I am pleased to say that the hype of this game was well deserved because it is a true masterpiece! From the instant you start playing you will notice the textures on everything look superb! And everything from the gun battles to the simply wanderings of the map look brilliant! The music is great to really build up the suspense, the mini sequences that appear from time to time will make you jump! The control system is brilliant! Oh and you will greatly enjoy playing Gears Of War online as have i.

Definitly one the best FPS games i've ever played.

★★★★★

written by Rikimaru on 16/10/2008

Well my first thought was that this was going to be a huge lemon. And no I don't mean that I was expecting to find a squished up lemon inside the case! Usually hype and video games go hand in hand with divided opinions... On the one side people end up loving the game due to the hype and then get suckered in. And on the other side people get worked up with the hype and get massively disappointed. Well I am pleased to say that the hype with this game was well deserved because it is a true masterpiece!
The first piece of good news when I saw this game was that I saw it was made by Epic and published by Microsoft Game Studios... and before you "say no to corporation" neigh sayers out there start groaning bare this in mind... The xBox 360 is made by Microsoft right? Therefore who do you think would be able to get the most out of the console when making games? ... Got it? That's right it's Microsoft Game Studios! And I have the feeling that they definitely lent a hand in pushing the console to the limits with this beauty!
From the instant you start playing you will notice the textures on everything look superb! And everything from the gun battles to the simply wanderings of the map look brilliant! The music is great to really build up the suspense, the mini sequences that appear from time to time will make you jump!
The control system is brilliant! Picture ghost recon advanced warfighter... remember how complicated and involved the interface is? Well... good news is that this is nothing like that! Practically all of the duck and cover controls are used with one button! It's not complicated at all and I firmly believe that anyone can get the hang off it! One thing that they have done on this game is that they try and make everything satisfying, even reloading is fun, you have a little bar and if you stop the marker right (think golf games when you take a swing) you will get a perfect reload and get a power bonus! If you screw up your character will get annoyed and often swear! Good times! Id personally say the most satisfying part is when you pull off a chainsaw attack!
The story is cool enough to compel the player to continue, albeit a little thin!
Another really cool thing is that the main character Marcus Fenix is voiced by the same guy that does Benders voice in futurama!
Now I shall move on to the not so great aspects of the game! No game is completely perfect, this game is very grey scaled and lacking in colours, I assume it must have something to do with all the high textures but I'm no expert in these matters! The maps can also look similar but I am guessing this may have something to do with the fact that it's not very colourful. It's not very good for multiplayer either, to fully utilise this you would need two consoles because if you play a 2 player death match on one console, it's literally one on one, you cannot add any extra cannon fodder.
I am racking my brains to think of anything else but I cannot, this game is a MUST HAVE for the 360 owner, if you do not have it WHY NOT. If you do have it then good on you!

I never had so much fun on a game in my life it is worth buying again the best version is the special edition box set which i said on some of my other reviews cause you get the in this some art work in a book and a collectors disc showing the making of this game and its great to watch how the human mind can come up with a masterpiece like this. Plus Rumor has there is a movie following this which I can not wait for so the game is worth having.

One of the best games ever made. The graphics are top notch and I'm yet to find a glitch anywhere on the game. Gears of War may be gory but the language is probably worse but still its a quality game. It's an extreme test of your skill on hardcore and insane, and casual is great for first timers and still offers challenges so it isn't a game you complete once then just walk it next time. THE BEST GAME THE GAMING INDUSTRY WILL PROBABLY EVER SEE!

★★★★★

written by Galbytorix on 08/09/2007

Gears of War is a brilliant action packed adventure in which you annihilate grubs, wretches and behemoths with explosives, machine guns, chainsaws and satellite laser beams. The graphics of the aliens are astonishing and the blood and guts spill out in a spectacular mess. The camera modes are really good and when the chainsaw is used, the ultimate camera mode is initiated. GoW is the best 360 game yet and will be the main rival with the highly acclaimed Halo 3. GoW has the amazing abilities of blind firing and taking cover while still having visual on the target. GoW's storyline may be short and the levels sometimes rather pointless but the overall build up to the end level is great and the cinematics are usually very, very gory. The voices and interactions of the characters are very realistic if not too optimistic during a war. The weapons used contains machine guns, shotguns, exploding arrows and the laser weapon known as "The Hammer Of Dawn" that targets satellite beams that annihilate all - Including yourself! Overall Gears of War is a MUST BUY and a game that will cause ultimate joy and bloodthirst if not forever.

