lxReynolds129's review of Lidl

“Poor distribution network”

★★☆☆☆

written by lxReynolds129 on 15/04/2017

I've been quite loyal to Lidl over the past couple of years, but I think the time has come for a change.

Some of the products are really good, for example the houmous, which in my opinion is much better quality than that sold at the major supermarkets.

However, what lets Lidl down time and time again is the availability of regular stock items due to non-delivery. I know that Lidl don't stock the same range as the larger supermarkets, but I'm talking about items that they do stock. A couple of weeks ago it was eggs - the shelves were bare. Last week it was yogurt and cottage cheese, and today it was leeks. When you ask the staff, they say "sorry, we ordered it, but it wasn't delivered". So of course I then have to drive to Morrisons or Tesco, and lose in time and petrol what I would have saved at Lidl. A few weeks ago it was tins of kidney beans - these must have a shelf life of 2 years, but the probelm doesn't seem to be lack of stock, it's the failure of the distribution centre to load the trucks properly.

Another thing I've noticed that appears to be connected to this is the freshness of perishables. Recently, they had satsumas on the shelves that were covered in white mould, and mixed peppers that were soft and rotting. Today, the brussels sprouts were yellow and the broccoli was going the same way. You see the TV adverts about fresh produce, but what I think happens is that the produce sits in a Lidl warehouse somewhere for a week or more after being delivered fresh from the producer.

I sent some comments to Lidl a year or more ago with some feedback, and all I got was a copied and pasted 'standard reply' not addressing the issues I'd raised, so I'm not going to bother this time - I'm just going to vote with my feet (and wallet).
