“Gone down the pan”

★☆☆☆☆

written by 354Larkin on 22/12/2014

It used to be a good site until a few years ago when it was sold to two guys. The former is the owner of an online travel agency, the latter works for a travel agency too. They claim to be independent. Don't voice your opinion on their website, else you will get a rude response from the owner and get kicked out. Rather ironic that when asking your members for opinions about hotels/resorts, you are not given the opportunity to voice your opinion about Holidaytruths. Stay well clear. Much better out there!

“Travelodge/Waitrose Sidcup London”

written by on 03/12/2013

Car park Waitrose customers only.£1 per hour Two set down places for travellers. Bad signage. No useful information at reception.Nearest car park 400yards away. Room extreme Spartan conditions. One plastic chair. Double bed with engineering brick mattress. Absolutely no give. Waitrose early morning deliveries make an early call pointless. High priced ,stale boxed breakfast. No sleep, considered sleeping in the car. Economy hotel?? Yes, but this was ridiculous. Cancelled second night ran for home.

“holidaytruths.co.uk is not a review site, it's mostly...”

★★★★☆

written by steve8482 on 04/09/2010

holidaytruths.co.uk is not a review site, it's mostly a discussion board used by people in the UK looking for advice. It doesn't attempt to compete with Tripadvisor on recommendations but doesn't get as confusing as Tripadvisor when people from other countries add suggestions that aren't relevant (or accurate) to the question.

Software uses an American auto censor that stops you using certain words to avoid legal action - unfortunately the one that gets blocked most is con , even if used in air-con !! Administrators check posts for obvious infiltration by travel companies and they are shown up when possible.

People with genuine problems get serious advice but anyone making a mountain out of a molehill will be told that! Threads are sometimes allowed to run on long past their sell by dates.

Marhaba's Response to steve8482's Review

Written on: 12/02/2011

I found this review very helpful because it sums up exactly what the site is about. Advice can be found on most holiday-related areas, from people who have actually been there and done that. The fact that such care is taken not to allow hotel owners to write self-congratulatory reports on their own establishments means that people can have faith in what they read. I have been a member for many years and the help and support I have received has been invaluable. Whether one wants advice about a specific hotel, the cost of transfers or something as simple as the most effective sun-burn treatment you will quite probably get it there. Like all sites which give reviews of hotels and resorts one has to bear in mind that one man's meat is another man's poison of course.

Lyme Bay Holidays website DO NOT USE they hide their terms and conditions and only expose limited information via FAQ's which hide the truth. They make you responsible for paying for the whole holiday if you cancel, yet do not clearly give you that information. Read the FAQ's and you think its simple, try & cancel and they come out with loads! They didn't advertise the holiday for re-sale for 3 weeks + and then claimed a website error!!! but still want the money. Reported to Trading Standards

“Holidaytruths presents as an independent ,consumer...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 28/04/2010

Holidaytruths presents as an independent ,consumer orientated site. However this is not the case. It is just another sales driven site. Loaded with advertizing. Grossly over moderated ,keeps genuing gripes out. Main contributors are mainly Travel trade people. Look at the profiles, Blatant or what !! The mildest complaint or critisim of any of their advertizers brings several cruising mods at once to attack you, both in mod form and posing as genuine posts (check the syntax and grammar similarities in many of the posts,). The apparent owner of the site is heavily involved in the advertizing of travel trade related services both in the UK and Portugal. The travel trade has become very aware of the negative impact on their sales by review sites, and countering these has become a major problem. Thus the setting up of dozens of so called independant review sites. Post a complaint or two and duck. However good for a laugh and some harmless entertainment. But don't take it too seriously.

Marhaba's Comment

Written on: 12/02/2011

I found this review not helpful because having been a member of HT for many years I find my experience is the complete opposite. There are indeed one or two members who are involved in the travel trade but they state their involvement clearly and have been very helpful in sorting out problems for members. Many of us are regular visitors to certain areas so naturally we post more often. Advice is given on complaints and, unless they are patently spurious, are treated with respect. It is always pointed out that anything said is only the opinion of the member posting and there is a firm of solicitors specialising in travel law which we recommend people contact for legal advice if necessary.