I'm writing this review because Gears of War has totally blown my mind with its gameplay, graphics and everything else packed into it. From the start you're thrown into a world filled with strange locust aliens that have only one aim - to blow you to bits, and that's it really, other than surviving as long as you can. The action is fantastic and I find myself addicted to one of the best games ever made. Sony eat your heart out.

I think enough has been said here about the graphics and overall look, sound and feel of this amazing game.

I really wanted to expand on the comment made about the Co-op (offline) Mode.

Whatever you do, however you do it, whoever you have to drag in, play this game in split screen co-op mode.

Somehow the graphics are as good in split screen (never come across that before), but the game takes on a totally new and much more realistic and for the want of a better word... deeper, meaning and enjoyment when working together. You can even walk away from each other and not be in the same room, or building as each other. Work as a squad, heal each other in a firefight, save each other, one up in a building one in a courtyard below, one with the assault rifle close up, one with the sniper rifle from a distance... ENDLESS FUN! and as for dealing with Berserkers... AMAZING!

Buy this, get your mates in... and wave goodbye to your social life!

Yeah I thought that. I thought that the graphics would be really bad on co-op mode compared too single player also same with online multiplayer the graphics are so good.

“When I first heard about this game I didn't pay much...”

★★★★★

written by Takahiro on 03/01/2007

When I first heard about this game I didn't pay much attention to it. It simply seemed to me like another tactical shooter that is stereotyping the XBox brand. But when it was actually released and I saw some trailers for it, the survival horror aspects got me interested, and by chance I saw it in a sale a mere week after it was released and snapped it up, and I have to say it's been the biggest surprise of the year as far as Xbox 360 games have gone.

Essentially, it's based in a future on another planet, where humans had lived in rule of the planet until 'Emergence Day', when the Locust creatures came from underground and attacked. Mankind suffered massive loses and eventually started to decimate their own cities just to deny the Locust control for a while longer. On their last legs the special forces of the army, the 'Gears' break out a fallen soldier from Jail, Marcus Fenix, to re-join their cause. You play as Fenix in the game. He was imprisoned for abandoning duties earlier in the war, but now they need all the help they can get, and you can play a small tutorial style section whilst escaping the prison if you wish. (You can choose to skip past it, which is a brilliant feature, and you occasionally get other choices of route to take later).

On starting, the graphics are utterly astonishing; even on my tiny 14 inch standard definition TV in my bedroom, and seeing it on our HDTV is utterly incredible. Sony may be crowing about the power of the PS3, and for some time I thought they had the upper hand, but after seeing this I'm not so sure any more. It's never swamped with dozens of on-screen characters, but all the characters look brilliant, and literally lose bits as you shoot them. Head-shots are especially gory, and sticking the chainsaw bayonet into an enemy results in a truly disturbing shower of blood, so this is not a game for the weak-hearted.

The colours are a little drab, but it suits the game, and the main highlight of the visuals are the simply stunning locations you find yourself in. The draw distance is brilliant. You can see for miles, and all the buildings are very well designed and impressive, and the sheer sense of scale in the underground is incredible. Also, if you've seen the film Pitch Black you'll likely remember the flying creatures that came out at night; Gears of War has some very similar creatures that attack in the dark, and seeing hundreds of them fill the sky is a frightening sight, and throughout the dark stages you have to constantly duck between light areas to stay alive. It's one of the most unnerving parts of the game and I love it.

The audio is also just as good as the visuals. Your squad-mates are constantly chatting with each other, and when they're elsewhere you'll still hear them on the radio. The gun-fights sound brilliant, especially when put through a surround sound speaker setup.

But the gameplay is a little unusual, and it takes some getting used to it at first, but for the most part it is very good. The game has a heavy focus on using any cover you can, and when you see the hail of bullets the locusts will be firing at you, you'll be glad the cover system works so well. You press 'A' whilst holding the direction of the object or wall you want to cover behind, and Marcus will crouch or back-up to it depending on how high it is, and from there you can simply blind-fire your weapon. It causes the enemy to seek cover and gives you a chance to move forward. You can also lean out and aim properly, but this leaves you exposed. You can also (by pressing a direction and 'A' again) leap over your cover if it is small enough, SWAT turn across a gap into different cover or suddenly run out forwards from cover. However, most of the locust can also use these techniques, so you have to be on your toes. If any come leaping over towards you, you can get busy with some close combat. As I've previously mentioned, your main rifle has a chainsaw bayonet, and it all gets incredibly messy. Other weapons are simply used to batter them, but if you equip grenades you can actually 'tag' them, just be sure to run away! Occasionally though, close combat can feel a little awkward, and I've been killed a number of times whilst I was fumbling with the controls. You need to be quick with the chainsaw, because if you're shot, you need to start revving it again, which takes a little time.
However, that problem is minor. The only other one I can think of is the 'Roadie Run'; if you hold 'A', Marcus will do a couching sprint, but you can barely turn whilst doing it, and you get too close to cover you will occasionally just suddenly stop and go into cover. But the Roadie Run isn't often very useful and I don't use it much, so it's again, only a minor problem.

