“Pretty Pattern”

★★★★☆

written by Chriswatkins78 on 04/10/2021

I was in Milton Keynes for a meeting on Saturday sothought I’d drop by David Lloyd’s after. I went to get some food and a coffee to relieve the stress. I wasn’t treated great as the girl on the till came across aggressive and shouted instead of spoke. She had mousy hair in a ponytail if I remember. I ordered a latte and a flatbread, the young lad who made my coffee was really polite and he produced a great looking coffee with some fancy artwork so safe to say it was the best coffee I’ve had in a while. The food was great also so other than the bar lady on the till everything was great so thank you.

“DL Bolton”

★★★★☆

written by ReeseGibbons173 on 03/12/2018

Bolton DL is very good - great staff, very relaxing club room, good instructors. Down side is the maintenance, it takes them ages to fix anything and the attention to detail isn't as good as it used to be. A few tweaks, a bit of pride, and it would be excellent.

“Unprofessional cleaner ”

★★★★☆

written by Foleypc154 on 26/10/2016

I go to the David Lloyd on kingswood in hull, I really do love everything about it and the 500K redo has made it even more better, but I have one complaint and I'm hoping someone sees this and puts me to rest, there's a teenager girl cleaner who's roughly there at 4pm onwards, she is constantly staring inappropriately at me and my boyfriend and every time we see her, she tries to push her b.u.m out as much as she can to grab my boyfriends attention and she even pulls her leggings up so they look abit see through, she really makes me feel uncomfortable, I hope the club could have a word and give her a warning because if this continues I'm not one to take everything slowly and I will complain to the manager about a cleaner making me feel uncomfortable, hopefully my problems will be addressed as I attend everyday

“David Lloyd brook lands ”

★★★★☆

written by Americas433 on 27/06/2015

Good gym and friendly staff, I have never had any problems whilst being a member here. I think the reviews that people give for the brook lands branch are quite harsh, gym is really good and clean and the staff up there are really helpful, I recently had a session with a personal trainer who was really helpful and patient with me and showed me how everything worked and what to do to achieve my goal. Lovely pool and spa sauna steam room and jacuzzi and really good cafe with good food and wide selection, couldn't fault it and after recently being refurbished showers and changing rooms are done to a high standard and clean. Free hairdryers and lockers and I feel like you get what you pay for, I think other cheaper gyms are dingy and dirty compared to David Lloyd. Nothing I would of liked to know any more then what I was told before I became a member also free guest passes every month which is good so I can bring a friend for a swim and some lunch. I would definitely recommend to a friend and family and personally think it's a lot better then certain reviews make it sound but don't listen to everything you here Pop down and see for yourself

“Basildon facilities are good but badminton is not”

★★★★☆

written by sallyfields2014 on 28/05/2014

The badminton facilities as Basildon are ok however couple of little issues. Firstly the people who use the courts to play soft racket ball go all over the courts and disrupt play, they also leave the nets down at the wrong height. The second thing is that the lights should have some type of covers on them as when aiming for the shuttlecock it glares in your eyes and you cant see where the shuttlecock is. Other than that the other facilities are good, gym equipment is a bit dated but changing rooms are clean.

“Excellent club...but be smart before joining!”

★★★★☆

written by on 06/07/2013

I just joined the Glasgow West End one a week ago, and because DL is considerably more expensive than other gyms I had to think long and hard about joining and decided to do my research by looking at websites like this. I agree with other posters that the 3 month notice period isn't made that clear by the membership staff who appear to be on commission and desperate to make a sale. That said, I'm very glad I joined, it's an excellent facility and it is totally geared towards people like me with kids which is why I joined. We're really enjoying our membership so far! Top tip: if you pay your membership up front for the year it works out considerably cheaper, for one adult and one child I've saved around £300 by paying up front than if I'd paid by DD.

What is the actual monthly amount for two adults and two kids. Live round the corner from the Glasgow West End one and they are offering a free trial week just now and then flexible membership options. I was quoted £135 per month with a £90 joining fee a few months back.

“Good facilities but pricey. ”

★★★★☆

written by winchester1001 on 15/02/2012

I was generally happy with Lloyds Gym. The facilities were very good and it was clean and pleasant. However I am no longer a member as they have some competitors who are much cheaper with comparable facilities for the gym itself. For those who use the tennis facilities and go quite often the price is probably ok. On a minor note I found the cafeteria to have some fairly unfriendly staff. Not what you want when you want to relax after using the gym, but I found the instructors more than helpful which was the main thing.

“Good, no complaints”

★★★★☆

written by on 16/09/2011

I joined my local David Lloyd in North London recently, and I am very happy with it. I waited for a while before joining, so I could see what else was out there, but it ticks all the boxes for me. I wanted somewhere family friendly, clean, and where I could use the gym, and work with my laptop, and does all of that and more. Sure, it does not come cheap, but you get what you pay for. The staff seem ok, and there seems to be a mix of people, but so far, I am very happy with it, and would happily recommend it.

