Fantastic Finish

Amazing standards

Amazing customer service from start to finish. We had a new staircase fitted and he is the best tradesman we have ever seen. The attention to detail and commitment to the job and company was first class. We are so happy with our new staircase. It’s top end, premium and could easily be ruined by a bad fitter. He was an experienced craftsmen and the finished product is top end and premium. Thanks Neville Johnson.

Beware The Lack Of After Care

Beware the lack of after care. Some years ago I purchased a large and expensive library/office and I was extremely pleased with it. Just recently I realised I needed an extra shelf, but the company told me they no longer stocked the same style. I sent pictures and measurements and said I'd be happy with the closest they could get. But then they said they couldn't help me and would not provide a single shelf. Thanks very much Neville Johnson - happy to take all the money at the time and then provide zero after care. Very poor.

Exceptional Quality And Professional Service

Having my new staircase designed and fitted has been the best thing I have done for my little cottage. I have a 17th century cottage and at the beginning of the year I commissioned Neville Johnson to design and fit it. Owning an old building and having work done is always stressful. Nothing is straight or square. However having Neville Johnson to undertake the work has been the best decision I have ever made. From the initial consultation, to the design to the final fitting, I could not be more pleased. The company were efficient, knowledgeable and so accommodating. I ended up with a beautiful design. I had ideas, but speaking to a professional design consultant meant those ideas were enhanced and brought to reality. Actual fitting was faultless. wonky walls proved no issue. I am so thrilled with my staircase, its beautiful and incredibly well made. I can find no fault at all. My fitter even made sure the stain colour on my staircase matched the 17th century beams in my cottage

The service from this company seems like a lottery - there are 5* reviews but there really should be not on 1*.

Over Priced And Poor Quality

Over priced and poor quality. Does not match up to their statement of ‘luxury’. Oak posts arrived damaged and unvarnished and I was left with damaged skirting boards and a number of unnecessary gaps and holes. I then had to take time off work for the two days remedial work. The time allocated for the job was grossly underestimated. I would NOT recommend this company.

I Really Wanted To Give Them 5 Stars

I really, really wanted to write a review giving Neville Johnson 5 stars, but if I am honest, I can only give them 1 star.

Let me tell you about the ongoing saga..

My wife and I decided in January this year to treat ourselves to a fitted study –a wall to wall bookcase with an adjoining desk.

We had seen the impressive Neville Johnson commercials and read the reviews. We knew they were expensive, but we were prepared to pay the extra for the quality.

Right from the start I was impressed by Neville Johnson. They sent out a designer, he was very professional. He listened to our ideas and worked with us in producing a design we were happy with. We met him a couple of times, our ideas on the design and finish changed several times. Nothing seemed too much trouble for him and he patiently worked with us until we got it right.

Next came the detail drawings of the design. Again we were very impressed and it reassured us that we were dealing with a professional company with high standards.

We had a visit from a surveyor, who answered all our questions. Again a very impressive service.

I was at work while the fitters fitted the furniture and my wife dealt with them.

When I returned home, the fitters had already completed the work and gone.

We had ordered blue fitted study furniture. I noticed straight away that on the base of the fitted desk the factory painted laminated wood had been chipped off revealing the chip board underneath. The size of the laminated wood that had chipped off was 6 inches by 2 inches. So quite large. The fitters had tried to cover this up with hand painting the chipboard to blend it in. Basically a botch job.

The fitters had then managed to splash the blue paint onto a newly painted magnolia wall on the opposite side of the room.

On the design, the gap between the top of the book case and the ceiling is filled with a panel called the “infill”, in the design drawing, this was to be flush with the bookcase. The fitters had failed to follow the design and to fit this flush with the book case, instead installing it so far back it gave me a four inch ledge on top of the bookcase.

When I complained ,I was contacted the very next day by the Field Installation Manager to discuss how the installation had gone.

He came up to see us straight away.

What I expected was for someone to say “This is not our standard, I really apologise for this and we will put it right straight away”

What I got was not a word of apology, but a chain of excuses about the fitters wife being ill and bags and bags of B.S.

Some of the excuses didn’t even make sense. At one point he actually said “Maybe the floor is on a slope and the fitters had to make alterations on the fly and that’s why they had to put in extra chip board beneath the desk.”

Your company sent designers , surveyors, made detailed drawings and are charging top whack. Are you really telling me your fitters had then to start altering factor made, hand crafted furniture on the fly ?

Look again. It’s not extra chipboard beneath the desk, it’s clearly a veneer that has peeled off. Lets be honest, some where in either transportation or in the fitting the furniture got damaged. Instead of your fitters replacing it or owning up, they tried to cover it up with a botch job, managed to splash paint every where and failed to follow the detailed drawings they were given.

Incidentally the study floor is not on a slope.

There was not a word of apology or shock at the standard of the fitting from them, though he did say that they would replace this asap.

