Platanes, May Hotel

May Hotel is a little Gem. We happened upon it by accident as it does not appear in any of the UK Travel brochures or review sites. (find it at www.may.gr)

It is a smallish family run hotel on the outskirts of Platanes (supermarket across the road - main shops and restaurants 1mins walk), around 5km from Rethymnon (5 mins by taxi). The owners Nikos & Maria are lovely and will go out of their way to make sure you are having a good holiday as well as recommending places of interest in the area, car hire, etc). The room we had was on the small side but well equiped (inc. dressing table, TV, Fridge, Safe, Balcolny, bath with shower &Air Con) spotlessly clean and perfectly adequate for our purposes. The reception and bar areas are spacious (marble throughout) and there is also a terrace area outside. The main pool is large with a smaller, separate, children's pool both surrounded by grassy sunbathing areas and plenty of sunbeds - no matter when we arrived at the pool, there were always plenty to go round (other hotels please take note!!). This could, of course, have had something to do with the fact that the hotel is so close to the beach - just a couple of minutes walk down the shortcut beside the hotel. There is also a poolside bar offering drinks and snacks throughout the day - Don't miss the weekly bar-b-que, it was excellent! For those taking the half board option, the hotel restaurant offers the usual selection of soup/salads/hot mains & desserts, but Platanes itself has a fantastic selection of restautants and cafes to suit all tastes and budgets.

All in all the hotel offered excellent value for money and we would heartily recommend it.
