“Sad, but time to move”

★★☆☆☆

written by on 25/08/2012

Not sure what is happening at Demon, its been a great service for years but all appears to be downhill. Like the last review, spam, spam, spam - and some I'm concerned about. My PC has more protection than NATO. They really need a re-think around customers, I may regret moving - but its possibly time to move on. Sad, they were once the best ISP and I hope they can sort things out.

I have been with Demon for 3 years but it's time to move! The speed is getting slower and slower and as for calling the help line.........don't get me going! All calls are handled by India and although polite the people involved are useless!..always blaming everything else....and clearly reading from a script.

I have had to wait for up to 20 minutes on hold whilst listening to piped music that sounds like it's come from a 70's (naughty) movie.

Demon really have developed the capacity to make a calm man wild!

I'm off to Zen

Demon used to be a pioneer with cost effective services and reasonable services. Their customer services sucks now. Expect to spend a minimum of 30 minutes in a phone queue if you are lucky.

When there is a major problem the don't seem to answer their phones at all, nor do they provide status updates.

I suspect the support degradation is not unconnected with their ownership by C&W

“I've been with Demon since August 1997. Back then they...”

★★☆☆☆

written by on 24/03/2010

I've been with Demon since August 1997. Back then they were the cream of ISPs. I had occasion to call the much-lauded 24-hour helpdesk at 2am once in 1998, even at that time in the morning the UK-based staff were friendly and genuinely helpful.

However, they have become progressively worse down the years, especially since the ADSL2+ 'upgrade'. The net is bordering on unuseable during the evenings; I play some games online and simply cannot rely on my connection anymore.

Whilst I don't like to criticise the individuals who have to work in call centres, I have to say generally Demon's customer service is woeful compared to the good old days of the UK-based 24-hour helpdesk. The idea of having to call them for anything fills me with dread, the knowledge I'll be sat on the phone listening to that one piece of music for well over half an hour at the very least.

I got a new debit card last year, yet despite informing Demon customer support of the new details they continued to charge the old card for several months.

Their website is, quite frankly, utterly useless. It's hard to find any useful information, it appears large parts of it hasn't been updated in quite some time, the system status section is inadequate. It badly needs a major redesign to bring it into the 21st century; I don't think the main design has been changed since 2001.

It breaks my heart to say it but this once-brilliant ISP really has lost it big time. They're overpriced, they no longer offer the unique features they were famous for in the 90s (although they still give you a whopping 20meg of webspace), unreliable and flakey connection - it really isn't worth contemplating.

I'll be moving soon and will ditch Demon for good. A sad state of affairs considering I've been with them for nearly 13 years.

If you want to contact anyone regarding Demon Internet you'll be put through to an Indian Call Centre. After 15 years I wanted to speak to someone who could make a decision BUT no one can do anything but tell you what you already know. Connection Speeds great but customer services are 100% useless. I am convinced that C&W/Thus are actively trying to ensure every Demon customer leaves for someone else. A truly shameful experience with a level of professionalism equal to killing a business which once had a million customers!

All in all, I would never use Demon again. Their service used to be good 5-6 years ago although has really gone down hill since. Avoid this ISP!

Was a good service, shame it has turned into what I feel is an unreliable service
Unhelpful customer service, I feel they blame the customer although it is not my fault. Not yet recieved reply to emails.
Line speed rarely above 1.5mb often below 1mb in day not good enough for the money.

“Been with Demon for years, both at work and home. ...”

★★★☆☆

written by mike7171 on 23/10/2007

Been with Demon for years, both at work and home. Network wise, I have no real complaint - they have always been very reliable.

But when things do go wrong, the technical support, now offshore, and perhaps in keeping with the name "Demon", is diabolical.

If you use e-mail, it's normally a 24 hour turnround, and you end up answering the same questions again - it's as if the staff only read the latest e-mail and not the call history.

On the phone, you end up speaking to a very nice polite person who simply hasn't a clue what you're talking about. He/she then proceeds to work through a menu, racking up your phone bill and taking forever to get to a point where a more knowledgeable person would arrive immediately.

If I hit any major technical problems in future, I will use Google, study the manuals, phone a friend, change ISP, anything to avoid that experience again.

“Demon Broadband were never cheap but now they are...”

★★☆☆☆

written by gromit on 20/07/2006

Demon Broadband were never cheap but now they are prohibitively expensive. I am with them for the good line speed and the fact that I can use the line for whatever I want (no port restrictions, access to all newsgroups, bit torrent downloads, no bandwidth throttling etc). For this I am willing to pay a premium, it's what sets Demon, Zen and others apart from the crippled, capped and restricted services offered by others.

With their current 8Mbps upgrade rollout they are introducing the ominous "Fair Use Policy" (read "usage cap"). This includes bandwidth throttling after downloading an unspecified amount within a month. They want to keep their premium price and run a restricted service! If a capped service was what I was after I would be on one of the "free" providers like Orange or Sky by now.

I will be moving to one of the remaining premium providers (Zen maybe?) as a result. Avoid Demon on principle!

“Both of us are techies in our household. We need 24/7...”

★★★☆☆

written by karenmeidl on 10/01/2006

Both of us are techies in our household. We need 24/7 internet uptime for the work we do.

Over the past 3 years, Demon Broadband has been very good - IF all is going well. Access speeds are excellent, and mostly DNS servers stay up. Recently though, they have gone down quite often (mostly during the night, but sometimes during day as well). Customer support is, and always has been, pretty bad. It takes AGES to get through, and when you do its a lottery as to whether you're going to get anything done.

I tried setting up a second account with them at another property, and that took 3 months. They cancelled twice without letting us know because our phone line wasn't up to the 2MB we requested. It also took 2 months to handle an account cancellation/domain transfer (and charged us for 2 accounts in the interim).

For straightforward everyday not-too-technical usage though, they are pretty good.
