“I bought this laptop a 1.42GHz ibook G4 to take to...”

written by on 13/03/2011

I bought this laptop a 1.42GHz ibook G4 to take to Iraq for entertainment during an Army tour in 2006. i had been advised that the build quality was superb and the motion sensors would protect the hard drive. Well, after months of being banged around in my Bergan, thrown about in helicopters and operating in the dusty muck of Iraq sand I can say that this laptop is the most rugged and reliable laptop I have ever owned. It was expensive when purchased from apple store (compared to PC laptops) - BUT it is the laptop I am still using to write this, whilst my partners PC laptops bought over the same period lie dead in the attic.
I must confess to be a clumsy, careless bloke - It survived me and still loads and works faster than most PCs I've had to use for work.

“After nearly four fabulous years with my Apple Ibook...”

★★★★☆

written by elmccormack99 on 23/08/2009

After nearly four fabulous years with my Apple Ibook G4 Laptop, I am finally ready to let go of it. However, the ironic thing is that I don't NEED a new computer, I've just come to the blatant realization that it is time for a new one since I use it so often.
Prior to purchasing my Ibook G4 back in 2006 for $1100, I owned two laptop computers. The first one was an HP that I purchased at Best Buy for $600. It lasted 11 months before it was completely inoperable. After that I purchased a Dell for $700 which stopped working properly after a mere five months. I finally came to the ultimate yet blatant realization that computers with Windows operating systems simply were not built to last. My friends and family were having the same problem with their computers, they simply were not lasting.

Back in 2006 I knew nothing about Macs other than the fact that they were double the price of a PC. I did not know anyone who owned one or had ever owned one, but I decided to take a daring move. I was starting college in the fall and decided I wanted an Apple computer for my HS graduation.

My father and I were shocked when we arrived at the Mac Store (then an hour from my house) by the prices. The CHEAPEST computer was the Apple Ibook G4 which I purchased for $1100. This was quite an astonishment because in the PC Realm, $1100 will get you one of the most expensive computers.

I got the basic model. It has a small, 12 inch screen which I find cute, it had a 1.33 GHZ PowerPC Processor and 512 MB of memory. These statistics sound terrible today but three years ago they were fairly impressive. My father and I left feeling somewhat hesitant about spending so much money on a computer we knew nothing about.

FAS% FORWARD 3 YEARS: the computer works JUST AS WELL TODAY as it did the day I bought it. I know that is a difficult claim to comprehend but it is the honest truth. As sppn as my friends checked out my MAC, 4 of them had one within 3 months. All of a sudden, my college computer lab is filled with Apple Desktops as opposed to the usual PC's.

One of the best things about Mac;s that I find is the notion that you CANNOT receive viruses or pop-ups becase those types of things are designedd for PC's/.

The ciomputet travels with considerable ease and displaus a great deal of durability. Over thecourse of my ownership of this item, I have lugged it to school Atlantic City, Maryland, Florida, etc. and there have been NO detrimental effects.

You could purchase a $500 Dell/HP/Toshiba for $600 that will last you a year. Or you can purchase a Mac for $1100 that will last you five years. You do the math.

“Sound and picture quality.”

Sound and picture quality.
Has enough memory for using as a work computer.
The Ibook G4 is a good laptop and you get what you pay for (it's worth the money).
After a while it can get boring and you may want to update to a newer version.
Therefore I well recommend the Apple iBook G4 Laptop.

