“WORST PUB EVER VISITED - 15.9.2011”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 11/09/2011

This is the first pub in Wales I have been too and feel a clear hate for english people. This pub was not interested what so ever in visitors, just locals despite it being a pub on the river. A group of us canoed and camped on a nearby site. We asked for meals and they clearly wasnt to keen on catering for us despite us calling before hand. The food come out and many of us ordered burgers. As a result we got burgers which were rock hard, on a bun of plain bread no butter, undercooked chips and no salad. On many occasions we stood at the bar for upto 20 minutes waiting to be served for a local to come in and get served straight away. Sadly we had no choice but to stop there because there are no pubs nearby. At one point when standing near the bar a remark was made by the bar man about welsh culture intended at us. Sadly considering our group consisted of former army, navy and olympic judo professionals we didnt expect to be treated so terribly. Never ever use this pub, it is outdated like the people that work there. Its quite clear that the pub is being kept alive by its positioning i.e. the river not the food, people or service. AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE.

This is the best Pub in the area - what did you do to annoy the Landlord? You must have been pretty unpleasant! More fool you!

Not only is it in England but it sells Doom Bar, a fantastic ale from the south west, and Cornish cod for its fish 'n Chips, which are the best in the Hay-on-Wye area.

“Nasty Cleaner!”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 20/06/2011

This weekend we canoed from Hay and we booked a table at the boat for lunch for 12 of us...On arrival we had a small carrier bag of rubbish from the morning on the river. As their was a bin outside the boat we naturally deposited it in the bin outside. The bar staff were very friendly and showed us to our table and we ordered our food and a few of us went outside to have a cigarrette. What happened next can only be described as a scene out of night of the living dead... This mad woman ( who had obviously broken off her leash) came running out of the adjoining house and flew to the bin screeching " who has put this rubbish in the bin Who has done this?" Myself and my friends sat in shock at the picnic table not daring to catch her eye in case we were turned to stone.. The next thing the mad woman dives into the bin retrieves the small bag of rubbish and launches herself at me, shoving the carrier bag of rubbish in my face asking "is it you is it you". By now there were quiet a few people outside the pub and we explained that we had put the rubbish in the bin so as not to take it into the pub littering the inside and how we did not think it was unreasonable to put the rubbish in the bin. Mad woman yelled "i'm sick of you lot coming here eating your own food and putting rubbish in the bin" we explained we were not eating our own food and booked a table but she made us take the carrier bag of rubbish back into the pub. When we stumbled back to the table embarrassed we complained as the mad woman was that rude we considered cancelling our meal. We all agreed she must be the landlady and if that is how she is running a business we would leave. We spoke to the waitress who apologised extensively stating that the mad woman is not the landlady but the CLEANER!!!! Myself and my party found this extremely hysterical given the fact it is her job to er.. um clean.. and our only crime was putting rubbish in yes you've guessed it the bin!!!! we had a fantastic meal and the food was second to none but my advice to the owners of the boat is ...GET A NEW CLEANER!.....

i was not happy with the staff, they had no idea what was in the dish that i asked them about, they simply stared at me as though i was something off another planet. The atmosphere was dead, had no energy to it at all. The food itself was good quality food and well presented. i would not recommend this pub to my fellow friends.

We had been to The Boat Inn a few years back & checked various reviews, which seemed a mixed bag, but decided to give it a trial. We went for the Sunday carvery & what we got was the worst pub meal in living memory. The plates were cold, & the vegetables were even colder. They took the plates away to microwave, just to try & get a little warmth in the food. The beef turned out to be overcooked, tough & indigestible. Much of this we had to leave on the plate & we decided to pass on the desserts. There was nothing about this disaster that matched the positive comments we had read. We drove back to Hereford to our local pub & had an edible meal

The Boat Inn is typical of a pub not needing to try as the camp site close by provides a captive audience of customers.

Meal was average, starter came with main course! Asked for a rare steak and came completely over cooked.

Would avoid to stop disappointment

We stayed at the Boat Inn in rooms above the pub as part of a canoe trip. The evening meal was good but a bit pricey. B+B hugely expensive at £60 for a double room and £50 for a single room. Rooms had not been vacummed for some time as remains of the dead spider will testify, also dirty towels and stained bed linen, door lock not working and not fixed, shower to hot or too cold, really loud duke box playing until 2am, pub not quiet until 4am. Piles of junk on the landing of the B+B rooms, shower gel had not been changed (i.e one small broken bottle), kettle was broken in one of the rooms. Fried breakfast was not too bad. The chef did apologise for the noise the night before. Staff were generally friendly.

This pub I think gets alot of trade from canoeists travelling down the Wye. It is on the river and on the face of it looks like a good place to stay if you do not want to carry a tent in your canoe. Do not be fooled - this is a truley terrible B+B and should be avoided. If you do stay bring ear plugs although at the volume of the duke box I doubt whether even this will allow you any sleep.

“The Boat Inn, Whitney-On-Wye is Dreadful. Don't go...”

written by Disgruntled Diner on 26/05/2009

The Boat Inn, Whitney-On-Wye is Dreadful. Don't go there. The service was offhand to the point of rudeness and we were treated with supercilious disdain throughout. On arrival - on time - we were told our table was still being laid, then left to kick our heels at the unattended bar whilst that happened.

We declined a starter but were kept waiting 50 minutes for our main course - unacceptable in a busy restaurant but doubly so in one where only two or three other tables were occupied. An polite enquiry as to how much longer we would have to wait was met with disinterest. We had ordered salmon steaks; one with chive sauce and the other with parsley sauce; when they arrived and we asked which was which they retorted, "I've no idea, I'm not the chef - you'll just have to try them". A subsequent request for a glass of wine was 'forgotten' by the same person, who was, she said, too busy "multi-tasking", and clearly felt no need to apologise. There was no hot water or functioning hand dryer in the men's toilets. As a final insult we were presented with a completely inaccurate bill, which included the orders from the table next to us! This took them almost 15 minutes to sort out, and again no apology of any kind was offered. We were left with the definite impression that our booking a meal there was nothing but an inconvenience to the staff, but they may rest assured that they will never be troubled by our custom again.

I have been to Boat Inn only a few days ago and the service was second to none. Friendly staff went out of their way to make our dining experience enjoyable, food was terriffic and would certainly recommend to others.

I disagree with this review because...it doesn't sound like the same venue we visited. The staff were very polite, kind and helpful to my guests, who were elderly,we were greeted at the door and shown to our tables. There was iced water available and an order was taken for our drinks, and then our meal order. One guest requested steamed fish, which wasn't on the menu, but that didn't pose a problem. All our guests were served together in what I consider to be a reasonable time for FRESH FOOD made with FRESH INGREDIENTS not the run of the mill mass produced microwaved pub grub. No frozen chips are served here. Well done to you all at The Boat Inn. Even Gordon Ramsey would enjoy a meal at your pub.

“The service in The Boat Inn pub and restaurant is rude...”

The service in The Boat Inn pub and restaurant is rude to the point where it's just best to leave rather than suffer the frustration of trying to get anywhere with them. The food is expensive for the Welsh borders (£9 for a veggie bake). One of the bars has the most revolting smell of stale beer. Overall it's not worth going there. I would recommend visiting one of the pubs a couple of miles in either direction, as you will get service, food and drink in a pleasant atmosphere, which is unlikely to happen here.
