“At the launch of the 360 Project Gotham Racing 3 was...”

★★★★☆

written by TheGreatSandaledOne on 21/09/2007

At the launch of the 360 Project Gotham Racing 3 was going to be one of those must have titles especially for those who enjoyed the original PG and PG2. It remains the addictive medal (difficulty) and kudos (performance awarded points for power slides, air and the like) achieving game that it was but it lacked that feel of something truly new. perhaps expectations were too high.

The game plays very well. The gradual increase in player ability makes for the chance of increasing difficulty on each of the events.

The format of the game returns to the previous format of competing in a trophy. 23 in all, unlocking the next trophy by completing the previous, or achieving a minimum requirement. Each trophy has a number of challenges ranging from 3 to 7 (if memory serves). Each challenge can be taken under 1 of 6 difficulties Ranging from metal (easy) to platinum (expert/hard(extreme)) The challenges are predictably, time trial, street race, cone challenge (slalom style event), 1 v 1 (race versus a single driver), and speed gate (cross the line travelling the requisite speed). nothing really new here.

The main focus is to get all the medals to win a trophy (awarded based on the lowest skill level challenge achieved -i.e. 6 challenges at platinum and 1 at bronze earns a bronze trophy) Building kudos points through the challenges builds on your total kudos score which is linked to a rank system. This is another achievement to go for, getting rank 1.

Then there is the cash reward. the harder the challenge medal the more cash you get for winning and ultimately the more cash for the completed trophy, the more cash you get the better car you can afford.

The cars. Well there are a lot. They range from the unobtainable super cars like the Enzo and F50 Ferraris, Lamborghinis, and such, to the more standard boy racer Toyota Supra and Nissan Skyline. The cars are all factory standard, i.e the game has no customisable features, other than colour, and this is limited for some of the cars.

The let down of the game, though very playable, is that compared to other racers on the market (namely Forza) the crash engine employed in the game is pretty disappointing. Clipping a barrier at high speed should be catastrophic but merely slows the car and alters your line, in certain places it can be an advantage to clip a barrier, this is NOT a rally game! More over the AI is predictable, it will follow racing line regardless of your threat.

It's a good game, it's addictive if you like racers but if you really like racers the few niggles with the competitive nature of your opponents and circuits will wear down our resolve to continue playing.

There's not really much to say about it... it's not really anything new, it's just Project Gotham Racing 2 with better graphics. oh, and you can get some points for your gamer score on it. you can't forget about that. It's pretty fun on Live though, at first I thought it would be really hard to beat the Xbox Live people since they spend their life on it, but they suck, some are really good but I just pretend I already passed them and I'm trying to double lap them.

“Project Gotham Racing 3 was the main reason to buy a...”

written by Takahiro on 01/02/2006

Project Gotham Racing 3 was the main reason to buy a 360 at launch, all it had to do was be at least almost as good as Project Gotham 2 to still be fantastic, and it doesn't disappoint.

First, the graphics. They are simply amazing, no other 360 game out yet comes close to the all round perfection of PGR3, the cars are extremely detailed, and the in-car view has to be seen to be believed, but the tracks are the real killer app here. There are 5 realised cities in the game including London and New York, and each has been sculpted to perfection. In London you blast by Big Ben, the London Eye and more, if you've been there in reality you'll feel a strange sense of nostalgia as to how accurate it is, and even though you'll be blazing by at 170mph it still creates a brilliant atmosphere that no racing game I've played has ever had.

Aside from that, the speed of the game may surprise you. Unlike other racing games where you start out in a cheap slow car, PGR3 throws you straight in with top class cars, and that's because there are only top class cars in PGR3. You heard right, there's nothing like a Mazda MX5 or Audi TT here; fast cars maybe, but about the slowest car in PGR3 is a Jaguar, and it still holds it's own against Ferrari's and the like. But as if that wasn't enough, the whole sense of speed has been stepped up, at times PGR2 could feel slow, but never with PGR3! Races feel intense, and on harder difficulties the other racers will really give you a hard time, so speed junkies should be right at home here.