“Over the 5 years that I have been a member of David...”

written by on 08/04/2011

Over the 5 years that I have been a member of David Lloyd at Southend, the standard has fluctuated but generally is quite good. This I believe this down to how effective the General manager performs. The weakest point at Southend club is the attitude of some of the staff. They should try harder to acknowledge members to give them a sense of belonging to their club. The new GM Jon Kohn seems to be addressing this point as there is a noticable improvement to the friendliness of the reception team and refreshment staff. All he needs to do now is work on the attitude of some of the gym team.

“Reading these reviews surprised me somewhat, as for...”

★★★★☆

written by on 30/01/2011

Reading these reviews surprised me somewhat, as for the most part I'm a satisfied customer of just under 18 months.

I'm a member of David Lloyd Bolton, and I find the mixture of classes, trainers, staff and town-centre location to be very good. The facilities are above average, probably the club room needs a slight refurbishment but that's all.

The personal trainers can really put you through your paces and the cardio section is large and well-stocked. There is a small area for floor work, a fair few machines and a decent free weights area. Outdoor and indoor pool too.

On the one occasion there was a payment issue (duplicate payment) it was back in my bank the day after. A report on a leaky tap was sorted fairly quickly too.

If you can go three or four times a week or you are a dedicated trainer, then I would thoroughly recommend it but otherwise save your money. DL clubs are as much a lifestyle as they are a gym in my opinion.

“After much deliberation I finally joined David Lloyd...”

★★★★☆

written by pool fan on 05/12/2010

After much deliberation I finally joined David Lloyd Cheshire Oaks and am so glad I did.

The gym is always clean, there's never a problem with getting onto the equiptment and the staff have always been friendly and helpful. The equiptment is always top notch and the staff really helped me get the most from what I was doing.

It is not cheap and to be honest I would not have joined had it not been so close to where I live (would have joined DW Fitness which is half the cost) but having joined I am using it 3 times a week and getting value for money.

There's a lot of 1 star reviews on here and they worried me before I joined but I noticed that the majority are from disgruntled people who had not understood the contract and then don't like it when they are not treated sympathetically. At the end of the day DL is a business and maybe they are a bit ruthless but just make sure you understand the cancellation policy (it's not rocket science). My contract was explained fully to me and I got everything in writing.

I found this review very helpful because...you are the first to talk sense. I have just had a tour of the local DL to me and the facilities are far better than any of the other rivals such as LA Fit and Esporta etc.

Yes its costly but you get what you pay for and you are right they are a business they need to cover costs and pay staff not cave in to every bleeding heart story or they would go bust like many other business.

I will be joining and thanks for your review it just made my mind up!! Cheers

I am a member of DL Reading and although the price is high i think the quality of the club, facililites and variety of classes is fantastic. The changing rooms are always clean and they continually ask for feedback. The equipment is great and the class instructors are always fantastic. The pool is also lovely and i was shown around the club in detail before making my decision to join. Overall i am very pleased with my membership.

~Oh you do not know how lucky you are - wait until you want to get out - for whatever reason - even if you DIE!!!! You will still be expected to pay their cancellation charges - warn the executors of your estate and your next of kin because these guys will pursue you to the ends of the earth, heaven and hell if necessary!!!!

“My husband & I recently joined David Lloyd Manchester...”

★★★★☆

written by on 23/06/2010

My husband & I recently joined David Lloyd Manchester Trafford and are happy with the facilities. The price does seem a little steep, but when you compare it to other local gyms it is MUCH better.
What we like:
- good facilities; lots of classes
- a range of different people attend and most are friendly
- can always park
- if you go at the right times (off peak) you'll possibly get the whole indoor pool to yourself!
- good number and range of equipment in the gym - we've never had to wait for any piece of equipment.
What we don't like:
- the staff are fine, but slightly moronic
- too many children - they run up and down corridors and take up space in the 'adult' pool (either as part of lessons or with their parents). You have to time it carefully if you want to guarantee a nice uncrowded swim in the lanes.
The previous reviews tend to criticise the contract cancelling. Obviously we haven't experienced that yet, but we hope to be going to the gym for some time yet. People should decide how seriously they are going to take going to the gym AND the 'what ifs' i.e. losing job. If you can't afford it, don't join. The 3 month cancellation is not dissimilar to most mobile phone contracts.

“I have been a member at David Lloyd on and off for...”

★★★★☆

written by on 07/06/2010

I have been a member at David Lloyd on and off for about 10 years and use several clubs. I think the facilities are fantastic. Saturday was a lovely hot and sunny day so we spent the entire day at a BBQ by the outdoor pool at out local club in Leeds, fab! The gym is one of the biggest I've ever seen and always has up to date equipment, currently all the machines are being replaced after only being in for about 3 years max. I never have to wait for a machine and there are over 100 classes most weeks. Staff are friendly, no complaints from me. It is more expensive than other clubs in the area but if you break it down into how much it costs you per day its well worth it if you are a regular user. Only slight negatives are that the building needs a bit of money spending on it but that seems to be happening at the moment also the food can be a bit pricey. I think that everyone should understand that joining a gym is no different from taking out any other contract such as a mobile phone, if you sign up to say you agree to the terms and conditions you shouldn't be surprised if you are expected to honor them, which in the case of any gym chain you will be 100% asked to do! I always get a receipt for letters that I hand in at the club and would send mail by recorded deliver. Simples!

