive CarFax provided no useful information about the car and had we relied upon it alone, we wouldn't know about it being a stolen vehicle. Now I don't have any confidence that a wrecked or flooded vehicle's history would be revealed in a CarFax, either.

Bought the car. Next day went to local oil change facility and had all fluids checked since there was not sticker. The next day on the way to work the car overheated. Parked it and checked the fluid at lunch time and it only took a cup full of coolant. The system is only as good as the items entered into it. I have been checking the coolant daily until yesterday we changed the head gasket. All I can remember is that the seller stated that everything worked.I attract all the good ones..!

“Good general info, unhelpful regarding deferred...”

written by bigmyk2k on 24/07/2013

I purchased a Carfax subscription as I was in the position of immediately needing a new car, and not having the clearest head to make these decisions alone. (My wife is divorcing me, car died the day before closing on the sale of my house, etc.) The information was a decent baseline, but obviously is only as good as the information provided. I generated reports for two cars that I was down to in the decision process, and the Carfax indicated that both were both trustworthy purchases. The first, upon driving, revealed some glaring repair needs, and was immediately eliminated. The second, which I purchased, was also regarded as well above average by the Carfax report, and seemed a good value with no glaring deficiencies. Within a few weeks of purchase, after finding some things that did not come up on the test-drive, I took it to a few mechanics to have it checked out (something I know I should have done before purchase, but I wasn't thinking clearly, and was in a hurry) and have had to spend $1400 on it in repairs- roughly 1/3 the purchase price and value of the car. The CarFax report may reveal some very major, but uncommon problems- salvage title (though this would show on the actual title), major accidents maybe, perhaps something I can't think of, but I will certainly not purchase it again in the future.

I pulled a Car Fax from the new car dealers web site. It said everything was OK with the car. After I purchased it, While washing the vehicle I found major paint work along with several mechanical problems. After a professional inspection by an employee of the same dealership, I was informed of the extent of the damage on the car. If I knew this information up front I would have never purchased that car or purchased from that dealership. I purchased the car from the local dealership in Venice Fl. where I live. “Change of service”

written by GrandRapidsMI on 06/06/2013

I much preferred the old method of buying access for a 30 day window. Buying this service for only 5 vehicles is not very helpful. Great information with limited value. Unlimited access by license plate is even less helpful in researching on line.

“Carfax only showed bits and pieces ”

★★☆☆☆

written by Wheelds on 01/06/2013

So I bought a 2001 vehicle with 130k. Carfax was cleaned and Included "full maintenance" records, showed 1 owner etc... I didn't make it 30 miles off the lot the transmission was gone. Carfax had no indication of transmission work being done. Carfax is definitely a good supplemental record for a used car but I would not rely on anything included in the report as fact or use it as a basis for your used car decision.
