He has a past he never talks about, secrets he never can tell and an inability to let anyone get too close to him. Sara slipped under his guard, making him feel protective and concerned for her welfare in a world where shapeshifters are not supposed to exist. When she returns after leaving him for two months, Chase Dagger is unable to explain how much he missed her and how worried about her he was.

Before either of them can talk their feelings out, a mutual friend of theirs, Detective "Padre" Martinez is framed for a crime he did not commit. Padre was trying to prove that ex-con Mitch Arnosky was behind a series of crimes that left two people dead and another in critical condition. Mitch somehow turned it around to look as if Padre was planting false evidence and Chase and Sara are determined to clear their friend's name no matter what lengths they have to go to in order to succeed.

Chase is a figure shrouded in mystery but readers will appreciate his loyalty to his friends and adore his confusion over his growing feelings for Sara. Although Sara is a shapeshifter, she is more human than most people are in her reverence towards life and the earth. Lee Driver has written an exciting paranormal mystery that has excellent plotting, brilliant characterizations and an enthralling storyline.