★★★★★

written by Joanne Bailey on 12/04/2010

I just wanted to let people know about the wonderful experience we had booking a Golden Triangle trip in India through the company Caper Travel. During the booking process we were in constant contact by email with an allotted agent, so he became a friend! We were able to choose exactly how our holiday was to run and all queries were answered immediately and fully and so our anxieties about going to a different country were totally laid to rest. One of the most worrying was passing money over in advance, but we can assure you that all was safe and the holiday very well managed and became an experience to remember forever. So thank you to Caper Travel and all involved

Holiday Truths is okay but there are far better review sites with more up to date information (Trip Advisor) is the best one. Very clique - some moderators don't like people to have opinions.
If they don't like your replies, some can ban you from posting.

It appears to me that if they don't like what I say they edit or ban me. If you don't agree with the moderators in my experience you have had it.

I could be wrong but I think this site may well have links to a travel lawyer, as they always recommend them.

I found this review helpful because...It's probably true about this website you wouldn't keep directing people to a Travel Lawyer unless you were getting anything back or you are the travel lawyer running it big money.

“Arrived at the airport and didn't get stopped by the...”

★★★★★

written by on 17/06/2008

Arrived at the airport and didn't get stopped by the drug squad to be strip searched this time, thankfully. It seems they have started renovating the airport and it's a lot brighter and cleaner than it was the last time we went. Taxi to the hotel was 15 euros and there is always plenty outside, they have set tariffs to different parts of the island, all reasonable prices. Or check out this for prices and other info rodos.com, we spoke to a couple in the hotel who booked taxi transfers in the UK through the agent and they paid over £100. On arrival at the hotel the main foyer is modern, large, airy, nice and cool. The reception staff are very friendly and speak good English. The bar is open until 2am but you have to pay for your drinks as the free bar shuts at 11pm on the dot so the only problem if you're arriving after 2am is there is nowhere to get a drink as there are no facilities in the room, there is a little kiosk shop just up the road if your desperate though. The downside on the drinks is there isn't a lot of choice, local beer on a help yourself basis, vodka, rum, brandy, gin, etc. cocktails have to be paid for but aren't too expensive, on average 3 euros. The room we had was on the 1st floor at the back looking over the children's play area and the rear pool, the room was basic but clean, the maids came in every day made the beds and left fresh towels. Air con doesn't start being used until July in the guest rooms so be prepared for hot sticky nights, we used our hair drier on the cool setting and blew it into the fridge when we got really hot, DIY air con. The pool area at the front of the hotel is lovely, sun beds are a bit crammed in and as usual its towels at dawn if you want to get close to the pool, be prepared to get up early to stake your claim with your towel if you do, some guests even left there towels on overnight, I ' m afraid its got to the stage of 'if you cant beat em join em' where ever you go now. There are lots of seating areas around the hotel so always somewhere to sit inside or out, shady or sunny. The pool at the rear of the hotel is a proper sun trap but there is shade too and it's a lot quieter but you need to be up early for this too. The hotel is clean and tidy, suitable for disabled with ramps and lifts, not a lot for kids to do apart from the pool, a few amusements and the playground round the back but it is a little run down, there weren't many kids there anyway. There are tennis courts for hotel use, they are round the back. The small pebble beach is over the road, a very busy road too, but the traffic noise didn't bother us, if you want to go over to the beach and darent brave the road use the underpass at the hotel next door on the left. I found the layout of the dining room a bit dangerous though as there are 2 steps running all the way along from the serving area to most of the tables, so watch where you are walking. The food is ok, like most other all inclusive hotels but there was enough choice and plenty of puddings. The waiters are very efficient and the dining room runs smoothly and there was always somewhere to sit without the handbag reserving! The hotel staff are very helpful, hardworking and friendly, Yannis the barman is a good source of info and has a wicked sense of humour, he works very hard to keep the queue down but will chat if he has the time. The animations team are a good laugh and keep you entertained with their antics. We went to Rhodes town a couple of times. We did walk there the first time, its hard work in the heat or you could get a taxi, this costs 6 euros. The old part is nice lots of winding alleyways, shops and restaurants; the new town is ok too for shopping. One thing I wasn't too happy with was the baggage room, this was round the side of the hotel and wasn't locked so anyone could have walked in but fortunately crime on Rhodes is quite low. All in all it's a nice Greek owned hotel and we did enjoy our stay here.

