this is our 3rd year here and the worst year here! 3 adults and 1 child in a room for 2 with rusty bunk beds.No view with rafia fencing to stop people looking in from road!very dingy without the sunlight and only 3 sidelights in room[2026].Went to get lilo from our room on day 4 and was told not to come into our room by very rude cleaner who continued to mutter under her breathe as i ignored her ORDER.moved rooms to 2128 very nice but should have had at start of holiday. The night man on reception very rude and carried a police batton god knows why as there was no trouble at hotel but he hated kids which was obvious!!food was cheap and bland.Drinks in plastic cups reminded me of 'IT'A KNOCKOUT'as our room was up the stairs, along the corridor, across the bridge,up more stairs,HERE COME THE BELGIUMS!!joke and so was the hotel.sorry.

On arrival on August 26th at noon I was told that my room would not be ready until 1.00pm and to sit in reception rather sharply by the LADY on reception no offer of a cup of tea / coffee or even a beer while waiting, her reception skills were very poor and yes I do know what I am talking about as I used to work in the service sector and also my sister also worked in hotel reception from 1980s -early 2000s.
After getting key for ROOM 327 WHAT A POOR ROOM the only good points of the room was that it was on the first floor and a big room. On entering the room the curtains were drawn and the room very dark and on opening the curtains to expecting to find patio door and balcony only to find a small window with its shutters shut and on opening the window and shutters to find a view on to a flat roof also one of the shutters would not fully open because of fire exit stairs and with the shutters shut you needed the light on all the time. Another complaint about the room was that you needed to run the hot water shower for up to 5 minutes before you had hot water come through this was not first thing in the morning but late afternoon and the room was not cleaned until after 1500 most days one day not cleaned at all.
The bar staff and dinning room staff and the MEN ONLY on reception were excellent but the food was a let down. The soups were very watery and not cream soup at all. The cold buffet was good but the hot meal had very poor choice only 1 meat 1 fish 1 veggie to choice from and of poor quality. The dessert could also have been better and closing I did eat out a few times and found the Cheers bar and The Duke of Devonshire both excellent also The Wet your Whistle bar next to Rasha tattoist for a drink good as well also the tattooist is very good as well.
In closing I would rate this hotel as zero minus at least 3 stars.

On arrival August 26th at 1200. I was told that my room would not be ready until 13.00 and to sit in reception rather sharply by the lady on reception all I wanted to do was go and have a rest after being up all night after getting to the airport for flight and check in. No offer of a drink while waiting. The ladies reception skills very poor and yes I do know what I am writing about as my sister used to do reception work in 1980s to early 2000s in hotels in the forest of dean. The men on reception were excellent.
When going to the room what a let down on entering the room which had the curtains drawn and on opening them hoping to find balcony no such luck only a small window with its shutters shut and on opening window and shutters to find that all I WAS LOOKING ONTO WAS A FLAT ROOF. With shutters shut you needed light on all the time, also to get hot water through the shower you needed sometimes to run the water for nearly 5 minutes. The cleaning was not usually done until 1500 or latter or not done on one day at all.
The bar staff and dinning room staff were excellent but the food very poor, SOUPS were very watery and cold buffet choice good but hot food choice very poor and poor standard. I did eat out sometimes and found CHEERS BAR AND DUKE OF DEVONSHIRE very good also just for a drink the wet your whistle pub next to Rasha
Tattooist very welcoming also the tattooist very good I hear. I would go back to Cala d'or but not use this hotel

The bedding was not regularly changed, they turned the sheets over, the pool area was dangerous and the chlorine in the pool turned everything green including hair and swim suites. It definately is not value for money as you are very limited on what you can drink when All Inclusive.

The hotel in general is not that bad, the staff are friendly but some of the guests that stay there are very ignorant. The food is the same thing every morning and two different main dishes on an evening, I personally ate salad for the two weeks that we were there except for a couple of occasions where the food was bearable to me. On the plus side they do do a children's menu but they don't tell you this you have to ask. We shall not be going back to this hotel but we will go back to cala'dor which we found very friendly and clean.

written by bentjill on 05/09/2005

I have just come back from the Hotel Cala Gran, Cala Dor, what a disappointment! This hotel should have been given a 2 star rating not a 3 star. The room shabby and smelt musty. The bedroom wasn't big enough to swing a cat in, never mind accommodating 3 adults. If you like unusual choices of food, then visiting this hotel is a must. Three nights out of the seven that we stayed there had adaquate meals but the rest were terrible. Ended up eating out for the rest, even though we went all inclusive.
The resort of Cala dor was beautiful, and the beach was very well maintained. Plenty of restaurants and bars too visit. The stay at the Cala Gran hasn't put me of going back to Cala dor and will be trying a different hotel on our next visit.

