“Humming”

★★★☆☆

written by on 16/09/2012

My Wife and I like this clock radio. Sound is good. Operation is easy. The humming is annoying, but my Wife did not notice it for three nights. She put cotton wool pads (a few under each foot) and it has helped a lot. I would not buy another one of these.

This is my second clock radio after 6 years, and yes the first one had a transformer buzz which was adequately reduced by placing it on a rubber mat.
I love the sound from such a small box, and the fact it was one of the only DAB clock radios available when DAB was first introduced.
Dual alarm settings is a great function for us.
When the first one started to have problems, I went to look for another! If you want longevity, look elsewhere, if you want good DAB sound from a bed-side alarm with dual alarm settings, buy one, and have one spare, because you will miss it if it goes wrong!

“The Bush DABCR2003 is quiet a well designed bedside...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Ieuanfawr on 30/03/2008

The Bush DABCR2003 is quiet a well designed bedside clock radio but severely let down by its build quality. When the third one started switching on and off erratically I gave up with it and a bought a totally different model.

1. After a few months, the first radio failed completely. The clock was fine, but the radio would not come on at all. It was exchanged for free by the retailers (not Amazon).

2. After a short period of time, the internal transformer of the second one buzzed at an unacceptably loud volume all the time. It was was replaced under guarantee

3. The third was fine for about 6 months, but then the radio would not stay on, and switch on and off erratically. The guarantee period had now expired.

If it worked reliably, and more of the buttons were on the top rather than the front, it would be very good.

I have now a DAB radio from another manufacturer.

“The other people's problems of buzzing... ”

★★★★☆

written by Ach on 23/10/2007

The other people's problems of buzzing...

My brother got one of these 1st. After a few months I noticed a buzzing from his.
I got a different DAB radio for Christmas, couldn't get a signal, brought it back to the shop and ended up with the Bush as the only price comparable DAB radio.

It's been great. No buzz.

Noticed that there is now no buzz from my brother's one either. Percussive maintenance solved the problem for him - turned it upside down and let it fall on his bedside table from about 4 inches - problem solved. (reminds me of how I fixed an old Benkson radio of mine - but this is not a Benkson, so don't worry)

All in all a great product, especially considering the price!

Of course having not owned any other DAB radios my opinion is based solely on what I want this product to do -
- It gives me perfect access to all stations available in my local mux (outperforming a dearer stand alone player I was given as a gift)
- It hasn't failed in getting any station that is available
- there is no persistent noise (the unit is 1 foot from my head when I sleep and I hear nothing)
- the display tells me more than I expected (having been used to FM radio in the past)
- this is my reliable Sony cube that I used for over ten years in DAB form

Only bad point I can see is no FM/AM option, but as I can get all stations I need on my mux it's not a problem for me, might be an irk for a real radio enthusiast though.

“I would not recomend a Bush DABCR2003 radio to anyone....”

written by kpgills on 17/09/2004

I would not recomend a Bush DABCR2003 radio to anyone. The unit itself is small and compact, but the plastic it's built in makes it appear like a much cheaper radio. Despite this the sound produced (above the buzzing) is very good.

The most anoying thing is the hummingbuzzing the power supply makes. Even with my TV on I could still hear the humming, and with a silent room it could be heard at the bottom of the stairs (no kidding).

I've tried three of these units and they all do the same thing. Designed for the bedroom, but you'll need to unplug it to get to sleep!

It's worth paying the extra and getting the Bug, or something similar.

“Bush DABCR2003 - Bought this because I've been very...”

written by Consumer on 14/09/2004

Bush DABCR2003 - Bought this because I've been very impressed with my Teac DAB radio and wanted to be able to listen to DAB stations on a clock radio.

It was a waste of money. Transformer hum is loud. It actually makes the rather flimsy case vibrate and the front transparent panel vibrates against the case and buzzes. I had to unplug it to get to sleep. The answer to this would be an off-board transformer on the plug, but it's not available.

There is a pre-set button allowing storage of 10 stations, but you have to scroll through the channels to get to them. There are no separate pre-set buttons as such. You can't really use it with your eyes closed, contacts out, specs off, etc.

Reception isn't brilliant but is acceptable. Sound quality is much worse than the Teac. It sounds like a £15 clock radio.

All in all, it's not a good choice for a clock radio and I am going to swap it for a Pure Tempus.

I have had two Bush DABCR2003 DAB Digital Radios from Argos and I am about to try for a third! The first one buzzed to the point that it had to be turned off at night. The next one was silent (bliss)but the scrolling data display was not as clear as the first due to the characters 'persistence'. Both suffered from clock LED segment brightness variations which was obvious both at high and low brightness levels. Having said all this the internal sound is good and even better using the line-out facility with Hifi.

“Bush isn't known for good build quality, the Bush...”

★★★★☆

written by apprentice on 30/11/2003

Bush isn't known for good build quality, the Bush DABCR2003 digital radio is no exception. Although on the whole it looks High-Tech, the LED display is poorly lit and the buttons rattle. It's very easy to set up but I only received 19 channels, where my Intempo PG-01 recieves 45. It's very fussy where I place it for reception, but maybe I am expecting too much from its thin wire antenna.

I've read specifications on this radio that claim it includes an FM tuner, this is not true. I have not been able to find out whether I have a newer model, but I bought this through Great Universal Stores November 2003, so assume it must be.

On the plus side, it has very good sound from the compact speakers and there are options to display everything available about your reception and broadcast. The alarm clock works as expected with a 2 tier sound level on the buzzer (the second being VERY loud) and generally this is all easy to set up. There is no 24hr clock option but you do get 2 separate alarms.

To conclude, you would be better spending your money on the Intempo, which has an alarm clock facility, better reception and certainly better build quality.