written by mrnkar on 15/03/2008

I have been using this site for about 7 years. I never book a holiday without checking out the accommodation first on this site. I have also learned lots of ways to save money and now book most of my holidays DIY. Anything you need to know you will find it somewhere on it or become a member and ask the questions yourselves. I would truly be lost without this site, and am very grateful for the hard work everyone puts into it to keep it running and most of all for free. Well recommend Holiday Truths.

written by gordon shepherd on 27/11/2007

Asked the carpet to be removed as it was filthy no replacement given. We had screw nails put in the main door to keep it together. Bathroom door would not open or close. Seating at the table was filthy had to be covered with towels. No room to eat at the table. Kitchen was only about two feet from the bed. the chair at the dressing table had a leg missing it toppled when used and was absolutely filthy had to put out on the balcony. The balcony level was above our heads when seated we were looking at a brick wall. there was very little light or sun coming in to the area because of the height of the wall. There was bird poo on the balcony wall it was not safe to eat on the balcony also because there was cigarette ends being dropped from the above rooms we had to isolate the balcony. we were never in the room only to sleep. We were given another room packed all our stuff went to the room to find it had not been cleaned had to return to our old room decided to hack it out for the rest of the holiday.

★☆☆☆☆

written by Libras on 15/09/2007

I first joined HT 3 weeks ago. I found it a good information forum and soon found myself answering some questions based on my own personal travel experiences. Traveling directions etc. I think I answered about 9 questions in total. 3 of my posts (on different threads over the 3 weeks) included a company name. (Looking at all the threads on the forum it can easily be interpreted that company names/Urls can be given out, about 98% of the replies include a company name).

I went to log on oneday to find my account had been banned. I emailed them to ask why. They sent back a one line reply accusing me of 'pushing'. (spamming)

I am a KS3/4 teacher. I have nothing to Spam.

I can see they can have a problem with spammers and it is an issue they do need to address, but they need to address it appropriately. I wish they had contacted me saying 'Hey, you cannot put a company name in your replies' or they could had edited my replies or something instead of the instant ban along with their accusation. I was very offended.

written by SDUDLEY on 12/08/2005

Overall, the hotel we stayed in in Gran Canaria, was a good hotel to stay in, in terms of proximity to attractions and amenities, but not many amenities on the hotel site itself.
I would recommend the ground floor if you have kids, so you can avoid the stairs with pushchairs !
I recommend the off-site supermarket close by for supplies, as it is cheaper, and better stocked.
Maspolomas as a resort is lovely! It is a quiet family place where the restaurants really look after you well. Aquapark is excellent. Do all the attractions yourself by taxi. The tour operators charge more for the same thing, just because they add in a crummy BBQ.

written by puddleduck2 on 05/07/2005

I discovered Holiday Truths approximately 2 years ago and became a member immediately. There is a wealth of information on there and the discussion forums are excellent for finding out information when planning a holiday - if you want to find out what your chosen resort/hotel is like before you book, look no further. There are hotel and resort reviews and lots of advice from other users who have been. It's incredibly easy to use and it's always the first place I go for advice before booking my holiday.

I've passed details of this site over to loads of friends who have since used it regularly.
