This device rivals the iPod. It may not have a funky design but it includes functionality iPods don't have, like voice recorder and radio.

I plan to be rid of this player as soon as possible, I brought it to replace an Archos Jukebox recorder 10 which even though it was bigger was far superior as standard but with the Rockbox operating system was even better. The only thing I can see making this device better is if Rockbox manage to port their OS to it or Samsung decide to write some firmware to improve the useability.
All in all I consider this purchase a waste of money.

It would have been a fantastic device if it worked, but the software just bugs you and you can't fix it. I would rather throw my money in a drain and at least save the hassle of spending 3 days working with the Samsung YH-920 GS MP3 player (without success). It is going back to the shop (one-way ticket).

written by stroberts on 20/06/2006

When I got this Samsung YH-920 GS player it was very good, and reasonably priced. I didn't find the software difficult as it wasn't Napster - it was the Yepp's own programme. Then the firmware developed a fault after around 7 months. The amount of time it took to get the player repaired was so shocking I'm looking to replace it. It was actually sent back to me with the same fault I sent it away with.

Also switching to Napster really annoyed me, especially since they didn't tell me. The old programme was much better. The problems I encountered may have been unlucky, but there are still much better players for a similar price.

Generally unimpressed

Although it is a massive storage device the Samsung YH-920 GS is hard to put music onto it and the battery life is about 3 hours max. There are better mp3 players available and for that reason i would strongly recommend that you do not buy the Samsung YH-920.

written by psychohove on 11/03/2006

After updating the firmware and drivers from Samsung (easy to find), my Samsung YH-920 GS MP3 player often freezes when I try to connect to the PC. I recommend not charging when you connect as this reduces the crashes.

After resetting the YH-920 you have to wait about 5 minutes before you try to switch back on, or you will get no screen and you have to redo the reset procedure.

Because you have to connect to the PC to install music, this made the whole process unbearable, to the degree that you will never ever use the 20Gb that you are given!

“I have a PC, and can use it for fairly basic functions...”

★★★★★

written by leven1 on 20/09/2005

I have a PC, and can use it for fairly basic functions (writing letters etc...) but I am not very technically minded, and when I read a load of specifications etc... about a product, a lot of them go over my head. (I genuinely had no idea what ripping and synching were 5 days ago)! So when my wife got me a Sumsung YH-920 MP3 player for my birthday, I was a little apprehensive about how it worked. I had a check on the internet and read many terrible reviews of the product. Reviews from people who were "computer literate" and found this awful, and useless, and unusable. This really got me worried, and I thought that I had got a real turkey of a player, and that with my limited knowledge I may not be able to use it at all.

When I started to use it I took note of what the reviews had said and didn't even attempt to use the Napster software. I had no real desire to download music from Napster anyway. I was much more interested in putting my CD collection on it. Despite my lack of technical knowledge, I have to say I found this very very easy to do.

I upgraded my Windows Media Player from version 9 to version 10, and started ripping Cd's into my PC. I had never done this before, but WMP 10 made this very easy, and I experienced no problems. I am happy to say that I also had no problems synching the music from my PC to the YH-920. As I did not previously have any Cd's on my PC, I started off doing a batch of around 20 Cd's, ripping them and then synching them. In WMP 10's library there is a Sync panel on the right hand side. This can be expanded by dragging it over. Then it was as easy as dragging an album title (or an artist, then ALL their albums get copied over) from the library into the Sync panel. Once I had many albums ready to be synched, I clicked the sync tab and was given a list of everything ready to be synched. Then it was as easy as clicking start sync, and everything was copied onto the YH-920.

I now have over 100 albums on my unit (I'm putting on albums as fast as family life will allow), and I still have over 10GB free! The player itself is easy to use, although it is slightly annoying that you can't play an album in the correct order unless you go in through artist first, then album. Any album with various artists can be annoying, as it lists each artist individually, even though you may only have one song by them on the player. You can still listen to the album, but because you can't go into artist first, you have to listen to it alphabetically! But other than these very minor complaints, it has been a joy to use, and I now wonder how I survived so long without an MP3 player.

Initially I was put off by the many bad reviews I read about this machine. Most of these problems seem to come from trying to use the Napster software. I would advise not to do this, and use WMP 10 (although I read WMP 9 also works) to get your MP3's onto the player. I have read a couple of people saying that WMP 10 would not work with this machine. I can't say why this happened to these people, but my own experience is completely different, and WMP 10 is working perfectly for me. One other thing emerged when investigating the YH-920 over the internet, and that was when I check only UK sites, the majority of reviews were bad, but on checking US sites, this player gets very very good reviews. I'm sorry so many people have had difficulties, because from my experiences this is a very good player with a large memory.

I bought Samsung YH-920 GS MP3 player, as other Samsung products I have bought in the past have been very good. This is definitely the exception.