I did also ask why there were eye watering toxic fumes coming for the furniture. He replied that it was probably rushed out of the factory too some after it had been sprayed. I must admit the eye watering fumes going from the furniture began to relent after several days.

I believe his background is in double glazing…it shows.

I have heard nothing since the meeting

I spoke to the Finance Company and they confirmed that they had paid Neville Johnson in full four days after my complaint, because Neville Johnson had confirmed that the furniture was fitted to the customers satisfaction.

I have now logged a complaint with the finance company to take up with Neville Johnson.

At present the saga is on going and not resolved, I have been given no date for resolution.

The sign of an excellent company and its product is not just the product but the service that goes with it.

Would I recommend Neville Johnson …… What do you think?

Agree. I was thinking of buying a fitted book cabinet from them, not after this review. I live in a period property, so yes, the floors will be on a slope. I can only imagine what headache they might put me through—paying money for the privilege of being messed around- no thanks.

Had been thinking of getting NJ around but not now. There are 5* reviews but there ought to be no 1* reviews whatsoever. Can't take a chance - seems a lottery.

Dreadful Experience, Poor Quality Product, Terrible Service

Dreadful experience, poor quality product, terrible service and overpriced

I would give zero stars to Neville Johnson if Trustpilot allowed this.

In summary, we obtained a refund for most of the money paid for bedroom furniture two years after signing the order, this was after:

- three attempts by NJ at supplying and installing an acceptable product to the agreed design

- three sets of very poor quality wardrobes, the first was way off the agreed design

- three "FAILED FURNITURE INSTALLATION MANAGER'S REPORT" (yes - that really is the title of the reports issued to us by NJ!)

- several visits to our home from various NJ management

- threats from NJ's credit control staff and solicitors for legal action for the balance of 20% which they said was due on "installation completion" (i.e. it doesn't matter how bad the installation is, if NJ say it is complete then they demand all their money)

- Statements from NJ senior management such as "NJ can only supply our usual products from our usual materials. We use the term "to a showroom standard"..."; this was a bizarre claim since they do not have showrooms for bedroom furniture!

- Formal request to cancel the contract under the Consumer Rights (2015) Act was completely ignored by NJ

- Legal action by me through solicitors which took over a year of exchanges between solicitors. The NJ tactic was procrastination and intransigence.

- Eventually when court papers were served on NJ they started making more than token offers of compensation but carried on claiming the furniture supplied was "...fully compliant with the contract..."

- They upped their offer for a settlement; I would have liked to have seen them in court but in view of the emotional strain that would have caused, we finally accepted a settlement offer from NJ without going to court.

MY ADVICE IS THINK VERY CAREFULLY BEFORE SIGNING A CONTRACT WITH NEVILLE JOHNSON LTD - MY WIFE AND I WISH WE HAD NEVER HEARD OF THIS COMPANY!

Very Poor Service And Quality

Very unprofessional service and poor quality. After spending £55k with them, I’m very disappointed and wasted my money. Furniture supposed to be fitted in January but still not completed. They damaged the furniture while fitting them and some furniture came with damages on it. Contacted their area manager and the head office to complain and still no action in place. I have no idea when they will complete my furniture as they have not given a date yet. Every time they send different fitters which is really annoying because they don’t perform at the same standard. The reason why I chose Neville Johnson was to have peace of mind but they are a nightmare. Very poor service and quality. Would not recommend Neville Johnson. They are just big for their name.

Good heavens, I am appalled at what I have just read.

I have just had a similar awful service from Hammonds, it would take far too long to document on here, so I thought I would check out reviews on NJ as I need another bedroom fitted out.

But I am wondering if NJ is now a bad idea.

Can anyone recommend some who does a good job ?

No wonder we buy German goods.

LexingtonMtolo

We've had the same. The "ladies" in the office are obnoxious. Salesman refused to give me the name of the MD for me to complain. Dreadful organisation, avoid like the plague

Q&A

Mads1976

Is it ok to have my carpet laid before Neville Johnson polisher/sprayer comes to finish job?

magscam

I am considering a new staircase, Do Neville Johnson do an efficient job? Can we have a clue about the cost please?

Heathercallaghan

Can anyone advise what they were charged for a staircase and also a fitted bedroom? I want to know roughly what to expect before the designer comes out and quotes me.

andrewwebster1

I am considering placing an order for a Neville Johnson staircase. On their quote, they are requesting a 35% deposit with the order, 45% at survey and 20% balance on completion. Is this normal? Usually, I would expect to pay a deposit and balance on completion.

Neville Johnson customers please advise?

Many thanks.

Banacek57

Hi, I had a staircase installed beginning of 2014 and all you are requested to pay us a 35% deposit with the final payment on completion. You do have the option to defer the final payment for 12 months if finances are ever an issue. Hope that helps.
