I am extremely unhappy with my Treo 600 as it became unusable as a phone after <6 months due to failure of mixc and speaker in normal mode.
Handspring/Palm told me to go to Orange (supplier), Orange told me to go to Handspring.
Warranty is therefore a sick joke!
I still pay Orange my monthly contract for a useless phone.
My advice is simple do not buy any Handspring products if you want reliability and do not go to Orange if you expect back up!

“The Handspring Treo 600 is a horrible phone! ”

    ★★★☆☆

    written by janvekemans on 31/08/2004

The Handspring Treo 600 is a horrible phone!
Each time GPRS data call is being put in I'm unavailable on the phone.
Needs reboot at least 3 times a day (compared to my previous (Nokia 9210i).
Copying data between PDA and Phone seriously hampered by size of copy buffer and the restrictive way in which Palm works.
Search only conveniently possible on name and given name, no easy search all capability restricted to address book.
No multiple day appointments and several other restrictions in datebook.
Even Snappermail is "will do" at best, included mailclient is atrocious.

“I came from the Nokia 9200 Communicator. I fell in...”

    ★★★★☆

    written by CharlieBrown on 20/07/2004

I came from the Nokia 9200 Communicator. I fell in love with the keyboard and the Web/Email/Office suite/PDA on a phone. I would have been an Ericsson R380e user but the merger with Sony killed it. However, the Nokia Communicator requires that you have a flat surface to use it efficiently.

From there, I tried to search for the same experience but on a smaller form factor. First came the Treo 270. GPRS. Thumboard. PDA. PDA-size. I can actually take notes without requiring a flat surface.

One year later, the Treo 600 was the form factor. Continued my experience with an Office suite/PDA environment/Web/Email/GPRS. Plus digital camera. SD slot that holds my files and MP3 collection. And the numerous applications and e-books.

As a phone, it did not disappoint me. Easy to look for contacts in a few keystrokes using the thumboard. Don't have so many close contacts so 50 favorite contacts is more than enough. I use the first page of favorites for often-used apps.

SMS and Email are a brisk with the thumboard.

5-way navigation makes it a lot easier to use the Treo.

I can send SMS or call someone from Contacts. Or get the Contacts up to 10 recipients in SMS. MMS is seamlessly supported by my carrier.

Ringtones are wonderful. I converted some of my MP3 to MIDI and transferred them to the phone as ringtones.

It is sturdy, having dropped it on concrete floors at times when pulling it out of my holster.

Battery lasts me 2 days before recharging on the 3rd day.

“Just to put my cards on the table, I am a huge Palm...”

    ★★★★★

    written by REByers on 12/07/2004

Just to put my cards on the table, I am a huge Palm fan, and have used them for 6 years. When my mobile phone contract came up for renewal I was also looking for my next palm. The Handspring Treo 600 seemed a great way to do both and to save some money (as Orange effectively paid for my new palm).

7 months on and I am still very happy with the device. Build quality is good and the keyboard surprisingly usefull (I have big fingers).

Don't bother with the camera, it is beyond poor, but as a phone/PDA hydrid this is a great device.

The major downfall (for me) is the lack of bluetooth. As I travel alot I have to keep putting my sim into my trusty 6310i for the car cradle. If the Treo had bluetooth I could just upgrade my car kit to a generic bluetooth one. I refuse to pay out silly money for a car kit that will only suit the treo.

“Upgraded my treo 600 in December (orange contract) ”

    ★★★★☆

    written by zj on 06/06/2004

Upgraded my treo 600 in December (orange contract)
Since then the Handspring Treo 600 mobile phone has been a really useful adjunct to my daily life.
The screen is relatively large and very bright. I find that the lowish resolution gives quite a pixellated appearance to pictures but the icons and screen text are sharp and readable. It's touch sensitive and quite precise but bows alarmingly when pressed (doesn't come to any harm though). I've lost only one pixel in 7 months and the image quality hasn't degraded noticeably.
The phone is easily switched to wireless or silent mode through dedicated buttons. RF performance is much better than my previous Motorola t720 and the voice quality is generally on a par. The speakerphone is located at the back and whilst loud, does tend to distort at any volume above low. The battery life averages around 6 days with voice calls or 4.5 with web surfing. Data functions are easily accessed via 4 dedicated (but customisable) buttons below the screen. I've personally found the 'D-pad' and thumboard pretty good although with use the d pad is becoming a little less accurate. Text entry is quick and accurate (I average 1 error per 35 letters) although not quite in the league of graffiti. There is a stylus tucked neatly into the back. the unit came with a cable charger - I would have appreciated the desktop variant but it's no great loss.
The handspring palm desktop software integrated perfectly with XPHome and has been very stable. Synchronisation is by pressing a single button on the connection cable. Expansion is via a springloaded port on the top of the unit but I've found that my cards seem to project 1 mm above the top of the recess and are easily knocked out - not sure if this is a general problem though.
The palm functions are accessed from the thumboard or in the case of the diary, through a dedicated key. The functionality is, as always, excellent and avant-go has been supplied. I've downloaded a number of palm applications and found integration and function to be seamless.
There is a camera on the back of the unit and the pics when downloaded onto a pc vary from mediocre (indoors/lowlight - blue cast and pixellation ++) to acceptable (outdoors/very bright). The images are generally OK for pic messaging if a little dark. The quality is nowhere near that of more recent sub-megapixel cameraphones but that isn't the USP.
I've found GPRS connections to be fast but a little flaky with a tendency to crash the browser and occasionally the phone OS. On optimised sites the internet experience is Ok (poor screen resolution and format detract somewhat)- non reformattable sites are often hopeless.
SMS and Pic messaging functions are superb. Individual chat threads make it doddle to keep several conversations going simultaneously over the course of a day. Pic messaging is idiot proof - choose recipients:choose pics:choose text +/-sounds:send message

