“I purchased this LCD tv and have nothing but praise...”

written by NoelM1 on 04/12/2008

I purchased this LCD tv and have nothing but praise for it. i have always liked Sony as a brand. This tv comes HD ready with built in freeview the picture quality is very good. This tv also has Analog and the design is pleasing to the eye. It could have come with more HDMI connections as it only has one' this is the only downside if you are after an LCD i would recommend this tv.

“My Sony KDLS32A12U LCD TV was easy to install straight...”

My Sony KDLS32A12U LCD TV was easy to install straight from the box. The instructions were straightforward, and it auto tuned and worked straight away.

It produces a bright picture, with the only downside being that large dark areas on the screen shimmer around the edges with another colour when the picture is in transition. Black is particularly bad for this, with green spots round the edges as the picture is changing.

“Not Impressed with this Sony KDLS32A12U TV. ”

Not Impressed with this Sony KDLS32A12U TV.

I found the specified viewing angle was not true for near-black colours, especially around the cut-off point, where a bizarre effect was apparent. Starting from even a slight angle, these near black appear brighter than they should so, producing a very distracting effect.

You probably wouldn't notice this on most films/shows, but unfortunately the first film we watched was all in shadows, and it looked like the rocks were pulsating.

You are then left with a choice to either fiddle with the brightness/contrast to raise the lower black level, or return the TV and get a better one.

“I have had the Sony KDLS32A12U LCD TV for nearly two...”

I have had the Sony KDLS32A12U LCD TV for nearly two months now, and it's great! It is really easy to set up out of the box, and it has excellent picture quality. It did pick up a bit of interference from the Freeview cam/card, but that went away?! I got a DVD Recorder (Sony GXR210) and connected to Scart1 (AV1), and home cinema (Pioneer DV313), so I get great sound and all round quality - and over £300 cheaper than Comet! Check out wall brackets from here too - http://www.home-cinema-accessories.co.uk/item--LCD-Heavy-duty-double-swing-arm-max-30Kg-32--HCA721.html

Martin Waite's Response to pompey's Review

Hi Pompey

Unfortunately we don't have the same respect for this TV as you.
We have had a Sony CRT 32 inch Digital widescreen set for 6 years. the time had come to upgrade to HDTV, we already have a home cinema room with a Panasonic projector to watch movies so this TV was going to be the flagship of our main room. I did my best before hand to look through all of the reviews in different sections of the Home Cinema press and came to the conclusion we would stick with a Sony, we narrowed our choice down to this LCD HDTV.
We installed it in minutes, as you say the set-up is straight forward, the set has a great feel to it and all the buttons are marked up in a logical way, and easy to find in the dark.
Now came the time to sit back and watch a bit of Digital TV. we have SKY Digital fed to the TV via an IXOS £75 RGB Scart lead. and obviously RGB selected on the TV. We have a similier set-up on the Pioneer DVD player and the poor relation, a 10 year old S-VHS JVC Video player that's showing its age.
Well all I can report is this. after owning the set for 4 months I am very unhappy with the picture quality. the Blocking is apparent on all formats, from S-VHS, Digital TV to DVD. the blocking is highly visible on all darkened area's whether Fast moving shots or frozen shots. At first your not to aware of this problem as you tend to focus on the actor rather than the surrounding area's of the screen, but lets not forget the reason why we bought this TV, its to benefit from the High definition environments that HDTV has to offer. I must concede to not having been able to view the TV in HDTV mode. I have tried to connect the PC into the TV and view a HD programme from the PC inputting into the HDMI connection, but gave up when it meant I would have to move the PC from the computer room downstairs.
So my opinion of this TV is very poor, as a side issue, a friend of mine has gone LCD HD TV and had a similar experience, he has opted for back projection as the picture looks better in his opinion.
The sound, well if your into paying extra money for poor stereo sound, well all I can say is you have never heard an average surround set-up before, IMHO, Dolby virtual surround is rubbish and not worth spending the money on, its ability to immerse you in a field off sound is at best random and poor. i would never buy this set or any other, thinking Dolby virtual surround was the answer to any surround option, you should invest in a half decent dedicated 5.1 set-up.
So to round up my thoughts
would I buy this TV for its picture quality. Never
would I buy this TV for its Dolby surround. Never
would I buy this TV because it sits on the wall nicely, well I suppose I already have.
If I had a chance to go back in time I would wait until the more expensive and probably better quality sets come down in price before buying HDTV in the LCD mode.
And buy the way I recon this set is only worth at best £550.
Now how do I explain to the wife why I spent almost a thousand pound more, DOH!!!!

Pompey I do apologize, looking back over the rant is does look is if I am pointing the gun to your head.
I don’t mean to lecture either. One day when I have my degree in English I will put this right. I guess what your saying is I probably should send it back to Sony and have it checked.
I guess the reason I haven't already done this, is because so many other people I have spoken to and sales men too have said stay away from LCD for a while longer and the problem I am experiencing is common.
Would you mind keeping a close eye on dark scenes and report if you see a poor blocking effect? Something like a Large AVI file that’s been converted to MPEG and suffers because of the compression.
Kind regards
Martin

Martin, Sorry that you do not like your LCD TV. I'm concerned that you seem think it is my fault! We have no problems with ours - some pixellation admittedly, but only if you get too close - and I've seen worse on more expensive televisions, in fact I have not seen one that does not pixelate. I do not use the inbuilt speakers as I have a home cinema system, but thanks for the lecture on virtual Dolby. Picture on DVD Playback thru RGB is excellent quality as is the composite picture from a PS2, I have not tried HDTV. I do not have a home projection system to compare it to, but it is cerainly better than our old Fergusson/Thomson 28 inch with an old ON-Digital box. I have not yet managed to find similar or superior quality or features for the price i paid (£1087)