The last thing about gameplay is reloading. Like in most games, you can simply press reload and wait, but when you start reloading there is a small bar that appears and a small line moves across it. If you can stop the line in the highlighted part of the bar you'll reload faster and gain a temporary damage boost. However, fail and your gun will jam and take even longer. It's a little tough, but after a while it becomes second nature, and so for once you actually have to do something while reloading; it's a great little feature.

The actual weaponry you get to play with is pretty good. The Locust mainly use a burst-fire rifle, that if nothing else proves useful when you need ammo. You can find ammo for it everywhere, and it's a useful back-up weapon. The main Gears weapon is a full-auto rifle with the chainsaw, and it is my main weapon of choice, as it's accurate and fairly powerful. You can find a number of handguns throughout, as well as a shotgun and a sniper-rifle. The shotgun is great for the smaller locust, and you can kill many of them in one-shot with the sniper rifle. Then you can also take a rocket-launcher from some of the bigger locust, and later in the game a Torque-Bow that fires explosive arrows - huge fun that one. But the biggest weapon you'll get isn't one you can use often, but it's a lethal weapon that you need to take out the biggest of the bunch -- the Hammer of Dawn. Essentially, you use it to mark where you want your satellite fire, and when it does, it literally vaporises most of the locust, and soon takes out the biggest. However, you must be outdoors to use it, have a clear sky and an aligned satellite, you will get radio calls to say when the Hammer is online and when it goes offline, but when you get to use it you'll have some great fun.

The actual game is quite lengthy. You may finish it soon enough on the easiest setting, but stick it onto the insane difficulty and it will last an awful lot longer. Then you also have a brilliant co-op mode, both on and offline, where you can play through the entire story together. It's one of the best co-op modes I've ever played, and when playing with a friend, you can give each other real covering fire and come up with your own tactics. Brilliant stuff. The only downer is the offline death matches. You can only play using 2 players, and you can't use any AI Bots, so multiplayer is a little lonely and quickly boring. However, it is 8 player over Live, and it is really good fun.

So overall, it's not perfect. There are a few parts that drag on and some awkwardness in the controls, and it doesn't really try to do anything new, but what it does do, it does incredibly well. The survival horror theme with the locusts is brilliant, and keeps it feeling fresh. The graphics are truly next-gen, and it's certainly the first real killer-app for the Xbox 360. Even if you just rent it, Gears of War is a brilliant title you must play, and it has set the benchmark for the next generation.

“Had Microsoft not publicly beaten their chest to a...”

★★★★★

written by Harmonica on 29/11/2006

Had Microsoft not publicly beaten their chest to a pulp over this game it would have been a marvellous discovery for us gamers. Indeed the television ad alone with its glorious graphics and that atmospheric rendition of 'Mad World' would have caught the attention and imagination of Xbox owners around the world, and left them chomping at the bit to purchase this game.

However, Microsoft didn't allow us to develop our own idea of what this game would be like, choosing instead to brainwash us with the ridiculous notion that Gears of War will be the best game of modern times, if not of all time. This is where Gears falls down (briefly), and could have stayed floored, killed by its own creator's hype. Let me explain.

At every given opportunity over the last year, Epic games and or Microsoft have given clear indications that Gears of War would be the ultimate on ALL fronts of next generation gaming experiences. Well, this is simply not the case. Graphically the game is awesome; however, delve further into the promised 'highly interactive world' and you find that the interactive ability is somewhat limited to the odd movable car or kickable door. Furthermore, at times the games backdrops look like a beautifully rendered painting, complete with a distant 'impassive stillness' that many paintings impart.

Next there's the game play... Outrageously the game engineers chose to use a simplified charter control system; in this case button A. (Apparently gamers don't want to learn complicated control systems any more). That's all very well until you find yourself holding button A (A button to run) in an attempt to flee advancing foes, but instead attach yourself to the nearest wall while remaining fully exposed. Ditto if you do manage to break into a run and stray too close to any object; BANG you're glued to it like a fly (A button also takes cover).

