Summary

The revolutionary design of the Motorola V3 took the phone world by storm - manufactured out of aircraft grade aluminium the phone is in some places impossibly thin and yet the screen is still crisp and all the features that you would expect in a modern mobile are still present.

The Motorola V3 went on to become the biggest selling phone in 2005 but how do you rate it against some of its major competitors. The sleek Nokia 6111 has just been released and is receiving high praise for its stylish design but what do you think? Why not discuss these two phones in this specially created forum.

written by on 22/05/2008

This phone is great for a simple phone but the memory is absolutely rubbish as I can only fit 1 song on which is useless! The memory is a big problem for me as if your song fits most of the memory then you cannot have many photos!
Overall this has worked but I am soooo looking forward to getting a new phone!
Cant wait :-D

“I've had this phone since 07/06 and I've had problems...”

written by keleke on 18/01/2007

I've had this phone since 07/06 and I've had problems with incoming calls since right after the 1st month of owning the phone. The problem is that whenever someone would call my phone it wouldn't ring. The ringer is set on HIGH and still nothing. However, when you go into the phone log it would list the phone call as being received not missed. I only noticed it when the caller would leave me a voice mail and I'd see the VM indicator on the screen. So bizarre. I took it into my provider and they uploaded "updates" . It worked after that but the same problem keeps coming back. I brought it in a couple times and each time reload the update. The only way I can resolve this on my own is by removing the battery for a minute and putting it back in. Has anyone else experienced this problem?

written by townfox on 10/01/2007

I have had my Motorola V3 now for about three years, and has I admit had quite a hard life and gets used quite a bit, it has been dropped several times and has stood up to the punishment very well, when I got mine it was supposedly a limited edition black model! but never was limited edition!! still works OK although the "9" key has developed a fault and find that it has to be pressed quite hard to work also the illumination on that key has ceased to function but I cannot complain about that, as I said previously it has had a hard life. The overall exteral finish of the phone is excellent and still looks practically new although I have always kept it in its case, the phone has to be removed from the case that Motorola supply with phone! of which I find a bit odd, I had to replace the case as lost the first one, I think the phone rang took it out its case and never was able to find it again, so bought new one! lol. I especially like the display screen on this phone, of which I have always found very clear and easy to see details even without having to put on my reading glasses, features of this phone I find quite poor and even though this model is now I believe discontinued I could not I am afraid recommend the V3! Although I would recommend Motorola phones in general, just not the V3. Strange though! I also have a Nokia 6280 of which is my work phone, features are far better than the v3 but I absolutely hate it, especially the slide action and much prefer the flip top of the motorola, I do want to replace the V3 in the near future and will quite likely buy another Motorola and it will have to have a flip top like the v3, but hopefully will have a far better camera than the V3 of which is nothing short of being practically useless! it is that poor.

I had the v3 for about 3 weeks and I hated it. I went for it mainly because of the style side of it, which is REALLY nice. But the features aren't much cop. I found the 'mp3 player' it's supposed to have really bad and the camera was just annoying. I'd say it's pretty good for someone who just likes to talk & text. The price has dropped a lot now to about £60. I do like the colour range they do also. But overall I wouldn't rate this to anyone who likes to use a phone a lot.

written by dave66 on 08/11/2006

I wanted a RAZR V3 and as soon as I first saw the Motorola V3, it looked fantastic. The one I had, however, would deliver text messages, voicemails, etc., days after they were sent, and it wasn't the network, because I went back to my old phone for a few weeks to check and had no problems. Customer services kept telling me to reboot it, like a computer, but the first you knew of a problem was when people called asking if I'd received their message or not.

Eventually, the thing would lock up with the screen on and keyboard off or vice-versa. Everybody I knew who ended up with one of these, we all complained about the awful menu layout as well as the unreliability. When the year was up, I changed provider and got a proper phone. I've had a mobile since 1994 and this was by far the worst I've had. An absolute dog.

This mobile phone is a really gorgeous stunner, but over time its many faults will aggravate you. It has a nice camera I suppose, but it's nothing special. It has okay ringtones, a good loudspeaker and screen quality.

However, it is a shame about the inside of the Motorola V3 mobile phone. The battery is simply awful! You will have many problems with it. The memory is a joke and video capture is only 5 seconds maximum. The battery is the biggest woe however.

I can't wait until I get my Nokia!

“If you are one of those people who prefer to have a...”

★★★☆☆

written by Darth Andy on 23/07/2006

If you are one of those people who prefer to have a separate line in the phonebook for each number or only one number per person, then the address book on the Motorola V3 is just fine (if you don't know lots of people). The phone also comes with a piece of software that lets you backup your contacts to your computer if you like.

If you have more than one number for a contact, or heaven forbid an email address for them as well, you will find the address book to be a pain. Oh, and you can only search your phonebook by the first letter too. The upshot of this is that if you have home, work, mobile and email numbers/addresses for Bill, you have to scroll past all of them to get to Bob.