Unfortunately there are some minor issues... Although the 5 cities are split into several different track layouts, they can start to feel a bit samey, and not all the game modes will hold your interest. Time Trials are still an acquired taste, and if you don't like them then the TT sections in PGR3 will drag on, and the skill tests (such as the cone gates) can become a test of patience on the harder difficulties, rather than a test of skill, and on easy you'll just find it too boring. Generally if you've played PGR2 you'll feel like you've been here before, it's just too similar in almost all areas.

However, these are minor; stick with what's good about PGR3 and you'll love it, it only has 2 player split screen now but it's still amazing, and this time you can add AI drivers in the mix.

XBox Live is truly something! You can race with people from all over the world, you time trialers out there can post your high scores, and you can even watch the world's best race in Project Gotham TV if you so wish, and then you can try to be featured there yourself!

There a wealth of options for you though, and you can create your own custom tracks through 4 of the cities, and there are hundreds of possibilities to exploited there, and you can even trade them over XBox Live. There is also a photo mode, allowing you to take pictures of your cars in ideal locations in any city, then show them off over Live or to your mates!

So overall it's a great game! Compared to PGR2 it's more of an update than a full sequel, but don't let that put you off, this is still a fantastic game that fully shows off what your 360 can do, and if you're lucky enough to have a HDTV and a good surround sound system you'll be in 7th racing heaven!

“Project Gotham Racing 3 was the title I expected to...”

★★★☆☆

written by Parris1972 on 19/01/2006

Project Gotham Racing 3 was the title I expected to blow my socks off when I purchased the Xbox 360, and I guess for a little while it did.

If you don't currently own a 360, then trust me, the graphics genuinely are as good as the adverts which ran on TV over Christmas. That's not just the video clip sections in the game, but the entire game.

You can select the viewing angle for playing the game, so if like me you prefer to be behind the car, then there are 2 settings (close/distant), and then there is the breathtaking front bumper view, which is by far the fastest but hardest setting. Then you can select behind the wheel. These give the most authentic views, complete with mud, chips and cracks on the windscreen if your driving isn't up to scratch.

On the Sony PS2 and original Xbox there were several rally games which caught my imagination, as damage to the car was real time, and literally hampered your progression. At the end of each stage you kept the mud, the damage and the handling problems.

On PGR3 your car sustains light bodywork damage, hardly loses it's sheen, and although parts like wing mirrors and bumpers crumple or fall off, there are no scraping suspension rods, flat tyres or asphalt splattered machines thundering down the streets. It's a little TOO polished and comfortable for this title to make you even care whether you bump into another car on the track. This is one area where an element of risk could have been injected into the experience. If you felt you had to avoid other cars, you'd actually learn to 'drive' a little more authentically, otherwise you could lose the entire race by hammering your way through without a care. So, you can effectively just put peddle to the metal and drive like a total nutter without worrying.

Where you are held captive is the question, what track comes next, although now that I have almost finished the game, it's not enough to keep me going.

The cars are generally excellent; really fast, and the attention to detail is magnificent.

You really do have to learn how to control each vehicle in order to win, but sadly you don't have to do very much in order to progress to the next level. If you were just eager to finish the game, you could select 'Novice' on each race, and blast your way through with little or no effort.

The jump however, from one level to the next can be off putting, and certainly, I have found on certain levels that it is almost impossible to win. I'd like a playable, challenging game, and I appreciate that the developers decided to ensure that anyone could progress through the game at their own pace, it spoils the game when you 'cheat' by skipping through a hard section by selecting 'Novice'.

There is absolutely NO storyline at all. R:Racing on the PS2 was a terrible game, but held your suspense by creating a tension between other racers.

You never see them in PGR3, there is no podium for them to flick champagne in your face, and there's no fanfare other than opening up another level. I'd have liked this game had there been a storyline, and had I felt that there was some reason for competing against someone, such as in Need for Speed most wanted (which I now play endlessly).

Ultimately, I lost interest and decided that the graphical content and attention to background detail were not enough to hold my gaming attention. It was a costly game (£45 currently), and I feel the majority of the money went towards the graphics rather than the gaming ability.

One last thing to note. If you owned the original Xbox and bought 'Sega GT', then you'll be amazed at how similar this game is. Other than it having better graphics, it seems to be the exact same game. I am bored of that one too. Had someone in the gaming world (magazines) cared to mention this fact, I might have steered clear of this title and headed directly for one of the few game titles to hold my attention in the last year, i.e. Need for Speed: Most Wanted.
