“Rude and pretentious staff and members”

★☆☆☆☆

written by MrSjj on 22/03/2013

After visiting the centre in St Albans today with a small group I can only encourage people to move away, or not join, this centre. The staff were extremely unhelpful, rude, officious and unwelcoming to me and my group. The members were also snooty and pretentious. I wouldn't personally join, or indeed visit, this disgusting centre again even if you paid me!

“Rude staff ruin an otherwise good gym”

★★☆☆☆

written by on 07/11/2012

I've been a member of Nuffield gym in Bristol for years and have always found members of the reception staff to be unfriendly, rarley greeting you when you enter the club. However, it's now the trainers on the gym floor who are ill mannered. One trainer/manager in particular who's been there for years has progressively become surlier, unfriendly and even aggressive. He creates a bad atmosphere which several other members have commented on. Couple this with the smell of food being cooked in the downstairs restaurant and it makes for a rather unenjoyable experience. I thnink there are gyms around with friendlier staff that are worth e ploring.

“The worst Staff!!”

written by on 12/04/2012

I went to join and then was told I needed to pay a joining fee which was fine, but then I had to set up a standing order which again is standard. But then I need to sign of 12months with no cancellation notice. I did as the gym as close. Then I was in a car crash and now unable to walk, I sent them a doctors letter and even made a vist in person and still they wont let me off the 10 months I have left. If i last that long!!!

“Nuffields health club, (Canons) Fulham”

written by Fitnesslady on 04/04/2012

Dirty, uneducated staff and money grabbing company. They take your money, put your life at risk and don't want to know. The smell of sewage permeates the air; the changing rooms are dirty; the loos are genearlly unflushed; there aren't any staff and those who are there don't always know what they are doing. The directors don't want to know they just recited the riot act to you ie you pay or we sue you when you try to leave. There is no customer care, little professionalism and a lot of red tape - they'll do anything to ensure you pay them but they'll do nothing to ensure your safety. Managers don't know what to do when the fire alarms sounds! It's evil!

Hatty2012's Response to Fitnesslady's Review

Absolutely agree. I have been a member for many years and have discovered that the rot comes from the very top,I escalated my complaints and found the managers at head office even worst than the rude arrogant staff they employ, all backing each other up beautifully.
Nuffield's general motto is: the client is always wrong! Our staff is always right, no matter what. and they are of the belief that if a member does not like the way the staff do things, Nuffield, I was told are more than happy to lose its members, asking long time mebers to leave rather than back down or apologise, if things go wrong!
I also worry about the hygene standards as non nappy trained kids are allowed in the pool without a pool nappy. When it is brought to the attention of staff they respond by saying oh well there is not much we can do about it. People walk in the pool area with out door shoes constantly. This has been happening over many years and even though Nuffield goes through the motions of listening to members complaints, when in fact they never get round to adressing issues raised.
And to add insult to injury it is a really expensive club with very limited activities on offer. In my view it is a a club that really needs a big changeover of staff, beginning at the very top, with intensive training in customer service/ care and how to run what should be a private members club and then maybe memebrs would feel most importantly RESPECTED, valued and listened to.Only then would Nuffied be able to offer a much more positive experience to its members.

“Customer care”

★★☆☆☆

written by lyndel on 22/02/2012

I was a member of Cannon Gym Chichester and had no problems until it was taken over by Nuffield when it became a nightmare. The pool very often cold, lockers broken, changing room curtains missing, lack of hairdryers, light bulbs missing etc etc. There are only a couple of staff who are helpful, the rest treat the members with contempt. They are not consistant with there monthly charges, some people who joined the same time were charged less. Having joined in November and was told the contract run out in January therefore I could not cancel membership till then. A couple of us are now being pursued for payment of a months notice when we were clearly out of contract.

“Management are deceitful and money grubbing ”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 26/07/2011

Leatherhead branch. Having been a member for over 9 years, once this gym changed to Nuffield Health the whole atmosphere altered. It's all about cash now and people do not matter. I cancelled my membership, a letter delivered by hand and with plenty notice but they now tell me it has to be sent by recorded delivery. This isn't in the T&Cs and wasn't when I initially joined. They claim I could have inspected the new T&Cs if I had wanted to but how are we supposed to know they have changed!!?? They are claiming a further payment and since I am refusing to succumb to their bully boy tactics they have referred me to a debt collection agency (a nasty one) and to a solicitor (who won't give me a name to deal with). An unscrupulous lot through and through. Don't go near them.

Having the same with Nuffield Health Stoke Poges - Got made redundant in April sent letter in to them with termination of contract. Contract ended with Mays payment, so cancelled DD. They then tried to claim for payment in June. Then got Carrs debt collectors onto me chasing the missing payment of £52. They then asked for proof of redundancy so sent in this. Debt agency rang today saying NH say i owe them money despite my contract ending so argued with them saying im phoning NH. Rude woman spoke to me saying that the redundancy letter was "unacceptable" despite coming from company. Told me i owed them £52 still and to phone the club tomorrow. Not happy.

