Harold Schechter, Deranged - Synopsis:
"In May 1925 a kindly old man came to the door of the Budd family home in New York City. A few days later he persuaded Mr. and Mrs. Budd to let him take their adorable little girl Grace to a birthday party. The Budds agreed. They never saw Grace again. For the harmless white-haired visitor to whom they entrusted their child was in reality a monster. Six years later, after a relentless search by a New York detective and nationwide press coverage, the mystery of Grace Budd's disappearance was finally solved - and an unparalleled crime of horror revealed. What Albert Fish did to Grace Budd and perhaps fifteen other young children went beyond every parent's worst nightmare. And he did it in a way that caused experts to pronounce him the most deranged human being they had ever seen".
Harold Schechter's 'Deranged' is the second in a series of books that combine the most gripping aspects of true crime and horror to create a uniquely unsettling reading experience. The book was first published in Great Britain back in 1992 by Warner Books. Schechter has managed to produce a gripping and fascinating book that details all the gruesome facts that surround Fish's life, along with some interesting psychological analysis. The book was clearly very well researched, with some very in-depth information around the life of Fish. The book as a whole is well-written, delivering an all rounded true crime book. The book runs for a total of 306 pages and includes some black & white photo pages.