MS/Epic have also made Grenade usage overcomplicated in an attempt to try and simplify things for this unspecified new bread of player. The game gives the player an arcing beam to illustrate exactly where the nag will land, but you need FOUR buttons to do this:

(1) Dpad up to select nag
(2) LT to swing nag and engage said beam
(3) Right analog stick to aim (whilst holding LT)
(4) RT to throw nag

As a result, you tend to only use explosive nags in close quarters when you can throw them adhoc, or to attach them directly to your opponents body; because with the time it takes to do all the above in the middle of a fire fight, you'll find yourself being shot to shreds.

Many of these faults are minor, and some are most likely a result of choosing a 3rd person perspective game engine, as opposed to the usual 1st person shooter. But these faults took their toll on my initial first encounter with the game. Almost immediately into the game the experience only felt 'ordinary' as opposed to the blow your mind stuff that Microsoft promised.

Now three weeks into game ownership, Gears of War still feels 'ordinary', but it's a great ordinary. The game is without a doubt the smoothest I've played online/offline. The graphics (especially charter features) are second to none that I know of, and the maps are wholly acceptable. There are a few moments of intense gore, like your first close up of a Berserker (the female locust and freaking ugly), and of course exploding bodies. However, the campaign mode ends fairly quickly, with a clear-cut indication of a second game.

To summarise, for what it is, Gears of War is a superb game, and arguably the best currently available for the 360. I am impressed and fairly happy with what I got for £50 (collectors edition)!

In addition, 95% of the thing this game does, it does extremely well. But for me, it just doesn't live up to the hype its makers spread across the Globe during the whole of 2006. So, although new game technology enables the game to run incredibly smoothly no matter what is happening on screen, to me it's still a fairly standard gaming experience, that would have been far far better, if only Microsoft and Epic had left the shoddy propaganda at home.

Having read your review, I can see your frustration with Gears of War online. I have not had the experience of online gaming. And to be honest, with what you say, I hope in future and for future titles these blips can be erased. That way good games will maybe become great games, and certainly Halo 3 promises to be the best title coming our way (on and offline) - well, let's hope anyway.

Harmonica's Response to Harmonica's Review

Written on: 08/02/2007

Thanks for your comment. After owning Gears of War from the day of release, to date, I cannot fully agree.

Graphically, the game is an experience in itself. The game engine as mentioned before is outstanding; remarkable even, but the playing experience is not as awe-inspiring, and certainly not representative on the hype that preceded the game release.

I’ve played practically nothing else since purchase, because as you rightly point out, this is the best game on the 360 bar none. However, my original review was a in-depth, and a true reflection of gaming, both with Gears of War and multiple preceding 1st person and 3rd person perspective shooters on multiple platforms. As such, if you have less experience of games from SEGA master systems right through to 3DO & PC, I can fully understand your stance with Gears of War. It is a great game!

Yet to this day, the control system continues to annoy and frustrate me, while the online multiplayer experience has gone from great, to good, to at best average in this time, as Epic’s ‘compulsory’ downloads/upgrades have ruined the menu system, introduced multiple connection problems (the online game crashes on average 1 in 3 games without fail), reduced the points awarded ratio, AND perhaps most annoyingly, reset the power and range of the shotgun.

Since the online game has turned from strategy and skill, to a continuous blasting frenzy, as no other weapon can compete with the shotgun from medium to close range, gun butts have been rendered useless, as has machine and hand gun trades against another player using his shotgun.

Please do not suppose I’m just a ‘poor player’. My current rank on Gears of war is 11,000 out of 600,000 + players worldwide, who have entered Ranked Warzone at some point.

However, as recently as last night, I found myself simply switching the game off out of frustration due to these Epic changes that make for a poorer quality online experience, than the one they delivered back in November 2006.

Admittedly, this is the first in the line up of Gears of War titles, just like Halo 1 through to 2, so the next Gears of War should be the near perfect article, and I must reiterate that this game is without a doubt among the best available anywhere on any format at this moment in time. But for me it falls short in the areas mentioned.

Gears of War is a brilliant, unique third - person shooter game. I do say unique but there are other games about mankind's survival when it's up to you to save the world but this is just the best, its like a nightmare that you cant escape but of course because it's an addictive game you don't want to leave because it's just so superb. Also unlike other shooters, Gears of War is all about teamwork in a big way, for example you can play with two humans. I also used voice recognition which was really cool - it sometimes didn't work and needed a bit of tweaking but the game is amazing without it too. Quite expensive but definitely worth the money, GO get IT!
