Sad Experience!

The way they work; they seem cheap online , if you read further you will know why:

-If you don't want to buy extra insurance you have to pay a deposit of 6850 euros. (Usually you have to call your bank because a reservation on your credit card goes up to 5000 euros per month) They know this. It is highly unusual to ask for these deposits when renting a car.

This reservation on your credit card is not removed until after 30 days.

SAD cars claims that this is due to your bank; NOT TRUE! is due to the failure of SAD cars to cancel the reservation.

Because of this you cannot use your credit card for 30 days.

-We got an old car, another smaller car (4 WD) than I rented with 165000 km (would be maximum 2 years old according to SAD cars...).

-Much damage on the outside of the car, all was not on the contract. I had to take pictures myself

-When I returned the car, I filled up with gas, literally gas to the brim, and returned it early because the plane took off. I received a charge of 52 euros for the petrol.

After frequent telephone contact this would be refunded. Ultimately I never got my money back.

In short, a company that provides poor service in all areas.

I never rent a car from them again, just trouble. Many calls and no solutions.

The Name Says It All, Sad Sad Sad

Horrible company that will find ways to charge you extra and do not fulfill their promises. You will need lots os persuasion to get things done and not pay unexpected charges.

They let me and my friends waiting for more than 15 minutes in the freezing rain for a shuttle that never arrived. The people working behind the counter need to take their own cars to help customers.

Do Not Book If There Is A Chance Of Canceling!!!

We were suppose to go to Iceland in 2020 when Covid-19 hit. We deferred the rental until 2021. In February 2021, we decided to stay in the USS because we didn't know if the borders were going to be open this summer. We canceled it formally in February 2021 and they said the refund is coming but it could take many months. I sent another canceling email in May and again roughly the same message. I emailed yet again in July 2021 and I never received a response. In August and September I began calling. No one seemed to know how to check the status of the refund. I finally talked to one of the owners in September and he said it was pending. Here it is October 8 MONTHS LATER and still no refund on my credit card. when I call no one seems to know when the owners might be there and when they are coming back. I am really frustrated with the runaround I have been getting. I would give it no stars if that was an option. It shouldn't take 8 MONTHS to get a refund!!!!! Should it???

Not Worth The Savings

Terrible company to rent from!! When we picked up the car is was filthy, it looked like they had taken a dry towel and just rubbed the dirt around. Even the guy going over the car commented on how dirty it was and how someone didn't do their job. The windshield wipers were long over due to be replaced and made it almost impossible to see out during the many rain storms in Iceland. A month after returning home I received an email saying I was being charged for a parking ticket that I allegedly received, even though there was never a ticket on the car the entire time I rented. I asked for a copy of this ticket as they just charged me with out any proof of the ticket. When they did finally send the link the ticket had been issued 3 days before I even arrived in Iceland. I emailed to inform them of their mistake and have yet to hear back. This company is completely unorganized and has extremely low standard of how to conduct business. Would have been much better off spending the extra $100 to rent form a more reputable company.

3 Cars In 5 Days

I'll start the review positively: The people working at SADCars are extremely nice and helpful. They also provide you with a discount at certain gas stations. These are the reason I am giving SADCars two stars.

The reason they aren't getting even three is because the vehicles are "janky AF". We rented a Toyota SUV on Sunday morning, returned it that day because as we were driving to Reykjavik because the breaks weren't quite as responsive as I'd like them to be aka: they didn't really work. We brought the car back the same day and they gave us a newer model of the same vehicle. It seemed fine until the AUTOMATIC car started stalling. Yes. The automatic car was stalling. To SADCars credit, they met us at a random gas station and switched out the car we were driving with a newer, bigger vehicle. This vehicle stopped well, ran well, however, the power steering sounded like its on its way out and the shocks were also incredibly loud. We would get looks at gas stations as we were pulling in and out. Looks of horror.

We understand that the cars are older which is why they are cheaper and we were fine with that. We're not fine with feeling like the vehicle we're driving is putting us in danger or is about to break down at any minute. We decided SAD must stand for "shoddy and dangerous".

If you rent from SADCars, I would highly recommend taking the car for a spin before you get to far. Test out the breaks, make sure the steering works well. The cars are older and have a lot of miles on them so I'm not surprised they make some noises, however, they shouldn't be unsafe.

Stranded By Sad Cars

We needed a rental just for a day, as we were leaving the next day, and reached out to Sad Cars. We spoke with Sid, at the Bus Hostel location near Reykjavik. Sid said he had a car and quoted a a very low price over the phone. My husband agreed and took a taxi over.

When my husband arrives, Sid shows him the car, one that wasn't clean and smelled of smoke, but Sid said that's all they had. For the price and the fact that my husband was already there, he begins paper work. Sid then quotes double the price that he gave over the phone. Of course my husband questions why he received a different price in person vs over the phone along with the state of the car. Sid was not at all helpful. In fact, in the middle of the discussion Sid just got up and left - said it was his break time. My husband was incredulous, there was no other Sad Car representative to help, he had no car, and had a pregnant wife (me) waiting for him back at the guest house.

My husband called around and ended up going with Hertz. While we paid a slightly higher price, we got great customer service, a new and safe car, and no hassle.

Seriously folks, you may pay a lower price but the car quality and lack of service just isn't worth it. Iceland's weather is unpredictable, make a safe choice.

No Refunds Allowed

They do not provide refunds on any pre paid rentals regardless of your reason or time. They don't state this clearly in the rental process online, it's onky found in the FAQs page. Even when I rented a car the day prior in the middke if winter when they had no business, they refused a refund. Use Budget or Hertz, as these companies offer proper cancellation.

Dangerous Car

We were given an old 4x4 for our trip around Iceland. We should have given it back straight away. Within an hour, the automatic gears were slipping and juddering. We noticed oil coming from the engine and found that the mechanic had not replaced the oil cap. We then looked underneath and the spare tire was bald, had a slash in it, and was soft. All along the trip there were warning lights flashing. When I called Sadcars they said that it was just the sensors. A really scary experience.

Very Old Cars With High Mileage With Lots Of Issues, Notsafe

I was in Reykjavik for 7 days a months ago and we decided to rent a SUV for a few days to explore the glaciers and falls. We booked a car with SADcars because it was the best offer moneywise. The car was very disapoointing though. Instead of the Honda on the picture we got a Suzuki that was about 10 years old, had run more than 200.000 km and the car did not open properly. The shift did not work propely, it was very tough to put in the reverse gear. I could not believe that a modern country like Iceland has such low standards, especially given the fact that I still paid a lot of money for the car (about 90 € a day). Overall very disappointing experience, next time Ill invest a bit more to be sure I get a newer and - most importantly - SAFE car.
