We Have Just Come Back From 3 Nights In Brussels.

We have just come back from 3 nights in Brussels. Our intention was to visit the Christmas markets and I suppose to get some stocking fillers.

To be honest, I was slightly disappointed. Whilst the festive feeling is spread around the city I found it to be greatly overcrowded and not child friendly at all. Now, having never been to Brussels before I am not sure what I expected, but I know that I expected something more family orientated.

There are two main sections to the market. One of them has an ice-rink and Ferris wheel. (The larger market.) The stalls contain mostly Belgian chocolates (need I say more!!) and various other Belgium specialities. The waffles were delicious too btw.

However, did we buy anything for the stockings? No!! I can't say that there was anything in those stalls that we can not get in the Xmas markets that we have in November & December in the UK.

One thing that I found most frustrating is that prices are not displayed very well and because we couldn't speak French or Flemish, I felt that I had no idea what I was buying and for how much, until I got the change in my hand.

On Saturday night, we decided to go out and look at the lights. I have never felt so unsafe for my daughter. She was pushed and barged and ended up in tears. She eventually went on our shoulders and that is where she stayed until we went back to the hotel.

We stayed at the Radisson SAS Hotel Royal (5*). It is about a 5 minute walk from Grand Place and a lovely hotel if you do not have kids. There is nowhere to take them for a relaxed meal. Very formal. However, we did get a babysitter on Sunday night and she was brilliant!

Would we go back? Yes, probably, but with someone who speaks French and without the children.

I agree with most of the comments here. I went to the Brussels market with 2 young children and they had a great time. The key for us was to stay away from the Saturday night light show. The show is on most nights so go mid week to miss the crush. I too couldn't find anything worth buying, apart from the chocolate, wine and waffles! Brussels is a lovely city which is formal in its make up. My kids loved the big wheel, the ice skating and quirky rides. Walking through the city you can find some little gem areas of ice skating and we even found a great toy store - it was hard to get me out of it!

Now The Brussels Christmas Markets Are Spread Acro

Now the Brussels Christmas Markets are spread across the old parts of the city, it is almost like taking a tour of the city sights while looking at the stalls.

The only disappointment is the rather underwhelming UNESCO sponsored son-et-lumiere in the Grand Place, which looks strangely empty.
