“my cavalier 'woody' is only 5 years old and going...”

★★★☆☆

written by on 14/03/2011

my cavalier 'woody' is only 5 years old and going rapidly downhill due to mitral heart valve disease, he can no longer go on long walks which he loved so much - it so sad to see. Although they are gorgeous, loving dogs their health problems are too many and too serious. I wouldn't get another because its so devastating to me and my family seeing him this way.

“We are the second home for our 7-year-old and have had...”

★★★☆☆

We are the second home for our 7-year-old and have had him a year. He's gentle and great with the kids. When the kids are around, he's happy, the kids are happy, and I'm happy.

But I work out of my home, and when the kids aren't around and I need to work a normal work day -- he can get on your nerves. He loves attention. If you leave him to run free, he'll sit there and stare at you, or worse yet whine. If you keep him separated in another part of the house, you can be sure he's sitting there at the doorway just staring and possibly whining.

He also is very under-foot and trying to make a meal in the kitchen can seriously increase your stress level -- face in the fridge, nose in the dishwasher, sitting and begging for food to drop. If you close him off in another room so you can make a meal in peace -- guess what, he sits there and stares and whines.

And with those big pouty eyes, he'll make you feel guilty that you're not letting him sit in your lap or petting him all day.

He's a perfect dog for a retired Grandma or a stay-at-home mom. But if you have an active life, or work at home, my experience with this particular pet is that he'll get on your nerves.

I've had two previous indoor dogs, different breeds, and didn't have these kinds of attention problems.

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel are very sweet dogs, but you have to be aware of their health issues and the fact that you can never let them off of their leash. My girlfriend and I have also found housebreaking to be much tougher than expected.

This are great dogs and I would never be without one but due to their health issues you will have too accept that you will be extremely lucky if your pet lasts for his full life span.
They are happy go lucky dogs who take life in a cheerful mood. Inclined to be slightly disobedient they have the "are you calling me" attitude "oh, sorry didn't hear."

I have had my little ruby cavalier since she was 14 weeks old. She is now nearly 11 in a few weeks. Although she was diagnosed with a severe heart murmur when she was around 5, she has been a very happy wee dog despite her health problems. Tara has recently been put on second course of medication called vetmedin as she developed a cough. I have no children and my husband and i adore her. I notice her getting a bit slower now and dread to think what the next year holds, but what I can say is she has brought so much joy to our lives.