“Cala Gran Hotel - I feel compelled to write this...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by topside2 on 19/06/2005

Cala Gran Hotel - I feel compelled to write this review to prevent other poor souls from experiencing the hellish holiday I have just experienced. I first went to Cala d' or Mallorca in 2003, and loved practically every minute of it. That year I stayed at the 4 star Tucan Hotel which is directly in front on the Cala Gran Hotel.

This wonderful holiday in 2003 is what prompted me to book again for a holiday in early june 2005 - what a mistake that was!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This year we stayed at the Cala Gran Hotel on a half board basis, although we never actually dined at the hotel for either breakfast or evening meal for the entire holiday. This was because from our hotel balcony food could be viewed being taken from the kitchens outside (uncovered) with swarms of flies buzzing around it before being taken in to the restaurant - needless to say we were more than a little put off.

Dining at the hotel takes place at the hotel next door called the Costa del Sur. The hotels have been joined together with a bridge. This bridge could be directly observed from our hotel room balcony and can only be described as an eye-sore, and also added to the torture of our stay. Imagine spending every night watching hundreds of diners (very noisely) treking accross a bridge to eat. We had no privacy whatsoever, I could cope with no decent view, but being gawped at by hundreds of people while I tried to relax was just to much. Don't expect a decent view at this hotel, as it simply doesn't exist. Very few rooms appear to overlook the pool or beach.

The maid came every day to clean the room, but I would hardly describe it as clean when she had finished. I feel the beds were made, and the floor was given a quick brush. I would often get out of the shower nice and clean, and my feet would be filthy again by time I reached my bed.

The interior of the rooms is quite dated, which is probably what gives them a shabby feel. the pillows are horrendous, if you have a bad neck, or need a particular type of pillow, or even more than one pillow to sleep, I suggest you take your own. The pillows reminded me of door draft excluders my grandmother used to make from old pieces of material or socks before the days of central heating. Sleeping was very uncomfortable and impossible at times.

The hotel pool is very small, and there are few sunbeds, you have to get out early if you want one. The bar snacks and drinks are very pricey, be sure to take out a second mortgage before you go if you intend to dine there.

There are two othere pools accessible to hotel guests. One is located at the partner hotel - Costa del a Sur, but be warned this is also quite small, and there is often a sunbed shortage. However, there is another pool at the adjoining Cala Gran Apartments (which are much nicer than the hotel), which is quieter and has plenty of sunbeds. The only drawback to this pool is the couple of stray cats riddled with fleas that hang around it waiting for scraps of food, and drinking from the pool - needless to say this is more than a little off-putting.

I could have coped with the grubby hotel, if the resort itself is able to compensate for this, but sadly I feel Cala d'Or no longer can. I and my boyfriend both agreed the resort had 'gone down', and was quite dirty.

The restaurants are boring and samely. The standard of the food has also gone down. A couple of years ago, I really enjoyed some good meals at the Casablanca Resturant. In particular, the spaghetti napolitana, I asked for it again this year, but it wasn't the same. This year it resembled a tin of cheap supermarket spaghetti, which, I have to say, would probably be much nicer.

I hated the holiday that much that I left 2 days early and went to Palma city and had a fantastic time, the food was excellent and there was lots of choice.

Cala d 'Or itself needs to move with the times. It is definitely not for couples (and this includes us), as I am sure you will be completely overwhelmed by the mass of babies and children. At one point I felt like buying a pram just to fit in.

On the plus side, the beach at Cala d' Or is quite lovely, although very small, so if your a beach babe, be sure to get there early.

To sum up, Cala d' Or is easy, it is now a slighly upmarket version of Blackpool, probabaly very much enjoyed by families, but it is not for us. Furthermore, if anyone does read this and decides to go to Cala d 'Or, it is definitely worth paying the extra money for the 4 star Hotel Tucan, it is cleaner and far more civilised.

p.s If you're a vegetarian wanting to go to Cala d'Or, forget it. I am one myself and I really struggled for variety, and most of all nutritious, tasty food.