“Woah! I'm quite surprised to see so many bad reviews...”

★★★★☆

written by on 12/05/2010

Woah! I'm quite surprised to see so many bad reviews of David Lloyd. I was a member of the Birmingham DL during 2006-2008. I had to end my membership with them as I had to move location for my job.

I joined a fitness first gym after this and I can gladly say that DL was much better. The staff at Bham were fine, the only thing I didnt like was that the cleaners would come into the sauna at 10.45 and ask customers to leave so that they could clean when I was told that the place closes at 11pm when I signed up.

Many people have been complaiming about the 3 months notice you have to give but the staff at Bham notified me of this when I signed up. I think the gym membership is quite expensive, I was paying 60 quid a month but I suppose its worth every penny if you are using the gym on a regular basis. The equipment was well maintained and their was enough equipment so that you didnt have to wait ages to use something.

I did visit DL in Harrow and Sudbury Hill and I have to say that their gyms were not as good as the Bham one. Overall its worth joining up if you have the money and the commitment to go gym on a regular basis. Hope this has helped

“Firstly I do not work for David Lloyd and have been...”

★★★★☆

written by SomethingElse on 08/01/2010

Firstly I do not work for David Lloyd and have been deceived by them in the past, with regards to the endless moaning of a few on here with regards to costs.

Monthly membership is approx £70 per person that's £17 a week if you go three times a week that's a fiver a visit, for that you get OK gym, sauna, steam room, swimming pool, bar and changing and showers and private parking. Yes they will try and fleece you for private trainers and other people coming with you but the basic package would in my eyes seem a reasonable cost. The three month notice is a joke and the best advice I can give is quit before the year ends, like most contracts if you fail to do this properly they will abuse it but that is 100% down to a mistake you have made not them. I have a letter at home I have had since last year stating my contract will end of February when I complete the year so you do not have to wait to the final month to hand in your notice. In my opinion for a fiver a visit this is good value shame about the three month notice period.

★★★★☆

written by on 13/12/2009

I'm sorry guys, but if you're paying around £60 per month for a service then you should make sure you understand all the facts before signing any contract with DL. I'm afraid i have no sympathy for anyone saying they didn't know there was a 3 month cancellation period, or that there was a 12 month contract. If you want to leave then you take in your signed letter, then get a signed receipt from the receptionist or sales team. After 3 months you cancel your direct debit and the gym is cancelled. As long as you keep this info then there should be no problems with cancelling, and if there is then you have all the legal documentation if they try to take it further. Why would anyone sign a contract without knowing all the details, makes no sense.

“Member of Basildon Club since March I am forced to...”

★★★★☆

written by SomethingElse on 10/11/2009

Member of Basildon Club since March I am forced to leave after 11 months as the club is local to where I work rather than live.

I have complained about the fact the notice period was never mentioned until I had joined and signed. David Lloyd sent the following reply;

Hi

No that is not correct, our membership terms and conditions are clear with regards to cancellation processes - within your initial term of 12-months you can give written notice up to end of month 11 to cancel at the end of 12th month (i.e. joined 15.03.09, term starts 01.04.09, cancellation to be received by 28.02.10 giving one months written notice for 31.03.10) Once a membership has gone past the 11-month then our standard notice of 3-calendar months notice is required to cancel and this can be put in at any time (i.e. written notice received 15.03.10, 3-calendar months notice gives cancel date of 30th June 2010).

Our third party debt collection agency are only instructed for memberships which go into arrears for longer than 30 days where we have been unsuccessful in recovering the arrears ourselves.

Notice periods are fairly standard procedure within the Health & Fitness industry. We do manage a membership system for circa 450,000 members, so we need to have guidelines in place to manage it effectively and to ensure consistency amongst everyone. When managing so many members it is vital that both staff and members know what timelines we work towards and this is clearly communicated. In additions, our terms and conditions have been awarded with the Crystal Mark for Plain English and ease of understanding.

I hope that our response assures you that we have nothing to hide in our terms and conditions or the way we administer membership processing. However, should you have any further queries please do not hesitate to contact our General Manager,
Thank you for your email and for allowing us to answer your concerns.
Kind regards

Its all relative. Been going 2 years and down to 13st - (6ft Male)
If you can pay £70 per month for single membership and want to go to a clean gym where you never have to wait to get on your equipment then this is the place for you. Also all walks of life go to David Lloyds so if you weigh 30 stonne or age 70 plus, or in a wheelchair, its good - no one blinks an eye.