You can sync with Outlook (for additional cost) if you like, but this just makes it worse, as all your email only contacts will appear on your phone too. I'll just reiterate, to sync with the program, you likely have your contacts on your PC, you need to buy extra software. It was actually easier to export my contacts to Excel and upload them to the free software though, so don't waste your money.

Apart from the address book, it's a great phone. The camera, whilst low on pixels and without a flash, is one of the best I've encountered for adjusting to different lighting conditions. It's got Bluetooth (if you can find the menu), and no end of personalisation can be performed; from text / call alerts to screen layout and button functions. It even makes a little beep every five minutes if you've received a call or message that you haven't noticed yet, although opinion is divided on whether this is or isn't desirable.

Overall, I'd say that if you don't need to sync it with Outlook or the like, it's great. If you do need to connect it with the rest of your life though, make sure you can deal with the stone-age address book. If not for the address book, my overall score for this phone would have been an 8.

written by SwanseaBex on 27/06/2006

When I saw the Motorola V3 mobile phone advertised, I thought "I have got to have that", and I bought a pink one.

When I got it home and tried to bluetooth ringtones and pictures from my old phone, I was really disappointed at the fact I have to delete loads of pictures just to get a ringtone on it. Also, the camera quality is poor.

Overall, I would say if you just want a phone to make calls, but with no other real features, then this is the phone for you, but if you are like me and like a phone with gadgets and like changing ringtones a lot, or if you like to store quite a few pictures on your phone, then I recommend you go for something else!

I've just sold mine, and I am now looking for a new phone.

written by Evejordan on 18/06/2006

I really liked the Motorola V3 mobile phone when it appeared on the market. It looked great, and the screen quality was really good also. However, there are so many annoying things about it that its poor functionality and practicality detracts from its aesthetic qualities. I persevered with it for a year almost, and I hate it now. It's still a lovely phone, and it is hard to beat looks-wise, but it shouldn't come at the expense of usability.

“I originally got the Motorola V3 mobile phone for...”

★★☆☆☆

written by Jean06 on 11/06/2006

I originally got the Motorola V3 mobile phone for Christmas, and I was very much looking forward to using it, although I have previously heard very bad reviews about it, I mainly just wanted a Pink phone.

When I looked through all the features and the basics of what the phone did, I was very disappointed. This phone just doesn't compare to most mobiles that were released at the same time. It really is behind.

The camera for starters is quite simply dreadful, the photo's almost seem to look different in the photo album than when the picture is actually taken. The quality is not good at all, but what do you expect when this phone doesn't even have any Mega-pixels?

The video playback might not even be there, because what's the use of having video playback if you can't record?

One consolation is the look of the phone. It's very fashionable, and because of it's limited edition colours there is a colour quite literally for everyone. I happened to like pink, but I realised when I had it that the colour is actually quite garish.

The graphics are another good point. Motorola phones always have good colourful graphics, especially the pre-installed backgrounds, screensavers and games. Motorola has one over on Nokia here, as many Nokia phones have very bland graphics.

I found the software included in the package quite useful, especially since I could edit photo's and music then upload them to my phone using a USB lead. This was another good feature that probably made me keep the phone for as long as I did, but (and yes there is a but), the memory of the mobile is dreadful. You can't actually upload a whole three minute music track, as it took up a good one-quarter or more of memory, so without expandable memory it's quite useless.

A few months after they released the V3 they probably decided to redeem themselves and they brought out the V3i and the V3X, which are better versions of the V3 with Mega-pixels and expandable memory. I wish I had waited instead of jumping in head first and buying this phone.

After I just couldn't take it anymore I changed networks and I went back to my trustworthy Nokia 6230, which might be a year and a half old, but it is ten times better than the V3.

The V3 might be thin, fashionable and colourful, but this phone would be best left for first timers. If you like your mobiles to sing, dance and tuck you into bed at night then this is not the right phone for you. Don't be swayed by the ever changing line of colours like I was.

I might be getting this phone. My friend has it and i always go on it. You CAN record and playback videos as i have done today, so anyone saying that you can't obviously hasn't looked around the phone to find it. And you can store multiple contacts under one name, as i spent ages looking at the contact list to see if you actually could.

If you want a mobile phone that looks nice, then I would recommend the Motorola Razor, but if you want a phone that actually works properly, I wouldn't. I am now having my phone replaced with a Nokia mobile phone after taking my Razor back to the shop 3 times, ringing up Vodafone and having them suggesting a reconditioned phone, and also having an argument on the phone. Hopefully I will have more luck with my new mobile phone!

“This review is about the regular Motorola RAZR V3...”

★★★☆☆

written by jaybkr on 26/03/2006

This review is about the regular Motorola RAZR V3 mobile phone and not any upgraded versions.

