This is Daewoo's 40GB DVD player/HHD recorder. I have purchased it for use in the UK but it appears that this is really meant for the mainland European market.
The product works fine out of the box. You get all the great functionality that you'd expect from any HDD recorder whilst watching LIVE TV. And the DVD player works just fine and dandy.
So, the LIVE TV functionality starts to whet your apetite and you're ready to move on to more advanced functionality, logically you look at timer recording. Ah, here's the snag, it doesn't appear to work with Sky digiboxes!!
The DHD4000D has an IR/CBC cable (like the TIVO) to switch channels at the correct time when doing a timer record. However, it appears that i'ts only set-up to work with analogue sky boxes. So what happens on a timer record is that the it will start recording at the correct time but not switch channels. Whatever you were last watching on Sky will be recorded!!
Totally defeats the reason why I bought this and a total waste of money for me!!
I have contacted Daewoo and they are looking into it, if I get a response I'll post this forum, but don't hold your breath!
Got exactly the same problem, but this time recording from Virgin Cable instead of Sky.
The ability to train the Daewoo unit to learn the remote commands for the video source is sorely lacking!
Great tip on the PhantomPlus though - I will have to invest in one.
I also have another problem recording on the Daewoo - when the recording starts, the TV sound is cut off. It's also missing from the recording.
NEWSFLASH !
Although I initially has issues with this product, I have found a workaround for automatically recording programmes whilst I am out.
I have recently found the 'PhantomPlus'. It's a cool piece of kit that will automatically 'tell' your recorder when to start recording the programmes in your Sky personal planner.
You teach it the remote control commands for your recorder and it then does everything else - my setup is now like a crude version of Sky+, except a lot cheaper!
