I have a Platinum Reserve credit card which comes with a hefty annual fee and includes a level of travel insurance. I have relied on it in the past and thankfully have not had a claim. However, in the past 6 months the program has changed for the worse. First of all, the policy is broken into sections so that an incident that results in a claim may mean lodging several claims if they fall into different categories. Next, the excess for every claim has gone up from $100 earlier this year to $250 now. Add to this that the travel agent charged 3% for me to use the card and you have a toxic mix. Assume that your claim falls into say 3 sections of the policy which means $750 in excess plus the 3% travel agent surcharge for using the card, which came to $360 for my booking and the result is a very expensive policy even if I take into account that I'll get reward points that I can use to reduce the cost of the travel. And by the way, the Platinum Reserve travel insurance does NOT include any cover for car rental related losses which most other companies do. A bad product which should be avoided.

I purchased travel insurance from American Express at a significant premium over the cheaper alternatives as I thought they would be more likely to provide good customer service and deal with any claim professionally. How wrong I was!
Customer service was appalling and they did not provide, or even attempt to provide, the assistance outlined in the policy booklet.
Then they initially refused to settle my valid claim in full, with no reasons given. Only the threat of a complaint to the regulator made them pay up.
Next time I will save my money and stay away from American Express.

I just booked a trip for 5 to italy. price was higher then calling the standard number for the same flight. took me 4 hours to book, there were problems with the sytem girl tranfers me to plat. same flight cost more... plus they would not waive the 39 fee per ticket which the other operator said she would just do since I waited so long.... NO ADVantage to being a plat. member... it hurt me not help@