The biggest problem is that the Yepp software is incompatible with WMP10. It tells you to remove v10 and install v9, which isn't possible since Microsoft have stopped publishing it for XP!

I failed to get the player working, even after going to the Yepp website - which unfortunately is in Korean...

Prognosis - Not good!

You can roll back wmp 10 to wmp 9 by going to control panel-uninstall software-wmp10 (in windows updates). Once you do that, go to Samsung's download centre and download the wmp10 patch and then reinstall wmp10. Its working for me now but the major problem I find with the player is that there is a lot of noise produced through the earphones when the hard drive in spinning hard

“Samsung YH-920GS Portable MP3 Player. ”

★☆☆☆☆

written by bumfluff on 23/08/2005

Samsung YH-920GS Portable MP3 Player.

I am currently trying to use the recovery utility because of a problem with firmware! While I was listening to it, it suddenly stopped, and the recovery utility programme doesn't work. This is my third MP3 player, and I don't think I'm having much success with them. I found that while I was using the Samsung YH920, I wasn't able to make play lists, there were big delays while songs were changing while on random, and it ran out of battery power within 2 hours of usage, which is appalling, especially as it is meant to last at least 8 hours. The controls are also quite annoying, especially when trying to save or look for a radio station. Loading up songs onto the player also took a long time, and you have to upload the songs into the library first, before you download the songs onto the actual device.
All in all I don't recommend this MP3 player much at all, as it has caused me so many problems in the short time I've had it, and now I am thinking of selling it and buying a more reliable Iriver H10.

“On the good side the Samsung YH-920 GS has useful...”

★★☆☆☆

written by MikeHS001 on 10/08/2005

On the good side the Samsung YH-920 GS has useful features as listed above, good heft and feel and comes with a good set of kit as standard (leather case, remote control, dock etc). It can work as an external HDD via USB, and record voice to MP3 via a built in mike at reasonable quality.

Not so good points:-

1 - Can only import music files from Napster using the software provided. If you want to import your CD collection you have to use a 3rd party encoder (Audiograbber works well)

2 - The software in general is not intuitive and very easy to get in a mess. I am fairly computer literate but it took me hours of messing around to get the whole process of importing CDs working smoothly. The user guide is basic and not well written and the online help files no better. Compared with my partner's iPod it is a nightmare.

3 - Once I mastered the process of getting the music onto the player in meaningful categories, the next discovery was that when you search for music by genre, it goes straight from the specific genre ( e.g. Trance) to a list of all tracks in the genre in alphabetical order, without the intermediate step of albums. With over 30 albums in some genres this is over 370 tracks. Horror story.

4 - Having got an album onto the player you can then delete the tracks from the album but not the album title, this can only be done by formatting the entire disk and reloading all the albums one by one. This is assuming that you haven't accidentally deleted your album list which is easy to do. Compared with the one click operation of synching libraries in the iPod this is ridiculous. Has no one at Samsung ever wondered why the iPod is so popular? Doesn't look like it.

5 - What the computer software says is on the player isn't necessarily what is on the player, there seems to be differences between the computer software and player firmware. You'd think they would have spotted somathing as basic as this in testing.

6 - It's prone to occasional stops and restarts and if there is a logic to this it certainly escapes me.

7 - On the Uk website the spec includes a built in FM radio, but doesn't mention that the European variant doesn't include this.

I would have taken it back after the first day had I not needed it as a voice recorder over the following few days and had to leave the country later.

Samsung have missed a real opportunity. With decent, well thought out software and proper product development and user testing this could have been a real iPod alternative. As it is the slapdash and apparently thought free implementation of this product is a sad departure from Samsung's usual high standards, and no-one at Apple or Creative Labs will be losing any sleep over it.

This is the worse product I have ever purchased! First, there is NO reference to the fact that you are REQUIRED to subscribe to napster. Then the product fails to turn off when you press the off button. Finally, it randomly turns itself off.

Additional details are, that I had this for less than a day before I promptly returned it to the store and purchased another product..the RIO. Easy to use, drop and drag and less money. Samsung is usually such a good product, I don't know how they got this so wrong.

written by expert on 02/08/2005

I don't have this specific Portable MP3 Player, I have the Samsung YH-820 which is the smaller version. Therefore I cannot comment on the actual unit itself. However they both run on the same software which is awful. It is imposible to use, and unlike any other music program. Mot of the time it claims to have transfered music to the device but hasn't, and all of my music had to be first loaded onto windows media player, then synced, then put onto the mp3 player. If you are considering buying an mp3 hard drive from samsung DONT. I had mine for a day and couldnt get more than two albums on, and spent hours trying to get it to work, and i'm reasonably computer literate, God knows how anyone who isn't would even think about operating this bad mp3 player. Just get an ipod, they're popular for a reason. They might be a bit more expensive but at least itunes actually works and can be used by non computer geeks.