I got this iBook 2nd hand from CEX Exchange. I did a lot of research on Apple on the CEX web site before I bought the laptop. I got the laptop in July 08. It is practically brand new and only cost £350! Earlier this year I had got an Advent laptop in a sale and it had tons of features of it and was a Vista Premium. Put Vista and Norton together and what do you get? UPDATES! Everytime I switched on the laptop Norton took over like a demon. I could not go on the internet or use the computer because Norton was downloading updates. It would take an hour to load and then I would get an error message saying the the update and had been aborted or the laptop would go spinning into a black hole and I could not shut it down. This kept happening over and over. It was driving me crazy. I have used an apple computer before and I thought if I could just get my hands on a 2nd hand iBook around 300 quid. I fancied the 12". I found it at the Arndale Centre and it was only 30G Hard drive but internet works without constant interruption. It's a 2003 and I updated it on the Apple Web Site and then I could sit down and play with it. It had no office software installed so I downloaded Neo Open Source which has all the office applications for free. It came with the usual Apple Software (garageband/itunes etc). I don't have to worry about hackers, viruses or configuring stuff. I just switch it on and I don't see Norton or those endless balloon pop-ups. It's great for people who want a basic laptop for office and email and itunes and more important do not want the endless pain-in-the-neck updates with internet security. It is 2003 so it might not be for everyone but I think it was worth every penny.

I found this review very helpful because the author's needs matched my own for a laptop, the product was confirmed as best value, and I learned all about the CEX exchange - THANKS!

Bought the Apple iBook G4 since our IT department went and said, if changing make it Mac. Unsure, but hey, its all nearly been good. No more worries on reliability problems. Has one or two things that I have not been able to do like DVD shrink and have not found the same type of thing. This is minor problem. No one trying to steal stuff from your computer. Have even had a virus, but an .exe file which does not work on OSx. Its all good. Not changing. I got the 15.4" wide screen from the Apple store and then went onto the refurbished site and got my one with 39% discount. Saving £700 which was a bargain in itself.

This Apple iBook G4 has been my main portable machine for over a year, and it has been very reliable. Easy to use too. I put extra ram in which helps. I run some pretty heavy duty applications, and it can be a bit slow on these, but not unusable. Also very stable ( i.e it does not crash) I do look after it though.

★★★★★

written by Blade24605 on 09/02/2006

Overall this Apple iBook G4 is a great notebook for the cost. The 12in iBook has outperformed some of the other portables that I have owned. My iBook came packaged w/ 40GB hard drive (which was eaten up by the apps) 24GB available upon initial boot up, 1.33mhz processor, 512k memory and standard Airport Wireless and Bluetooth capabilities. This notebook is small but strong. Not recommended for extreme gaming, but that's what desktop pc's are for right?
OS X Tiger is a bit bloated and eats up hd space. It is strongly recommended that one either takes the time to remove unused apps or upgrade the hd capacity during purchase.
If you are looking for either a strong entry level notebook or looking for something portable for business or education purposes this is a great notebook. If you are looking for a gaming notebook, either upgrade to the Powerbook or go with another brand.
The only qualm that I have with my machine is when it boots up OS X. Boot up is delayed which leaves the user to believe that the machine did not power up or is in sleep. Give it about 20-30 seconds and it comes to life. After removing about 10GB of apps, boot time increased quite drastically. (Again this is due to the OS being bloated). My recommendation for Apple is to ship their notebooks with the OS and its minimal apps loaded, and provide cd's that allow the user to add what apps will be used at a later date.

Thanks for your comments. I like lightweight, small laptops. I've seen others in public places use Apple G4 laptop and they say they have no problem. Thinking of buying one. I hear G5 is coming soon.

The Apple iBook G4 is a great laptop computer, but what it needs is a faster processor! You need more than a 40GB hard drive, or the whole thing clogs up. You also need AT LEAST 1GB of RAM and a whole lot more.

In my opinion the screen is great, and for $1600 you need more than a 32MB video card. That's why I would strongly recommend a PowerBook. Airport is great.

written by bakedbeanqueen on 29/12/2005

I bought my Apple iBook G4 laptop in April 2005, and I adore it. I was quite wary of buying an Apple (admittedly my main motivation was its visual appeal compared to other laptops on the market) having heard that it can take some people a while to adjust to the Apple system. I found no such problems and easily adapted. The "sleep" function is so useful, which means it can be carried around with having to be turned off (good for university students) like Windows does. All the programs are fantastic and work well together. The hot-keys take a while to get used to, but they do not necessarily need to be known.
And once you go Mac, you never go back!

I have an Apple iBook G4 and it is my best computer yet. It has a super fast internet, a load of software installed with the computer. A crystal clear screen. And great graphics. This computer is the best Apple product!
