“Main issue is the router supplied by Tesco”

★★★☆☆

written by tonyfrombroadmoor on 14/04/2012

Have read most of the reviews on here and can recognise a lot of the problems. Slow speeds, frequent outages, the need to reboot, etc. About a week ago I decided to ditch the Thomson router supplied Tesco and start using my trusty old Netgear router (which was originally supplied by Sky Broadband). Rang Tesco, got my username and password, removed the Sky firmare from the router by flashing a newer version from Netgear's website, and I was good to go. Since then, I've not had any issues. The service is as reliable as the one I was getting from Sky. I cannot believe Tesco would choose such a cheap router. Tight F**kers!

“Tesco.net - a warning”

★★★☆☆

written by vatman40 on 03/08/2011

Tesco broadband is suffering major technical issues such that you either can't access email accounts due to am 'unrecognised error returned from email server' or, if you are successful, you can wait literally minutes for an email message to open. Have not been able to access emails for 3 days - ecah day complained to Tesco and received automated response telling me how to make internet connection faster - no problem with internet connection - everything else works as you would expect. Probelms seem to coincide with launch of Tesco bank - have seen posts elsewhere about problems accessing bank accounts on-line. If you are considering Tesco as broadband provider I would think again - you will end-up extremely frustrated and causing serious damage to your health (and possibly furniture, pets, etc.)

Friday 5th August - having a similar problem to the comment above. Internet activated fine, no problems, but NOW I am told that it could be October - November before I can use Outlook to get to my email account. If I had been told this when I signed up, I would have waited until Tesco had everything working.

I asked to be put back to my stand-alond Tesco Broadband, and Talktalk phone....BUT....

I am in the middle of a call, and as it's now classed as a complaint, it has to go to the complaints team on Monday! No indication of whether we are talking about 3 days to go back, 3 weeks or what.

I recommend not moving your account here until Tesco have got on top of their problems.

Yes, have been through the same frustrating situation for the past three days. When the email service came back yesterday my inbox, address book etc were all empty! But at last managed to speak to someone this morning who seemed to know what was going on and they assured me that all the "lost" data would be restored in the next few days. To be fair this is first serious issue I've had with TescoNet.

Changed from tesco.net and also took home phones to broadband. Was not happy on the gove live day as unfortunately it did not actually happen. Spoke to call centre who assured me it would be on first thing next morning, but again it was not. Called the call centre again that evening and it was only when I got irrate that things started to happen. Spoke to a lady who listened to my ranting and said she would do everything she could to get me back on. I asked for calls to my home phone to be transferred to my mobile whilst things were sorted, which they arranged very quickly for me. Eventually when 'live' on Wednesday (should have been Monday) so was without internet for a while. Was called to see how things were going and was helped to set up my wireless connections to both pc and laptop which was a real help to me.
Overall was not initally impressed, however they did redeem themselves somewhat by moving quickly to resolve the issue (but only after a rant from me unfortunately) and really helpful in the wireless set up. Speed has been good so far - but only two days in at the moment - fingers crossed for a trouble free continuation.

TESCO BROADBAND - think we paid about £12.99 a month

Switched from BT (see my review on THEIR Business Broadband) and immediately had problems over the date of switch-over - contacting their so-called Customer Service is about as easy as getting in touch with Osama bin Laden - they don't answer emails, either!
The speed was mediocre most of the time except maybe in the middle of the night but it could NEVER be described as more than 'quite good'. There were quite often failures with the service and, as I said, contacting them was worse tham useless - if you ever did manage to get through, they either did not understand your complaint or, more likely, didn't want to.
Can't remember if there was a yearly contract but anyway, after about a year we switched to another supplier, for whom my daughter had worked and have had no problems since.
On the plus side - you do get Tesco points!

written by oldhenry on 15/04/2010

I was with Tesco dial up and then moved to the cheapo Broardband at bow £14.16 month incl (useless )F secure.
The speed at 512 is rubbish for nowadays and it is not possible to use on BBC i player etc.
So I am looking to move to O2 who seem to offer good speeds for bette rprice. My line won't support silly speeds so I need to be realistic. But Tesco rely on inertia which is the most usual force in the world.Tesco are reliable and does not have outage. My wireless connection needs resetting after many hours anyway, so it is down to speed and value.

I pay for 1mbps all i have ever had is 57kb at best and constantly going down + dont bother trying to download anything it either stops or just takes forever,If i had to mark them out of a hundred I'd say they rate about 60/100,reading all the complaints here as made me realise I have to change to another supplier, i will inform them , give them 4 weeks to halt then just cancel payment from my bank.ps my daughter did warn me they where slow and costantly breaking off conection. 02 broadband is offering 8mb for$7.35 per month think i'll try them.

“Have been with Tesco Broadband since the start...”

★★★☆☆

written by on 22/10/2009

Have been with Tesco Broadband since the start (upgraded from dialup)- maybe 10 years- and have had a reliable service throughout- including when moving house. We're on the £17.99 package and always have been. This is pricey in view of current offerings and it is never faster than 512kbps. However, my compamny pays some of the cost and the speed is fine for general internet and email work.We have 3-4 laptops on the system and while not fast- speed is adequate. Reliability is vital for me working from home and Tesco is reliable. We don't do online gaming- iplayer or much video stuff - which is all slow- but not an issue. However, I do think it's about time Tesco reduced it's prices!

Had Tesco Broadband for 4 years with no problems at all. Have recently been shopping around but reading the reviews I will be sticking with what has been reliable - reliability is worth not saving a couple of quid.

Tesco Broadband is reliable. I'm only on half a meg, but that speed is maintained at about 490Mb. You get what you pay for!

written by wooly hat on 23/08/2007

I have been on the uncapped 512Mb option with Tesco Broadband for several years now. Recently I have been concerned that I have been paying over the odds for this service, but I am coming to the conclusion that it is not nearly as poor as I had thought. Reading the many reviews of other ISP's recently, as I have looked for an alternative, probably with a phone bundle, suggests that in this case you get what you pay for, and it may actually be worth staying.

I agree with every word of Wooly hat's recommendation. I also have the same broadband connection as Wooly hat and, after many hours of research, I have come to the same conclusions. Wish I'd read reviews on Tesco before I wasted so much time looking for something faster and cheaper. It does not exist.

“Tesco Broadband is fairly cheap compared to other ISPs...”

★★★★☆

written by yoshimitsu on 05/01/2005

Tesco Broadband is fairly cheap compared to other ISPs out there and there are no download limits. I've heard some people complain that ISPs who promise no limits at a fairly low price have various ways of restricting your speed anyway but certainly not with Tesco. The trouble with Tesco is that while the speed is definitely of broadband standard the connection is not very reliable. Expect to be disconnected on average five times a month. You'll be able to reconnect eventually but after a few hours or so, which can really be annoying if you're downloading or for online gaming.

Also, Tesco like some ISPs out there use what's called a transparent cache. It's basically a local proxy. This works by Tesco storing webpages on it's own server for faster retrieval but this also means webpages are not always up to date and not very good if you want to use an anonymous proxy.

So, all in all if you don't mind being disconnected a few times a month and looking for a cheap ISP then Tesco is a reasonable choice, but I've cancelled Tesco account and decided to look for a more reliable ISP.