All in all a great little phone/pda that does what it says on the box.

written by ja xx on 29/04/2004

I initially looked to upgrade to the LG7100 mobile phone, but as I looked round, the Handspring Treo 600 took my fancy. Not bad for £60. Plus out of the 1500 people who upgraded through work (like myself) there were only 35 people who got the Treo. Working in the mobile telecoms industry, this phone has proved beoyond a doubt to be brilliant. I must admit though, the camera is a bit lacklustre and the screen could do with 64k, but I can live with that. I did also find a Bluetooth device fot the Treo, but it's only for voice calls.

I love the keypad, very easy to use, and I found the menus very easy to navigate. I also upgraded the memory card to 64k instead of the standard 32k you get in the box.

I also find the software for the PC very easy to use, and hotsyncing is a piece of cake!

“I previously owned the Nokia 6600. This was a...”

    written by shuwaz on 25/04/2004

I previously owned the Nokia 6600. This was a blidingly good phone and coudlnt see myself going for anything else. However, my contract was up for renewal and i was offered the Handspring Treo 600 for free (due to my monthly bill). i orignally had the intention of selling the phone and keeping my old one. But after playing around with the Treo 600 i became more and more attached to it by each passing day.

The main thing that attracted me to it was:

    1. full qwerty keyboard - this meant that i could easily send text messages, browse the web and send emails.
    2. touchscreen - the Treo 600 has a setting that allows you to use a on screen numberpad (which can be used to dial numbers) as a wallpaper. I now regularly dial numbers by tappin into the screen, great fun!
    3. Stylus - the stylus meant that i can draw notes and scribbles straight into the phone then email them to friends as Microsoft Word files.
    4. Ease of use - i personally think that Nokias are the easiest menus to use. However, the Treo 600 makes some of the most regular uses of a phone so simple (as mentioned the dialpad wallpaper is just one). Using the speakerphone or looking at text massages and contact lists during a call is a sinch.

Overall i would recommend this phone to the person who looks for a phone that is highly function while willing to compremise on fashion. The Treo 600 is not a fashion phone like the Samsungs and Motorolas. But it is a business phone, and one of the best out there. Well done to Orange for choosing this as one of the phones they sell.

    written by edthegiant on 16/12/2003

I bought this Handspring Treo 600 mobile phone with some trepidation but seemed like a good opportunity to combine palm, telephone and everything else that fills my pockets. Original quote of £199 seemed quite high from Orange direct but with a bit of fiddling about soon got the price down to £19.99 - Interesting point - if you can, get through to Orange Retentions Dept - the prices you will get are set by computer, not by how much the Orange Store Manager thinks he can get out of you, so you will pay a lot less. Palm operating system and set-up are excellent, and the buttons take a little practice, but overall an excellent little machine

    “This phone rox ”

    ★★★★★

    written by robzki on 19/11/2003

    This phone rox
Has just about everything you could need, some review sites say that the camera is useless, I disagree, Its not a 6 megapixel cam, but for a phone/cam it does the job and is a nice extra.
They also say the 160x160 screen is poor, again I find it has excellent quality and has been built this way to save on battery, and as it stands, up to 10 days on standby is more of a plus when considering a phone than the screen resolution
In summary this phone is well built, has an ever expanding range of third party software, has just about every feature you could need while out and about, with the only downside being the lack of bluetooth

search for the best price tho, I got mine on an upgrade deal from orange uk for £19.99 after being with them a year and came bundled with usb hotsync cable and a 32mb mmc but have seen it advertised for as much as 799 euros