This review is specifically about the Bristol Nuffield (Cannons) Health and Welness Centre:

Very well placed in Clifton, but inadequate parking means I rarely get a chance to use the facilities to their fullest. Swimming pool, steam room etc perfect for relaxing after a hard day, and a broad range of exercise classes. Nice fitness arena with a good variety of equipment.

Generally a nice gym let down by some of the staff. Receptionists rude and fail to acknowledge you when you enter or leave the gym, personal trainers disinterested and looking bored, management don't seem to care.

“Nuffield Health Centre Letchworth claims to be...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Herts Rotarian on 02/02/2011

Nuffield Health Centre Letchworth claims to be interested in their members, to monitor and encourage your progress. This is utter nonsense.

These people are interested only in your money. Once they have you signed up you barely merit a grunt from the gym staff, the manager is rude, obnoxious and in desperate need of customer care training and frankly should not be in any position of authority.

The changing rooms, especially the loos and showers leave a lot to be desired. Damaged lockers, rubbish and worse on the floor. If you have the audacity to report this nothing happens.

The gym staff never seem happy in their jobs and staff turnover appears very high which gives no continuity of support.

I genuinely believed this was perhaps a 'rogue' club in terms of the ethos Nuffield espose on their website. Sadly the rot clearly starts at head office - the customer care team are misnamed - they are not interested in customers and quite clearly have no intention of investigating or resolving concerns.

There are many better value, cleaner, friendlier gyms and I would urge anyone who has a genuine interest in getting fit and improving their health to choose an independent health club rather than this top heavy excuse for money grabbing.

“i joined nuffeilds plymouth on a pay monthly...”

written by on 24/09/2010

i joined nuffeilds plymouth on a pay monthly membership about a year ago and firstly they set up two direct debits (good for them, bad for me) taking £110 for the first month instead of the agreed £55.the person i spoke to at the club seemed very casual about it all like it happens all the time.they would not return the outstanding sum to my card and would only issue a cheque.which involved time out to visit the bank.following this i have found the changing rooms to vary in their cleanliness, sometimes smelling strongly of urine and peoples bits left in the showers.even used tampons! when i told the desk staff about it they just shrugged and said that tampons were always left in showers and there was nobody in to clean the ladies so i can only assume they got left 'til the following day!equipment is often left broken for long periods, the sauna caught fire (with people inside!) about month ago and is still out of action. during the summer months the pool air and water temperture became dangerously hot for anyone wanting to have a good swim session. when i spoke to the desk staff i was met by the usual shrug and told it always gets like that because the windows dont open and there is no air con' the situation didnt change so i left a message in the comment book asking if the temperture could be reduced.later someone had written underneath in large letters, "THE POOL IS THE CORRECT TEMPERTURE!!!",obviously the customer is not always right at nuffeild.the club boasts a freindly atmosphere but i have found that most of the time i come and go with out any aknowledgement.the guys on the desk are usually fooling around amongst themselves or there is nobody around at all and the P.Ts are usually just doing there own session.once i used the club outside of my off peak hours and was pounced upon by the desk staff who gave me a right dressing down but let me go in 'just this once' i was suprised since the members are not exactly queueing out the door.(i wonder why?) then on leaving the same staff member followed me out the door holding up my membership and quoting the terms and conditions.(ironic really since my presence at the club had gone virtually unnoticed until that moment never)at a later date there were no towels so i was unable to do my session during my off-peak hours so commiting the ultimate sin i went along later out side of hours and i was challenged by the same staff member,i mentioned the towels and asked why members had not been emailed about the situaton she told me that a select few had been told. which raised the question, who are the select few and how does one qualify? but by then i'd had enough and felt i had no other option other than to cancel my membership which they seemed only too keen to accept and completely missed a prime oppertunity to sell me a 12 month peak time membership which would have cost me less and i would have accepted but they only seemed interested in blindly banging home there point about off peak times, thus loosing another member. i feel the staff lack any form of p.r training and their aim is to get by with as iittle out-put as possible.i have only mentioned a few problems here as the whole list would be too numerous but my advice is to avoid this club.there are other better ones out there.

I have only been to this gym (Chichester) a couple of times but have found it very good. It has a vast range of equipment, swimming pool, steam room etc. The staff are friendly and helpful and changing room is very good. I use to be in another gym that was far cheaper and allowed you to play squash and badminton for free, but this is by far much better. Also never seems over packed.

LIke with anything that costs money, check it out before you sign up.

★★★★★

written by granadan on 04/04/2010

I am a member of the Nuffield (Cannons) gym in Letchworth.

The facilities are spotless, and always in full working order. I have never seen a machine out of action for more than 24 hours, I go daily.

Staff are professional, there always seems to be a trainer hanging around and they are approachable and always willing to help. Staff on reception are friendly, helpful and a pleasure to meet up with each morning. The creche is superb, my 20 month old son screams with delight when we approach the building and legs it up the stairs to get there.

The pool is warmer than any of the local swimming pools. And if you use the facilities regularly, membership works out far cheaper than me going swimming monthly at the local Council pool - which is dirty, smelly, poorly staffed and cold.