Mine did not have any memory card facility. As of the 15th of March 2006, it is selling for 690 dirhams (that's 187 dollars). I bought the one without a warranty. With a warranty it would have cost around 30 dollars more. I have owned many phones and never had a free or paid service, so I did not find any use for the warranty. These things don't go wrong if you don't break them, and if you break it, it's not covered anyway. In any case, mobile repair shops are a dime a dozen now.

Good things first.

For a flip phone, the Razr's design is fantastic. You can't improve the style anymore. Perfect for a male. It's okay for a lady too. It is the right size. I had the black one and it really looks sexy. The display and ringtones are superb. There is no need for anymore downloads. No radio. Thank god. I'm tired of radio's in my home, car and even supermarkets. The display looks really nice. Other than the design the display was the thing that I liked most. Photo's are so so, but that's okay. It isn't a very expensive phone anyway. 60 seconds per clip Video recording, good sound, so-so picture quality. I do not agree with some people who say that a phone should not be rated for its camera, because there are many non-camera and non-video camera moments that could be captured if you have a reasonably good camera on your phone. (I don't hold the same flexibility when it comes to a radio, because I think it's a big useless waste of money in a phone. The reception is taken for granted in all major brands and I have no complaints on that. The loudspeaker is great. Clear and really loud. Much more than my 6230. Battery was okay. Bluetooth will switch off after 60 seconds automatically. The shop guy said that it can be programmed for more, but I didn't bother to see whether that is really possible.

Now for some drubbing.

I was in a 'fashion' mood when I bought it, but that changed to 'Usefulness mood' in about a weeks time after my purchase of the Motorola Razr. I was secretly craving for my 6230. I felt so bad that I pawned that and paid about a $50 more and got this Razr. Finally, I gave the Razr to a friend who was in the 'Fashion mood' like me about a week back, and got almost the same money that I paid for it when I bought it new. This is not to mean that the Razr is not good. It just did not suit me. To be fair, I should not be comparing a clamshell with a candybar. Clamshells have a certain style (candy bars too). If you are a clamshell fan it's fine. I found it quite a bother to open it to answer and to make a call each day (about 30 times). I like the candybars simplicity.

Talking of simplicity; that's what many non-Nokia phones lack. Nokia's genius is in simplicity. Any fool can be complicated. Even the simplest task of deleting a contact from the RAZR V3 phone book is a mess. 2 presses in two buttons then 2 or 3 downward movements to accomplish the mission of deleting ONE contact! I was scared of adding names to the phonebook; considering the fact that if one day I have to gift or sell it, I would be spending a couple of hours on deleting alone. With most Nokia's it wouldn't take 30 seconds. Not to speak of the camera and organizer etc. They are all there, but they are all complicated. Setting a reminder on a particular date would take about a minute or more. With my Nokia it would take 20 - 30 seconds. I have started writing more in my dairy (the paper version - the ones that you keep in your desk and open. You can write using a pen or pencil on stuff called paper). Even the words on a Razr are deliberately made to sound needlessly geekish. Example: Calendar is called Datebook. Nothing terribly wrong, but just an example of how they twist simple things. Like some American words ("Tire" for Tyre. I'm not sure what they would say to mean "I'm tired" - Probably "I'm tyred"! Looking different is the issue you see). Almost all functions are there, but almost all with a few more button presses than a Nokia. To get to my one minute video recorder, I would take about the same time if I were to take my JVC video camera from its pouch in my car. The only problem is I can't carry the JVC in my shirt pocket.

I have felt that Samsung rates better than Nokia in Inch to Inch, Dirham to Dirham (Well, that's currency), build quality and finish. What the major competitors to Nokia vz, Samsung, Motorola and Sony Ericsson should emulate is the simplicity, if they want to be number 1.

Overall, I would rate RAZR a good phone that's not good for me. I had done my research and read many reviews on the Razr. One thing that one guy wrote, I will quote here "it's a nice phone until you start using it". It wasn't that bad. But I'm sure he's used only Nokia's. A Razr is good for you if you like a well built flip phone. If you are on a low budget, like good ringtones and display, and are not keen on appointments and more such features.

Please feel free to leave any comments.

written by Kreg on 11/03/2006

The Motorola V3 mobile phone is a lot like a supermodel. It looks simply stunning but that's about it.

The memory is not the biggest. The CD that you're given only works on a few PC's as the software can cause problems with Windows. That's if it wants to install! The battery likes to toy with you. It will appear to be full, then after one 2 minute call will fall to one cell, then ten minutes later it will seem to of drawn voltage from the air and charged itself. Don't be fooled, its all an illusion. Before you know it you're back to empty.

I would not recommend this phone as there are so many other issues which would bore you rotten. However, like dating a supermodel, at least you can say you've tried it!

Having also had several Nokia and two Sony mobile phones (all on the same network), I seem now to be getting 'missed call' messages all the time with my Motorola V3. Even sitting at my desk in a strong signal area, the phone will bleep to tell me I've missed a call. I'm not sure if this is a Motorola software issue, but I get this far, far more than I ever did with my other phones.
