Not The Best Depiction Of Alexander The Great
I found this movie years ago when I was interested in Alexander the Great. So I bought this movie and for about the first hour I really liked it. Then the movie started to become very boring for me. It just felt like people yelling at one another for some reason that I didn't care about. I was also very disappointed that they only included two of Alexander the Greats battles in the movie, the Battle of Gaugamela and the Battle of the Hydaspes River. It's not a horrible movie, but still not the greatest.
First of all, there is the question of historical accuracy with this film as many other films like it. I personally don't know a lot about Alexander the Great anymore so I can't really compare it.
There are good things about this movie though. First of all, the performances aren't terrible. They are actually good performances from all of the actors. It's just it feels wasted when the majority of the film is the characters yelling at each other. Then there's the phenomenal music. The music feels like something that fits someone like Alexander the Great. It's Oscar worthy. Then finally there is the highlight of the film, the Battle of Gaugamela. Without a doubt, this is the best part of the movie. This battle seems like one of the most accurate portrayals of Ancient warfare between Greeks and Persians. It is a little on the short side, but luckily it is easily re-watchable. The amount of blood you see might bother some people, but other than that, it's still amazing to watch.
All in all though, Alexander is an average portrayal of an amazing person from history. It falls flat in some areas in terms of story, but makes up for it with the amazing soundtrack and the well done battle scenes, even though there's only two of them.