Cannot rate the place highly enough, members appear to feel valued and everyone is friendly. The staff are simply smashing. Showers are hot and abundant, lockers are clean and plenty of them. Lots of classes and seminars to attend if wanted. TV always on in the gym and all you need to do is take in your own headphones to use the radio/tv box thingies that are attached to each machine. never thought I'd say that anywhere could make exercise a pleasure, but this manages it. pricey, at £60 a month, but that would only cover me for a mere 12 swims (on my own) at the local pool - and this one lets me take my under fives with me too for free.

“I've been a member of nuffield (cannons) in BRISTOL...”

★★★☆☆

written by on 16/11/2009

I've been a member of nuffield (cannons) in BRISTOL for the past 4 years. Whilst it is quite a good size and they've recently improved the steam room, it still has some serious problems. As it is built about a nearby restaurant (Cosmos), every lunchtime it stinks of garlic and food being cooked. This problem has been going on for years and I can't understand why they don't get an engineer to look at the air conditioning. Also, the usual couple of staff who man reception and generally unfriendly, don't greet you and are generally pretty unhelpful.

written by on 27/10/2009

I tried to enquire about making an investment into the company. They reception staff could not comprehend this, told me that they do not speak to anyone other than members and do not have e-mail or the facility to write anything down in order for someone to get back to me! Despite making it very clear I was not selling anything and actually looking to make an investment they insisted that they couldn't put me through to anyone. The representative suggested I write in to complain and continued to shout out a postal address at speed, then promptly hung up on me. So very rude and obstructive, on par with the worst I have come across in many years of business.

Granadan's Comment

Has nothing to do with the gym itself whatsoever. More of a rant about the attitude of a member of the reception tam who, to be honest are not the people to approach about the financial running of the business.

“ I have been a member of Cannons Health Club in...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Red Devon on 12/08/2009

I have been a member of Cannons Health Club in Plymouth since its inaurgation in 1999.

My continued membership does not represent satisfaction with the facilities or services in Plymouth but a resignation to the fact that there's no viable competition in this area of the city. Staff on the whole are pleasant but lack experience, or any incentive, or responsiblity, for solving problems such as repair and maintenance of equipment. There is no effective maintenance and repair programme. When an item, for example a shower head, becomes defective the maintenance staff have to wait weeks for a new part to arrive for the repair.

Under the new company, Nuffield Cannons, things seem to have got worse and the Head Office has distanced itself from the local clubs and is concentrated on promoting itself to new members without regard to current members. Swimming members of our club, including me, were incensed when the pool was shut for 2 weeks for a replacement pumping system without any apology or compensation. We still had to pay full fees and were fobbed off that we could use the gym. They were reluctant to give us a named person in the head office to complain to.

Clearly the bulk of membership by the reviews here are unhappy. The company has been proven to be uncaring and is possibily in crisis as a result.

written by Davemdarcy on 29/07/2009

Nuffield Health club in Aylesbury and their head office in Kingston are one of the poorest customer service experiences I have ever encountered. They cancel activities, do not communicate with members and offer no explanation. Their is no obvious route to Customer service at head office, when you get a call back is rude beyond beleif, with an attitude of "tough! thats the rules". The CEO e has not replied to my contact efforts. I would move to a competitor today if there was a local alternative. They have no customer focus and see this as fine.

I've been member of Cannons'nuffield'' for 3 years now and i just love the club...But today i heard the most rediculos thing ever! My friend was looking for a club so i sujest her to come with me for a tryal, but when we where there the receptionist sayd that she had to pay £5,00 deposit and if she did not sign the contract she would loose her money.
The last email that i had from then was asking to bring a friend for a FREE tryal and if they would joy the club they would have the rest of the month free... It was very embarrassing !!!!

written by armstra on 09/07/2009

Advised only way I could cancel my cannons health club membership was to send a letter of come in to gym. They said the letter was 2 days late. So annoyed as t&c's said I could email my cancellation request.

Rand to speak to manager, deputy manager took message and said she'd be intouch to discuss. Next thing debt collection agency letter.

I will certainly never join this gym again they have since lost 4 close friends who are members following my experience.

written by MERLIN12 on 10/06/2009

NUFFIELD HEALTH, Or CANNONS, HERTFORD.******** DO NOT JOIN , THIS IS THE WORST PLACE I HAVE EVER BEEN TO TRAIN AND ITS NEARLY 60 QUID A MONTH**************The staff are hopeless, Not willing to help, more interested in chatting to fellow staff members about what they are doing at the weekend. Management dont listern to concerns raised and are quite clearly not bothered about clients leaving - As long as they have there money from you for a good peroid of time before you go. There are faults with alot of the equipment, the staff are never in a hurry to get them fixed. The showers are oftern broken or have no soap etc. The changing room are a mess. I have been to other Nuffield health gyms and they are of a much better standard. This is a pooly run gym, the only reason i can see that it is so busy is that there is no compertion in the hertford area.
