pfarrant's review of Nottingham Trinity Square Accomodation

“Very happy. Good location, great staff, enjoying it!”

First - note the dates on negative reviews. They're about four years old and largely now factually incorrect. The management are also working hard to find out and meet student wants and needs, which is a massive thumbs-up in my books. As a result I've been quite detailed in my review because I think there's a few things here which are a bit unfair to the place. Some of it is even nonsense - like why should it matter if you get a wet-room for disabled students instead of a shower pod? It's more space for the same money - result!

I'm a 4th year at UoN, spent first two years in another private provider near to University Park which was similarly priced, and I was desperately unhappy. It felt isolated, and getting anything done by the staff was slow (despite the eagerness of maintenance to do stuff, the red tape and management was a nightmare). Third years was in the USA which was an eye opener to compare to British accommodation - America was basic, grotty, and expensive. Places like Trinity Square, despite its faults, is by comparison space age!

Lifts: So far they've been perfect. Only twice has the second one from the reception floor to my flat been unavailable, and that was because it was being cleaned. The main lifts from street to reception (6 floors) has been 100% so far.

Windows: of course they only open a bit - it's building regulations! You're 6-10 floors up, and so they can only go so far so you don't make a pile of icky body parts down below when you're drunk. They open enough for air to flow a bit, and you can always buy a fan if you want it to circulate a bit more. Trust me, it's the same anywhere you go - and in fact my first two years I was a place on the ground floor and it was the same, but being lower had WAY less air flow. You're up high here, much breezier. Lovely!

Facilities: There's a laundry on site which is about the same price as most student accommodation laundries, and run by a third party company. You buy a card for the machines which you top up online. Simple.

Security: They have been courteous and professional, helpful with parcel deliveries, and dealing with stuff like making sure grit is put out at night during snowy spells and cold snaps (they don't just wait for someone else to do it in the morning).

Reception: The women and men manning the front desk during office hours are helpful with all issues to the limit of their capabilities and what they are allowed to. If you need a letter or a form filling out for student finance or the bank, they'll do it. Always smiling and chatty too. If you aren't an ar*e who blanks them like 19th century maids and servants, then you'll find them greeting you by name when you pass through.

Maintenance and cleaning: This is thorough and regular, with water inspections monthly to make sure everything is in accordance to building/landlord regulations. If you're busy or just out of the shower they'll come back when is convenient to you so you're not being busted in on. You get letters warning you days or even weeks in advance of inspections, and your privacy is always respected. If you have something go wrong like your microwave dies or a bulb needs changing, then it'll be sorted within 24 hours usually (officially they tell you it can take more time because sometimes they've got bigger jobs to do, but so far they've always had me sorted within a few hours). If you spot something in communal areas needs fixing then tell them and it gets done.

Management: Always helpful, and are trying to make the place even better. They invite you to complete questionnaires with prizes on offer if you do, to get your ideas and complaints in. I understand they're looking at all sorts like maybe a common room to hang out in and play pool etc, and other nice student-leaning concepts that would make it even better still. I also believe that given the pressure on student finances from fees, inflation, living costs going up, they're even thinking about holding or cutting the rent a bit in future. So they DO listen.

Student life: Student reps now have a presence here, so for those who want a party scene it's there for you if you want it and are prepared to look for it. On moving in day there's even student helpers from Trent who are round and about to help you and your family or professional help lump all your stuff in from the kerb or the council car park beneath, all the way to your room (if you want them to, and ask).

Internet: Provided by Ask4, it is quick, reliable, cheap, and upgradeable if your demands are higher. You can have a wireless router or rather a wireless access point (you can bring a router from home and follow Ask4's instructions to make it work, or buy one direct from them). If you have more than a couple of devices to connect, you just pay a few pounds and get to have more devices. I'm running the main PC both wired and wifi, laptop, smart phone, and ipad from the wifi without any problems.

Furnishings: Flats are fully furnished and comfortable, including a huge HD freeview television (license required if you have one to yourself, like in the studios).

Accessibility: There's students here in wheelchairs and on crutches and walking sticks, and they seem to get about just fine. There's lifts up of course, and ramps to go from reception level to the courtyard, doors are all wide enough, and there's accessible rooms too for no extra cost. Can't say fairer than that.

My room is nice and quiet, even when next door have parties. Once their door and my door are closed, I hear nothing.

There's a facebook group set up and administered by the management staff so you can meet people easily and arrange parties, and the management don't interfere. So club nights and parties are easy to find or arrange.

The accommodation isn't the cheapest out there, particularly if you're comparing it to private lets where bills are on top, BUT here you have a prime location with new fixtures and fittings, a keycard entry system so city centre nutters and scrotes aren't just wandering in and picking locks to nick all your stuff. You have 24 hour security on hand, good maintenance staff dealing with everything you need, and you're slap bang in the middle of the city centre so there's always stuff to do and things to keep you busy. There's a cineworld round the corner, restaurants, bars, shops, markets, bus stops 20 seconds from the front door, everything a student needs. And if you're moaning that you aren't meeting people and it's too quiet then look to yourself and make it happen. Student life isn't supposed to fall into your lap, you have to get involved. The facebook page alone makes that MUCH easier.

Now, the few negative points - and you'll note only one of them is the fault of Trinity Square, and none of them are deal-breakers!

1) Royal Mail deliver letters, but anything bigger and they just put a pick-up card through so you have to walk to the delivery centre half a mile down the main road.

2) Moving in day, there's double yellows on North Church Street, and so if your stuff is being brought in a van taller than the 6' 9" limit for the car park, they'll have to ditch you and your stuff at the kerb and leave you and the student helpers to get your stuff in. Traffic Wardens will give you ten minutes before getting ar*ey so there's no super panic, but it's worth bearing in mind when you're doing your planning.

3) The fridges in studio apartments (solo occupancy) are pokey, so if you want to stock up a bit or get a big bag of oven chips you're a bit screwed. This isn't a total nightmare though as there's a little waitrose and tesco express within 100m, and a tesco metro within 200m so you can buy fresh as often as you please.

4) The west-facing aspect, North Church Street, now has a glass-fronted office block facing it. So just remember to keep your curtains closed when your clothes are off, because one or two of the EON energy staff do have a habit of staring over now and then. Unless you like the attention, I guess!

5) If you plan to bring a car, the annual parking pass from the council is quite a big one-off hit to pay (though you can split this over the year too). About £700 in total. However it's secure, covered by CCTV, manned 24 hours, and you don't have to pay the Nottingham "student tax" parking permit fee of around £200 a year on top so it's all inclusive. And if you worked out how many thousands of pounds it would cost to buy a parking ticket every day in the same car park, it actually works out pretty cheap.

In summary: Comparing this place to the others I've lived in and visited friends in for the past few years (both major buildings and small houses), it's easily the best I've seen and I'm rather sad I can't live here again when I've graduated.
