“Short changed for large groups”

★★★☆☆

written by Canoe4Boo on 03/08/2015

Captive audience with canoist so they don't have to try too hard. Great at accommodating a large group (for a charity event) and fitting to our timings, but under served so not enough to go around. Some were left hungry. Food ok but basic.

Our stag party camped opposite the Boat Inn on a canoeing trip, and although we hadn't booked, the staff promised they'd fit us in somewhere. We ate in the bar rather than the restaurant, which suited us fine. The menu was large enough to include something for everyone, yet small enough to help the more indecisive amongst us! Once ordered, the food came quickly, and it was good tasty pub food. The starters included soup, sweet & sour prawns, whitebait and deep fried Camembert. Main courses included pies, bangers & mash, steaks and faggots (sorry to any veggies, I didn't check the selection). These were accompanied by huge bowls of rough cut chips - enough to sate the appetites of 11 hungry canoeists! They even let us order desserts just before the kitchen closed, after we'd had a chance to digest.

The staff were friendly and accommodating; the atmosphere was nice, but improved once we discovered the jukebox. It was a shame that no real ale was available for most of the evening, but the keg IPA was fine.
