Very good Movie sound on Sony DAV-S300. Small size is attractive. 6+ years and still works great. Finally used optical audio connection for use with Blue-Ray player and everything sounds great. Not the best solution for CD audio. Movies are what this system has been tweaked for. Will hang on bad discs, but generally no issues.

Good system for domestic use.

Had the Sony DAV-S300 system for over three years now with no problems at all. Will happily play DVD +R & DVD+RW discs burnt on my PC & Sony DVDR. Anyone managed to play DVD-R, DVD-RW Disks? Am about to get DVD Cam which uses these formats. Not a major issue as DVDR will play them anyway.

I have the DAV-S300 for 4 years now...It's an US system, I moved to Europe and I am only using it as an amp. and of course region movies. Now I have the following problem. the right front speaker doesn't work...when the device is "cold" it works...after a couple of minutes when the device is warmed up I only hear a very soft static, sound is gone. If I wiggle the connection in back of the player sometimes it works, but never stays on. Anyone have any experience with this on how to fix it? Another forum gave me this advice:
'Probably a bad or at least an intermittent connection. Have you tried swapping out the speaker and wire with the left front to make sure that it is in the receiver itself. If so, try taking the cover of and taking a look inside at the terminal. The fact that it works and then quits as it warms up could be indicative of a cold solder joint that just needs touching up. This should be no big deal to do unless your not comfortable with soldering. If that is the case I would suggest bringing it in for repairs or perhaps to a friend that is capable.'
I did the following:
I opened the device, solder the joints, unfortunately the problem remains...very annoying! I am very happy with the DAV-s300.
I think it's a heating problem...after appr. 5 minutes the sound is gone.

Same problem here but with SONY DAV-S400 sony is not good.
This problem comes from the DRY JOINTS whatever that means. 80 euros is too much i have paid already for the system i don't see a reason paying again to fix it.
It is a problem with ALL SONY SYSTEMS be aware. Every 2nd system has this problem.

Hi,
I've got also a SONY DAV S300. Could you tell me if you solve the the problem with the free region and how?
Thank you in advance for your response.

Got mine fixed for 80 euros...don't know what they did, so I guess it's not a huge problem. It just went to a local electronic shop...

Same problem here, only that the right channel stopped working completely. There was no correlation between the system warming up and the right channel working. It just stopped working. Once I tried moving the connections and I got it back, but now that is not working anymore. Shame because this is a fine systems.

Don't bin your Sony DAV-S300 yet...
YOU CAN REPAIR THIS YOURSELF EASILY
MINE SOMETIMES REFUSES DVD'S AS WELL, BUT YOU CAN RECALIBRATE IT VIA THE ENGINEERS SETUP MENU.
This info is only useful to realign the drive using DVD single layer/dual and layer audio CD.
It's too complicated to write what to do, but I would forward this to you by email.
I still love this system, and I would have loved it more if it had digital sound inputs.
The Sony will play CD/R disks. The Sirius brand is best, but only burn audio at 4x max for them to work.
IT HAS EVEN PLAYED A DVD/R DISK ONCE, so the disks must be getting better!!!

How to Access the secret service menu in the Sony DVD

Press Muting and Return buttons and Turn the volume Knob to the Right

Then the screen will show the service menu

Use of this Service Menu Can Mess up your Player completely.

Do Write down Any values you change beforehand.

But it’s Pretty Safe to Just Run the Calibration Tests.

#

Select option 1 and follow the instructions.

Cleaning the lens of the player just before re-calibration would be a good Idea as well.

To Recalibrate the DVD you will need a Single layer DVD and a Double layer DVD.

You must run both tests to set the Drive up properly and you may as well do the CD test too.

I used my copy of Jackie Brown as it’s the only single layer disk I Know I have, a cheap cartoon of short duration may be single layer, or a Music DVD.

Cheers

Hi!

I have just run the test. The first remark is, that the test screen is black & white. Is it normal?

After checking all types of disks, only the DVD-SL shows error. The test is running but stops at the Focus On stage and writes: Error!!! Adjustment Quit, Focus On in the middle of the screen, and "EMG. FO" in the right bottom.

Do you have any idea how to clean the lens? Please can you let me know via the Review Centre forum?

Thanks in advance.
Zsolt.

THANK YOU so much for this help - it has saved my player's life! I can now play several discs that had stopped working - in fact all bar one (David Bowie's greatest hits - FYI, a dual-layer disc).

I can also play DVD+RW discs (although not DVD+R) which is great for checking out my home movies.

For anyone else about to do this - I did have to try a couple of different discs for the recalibration before it would then play the discs that had stopped working.

I first tried a new disc, but the one that did the trick was The Matrix. I used a new Music disc for the single layer (and now my DVD+RW discs play every time).

Good luck everyone!

I bought my Sony DAV-S300 in 2001 and not had any problems at all (touch wood). Superb.

I've had this Sony DAV-S300 since July 2001 and so far so good, knock on wood. I watch an average of 1 DVD a week so I don't really put it into regular use. The sound is good enuf for my second bedroom (I call it my ER or Entertainment Room). The woofer works fine unless you want deafness-causing volume then get an improved woofer. If you live in a condo like myself it works alright. It played some VCDs and SVCDs that I made but it takes a while for them to load. I have problems getting it to read CDRWs but then again, how often do we do that? If you don't plan on using it to play your home made movies of your kids running around, all DVDs in your region will play just fine. The clarity is awesome and controls easy to use. I recommend it as a starter kit and if you lack the space to get all components separately.

The first s300 was baught from a home shopping and was returned the same day as there was no sound from the right bank of speakers. i have a video camera and decided with the help of nero burning rom to make my own V.C.D. home video disk. it took six hours to compile into an mpeg video and a further 2 hours for nero to re-compile into a v.c.d. the a further 1 hour to write it at x8 speed. only to find that my s300 told me there was "no disk",. for sound and video quality this unit is one of the best, but is verry selective in which re-writable cd you use. also and is anoying any home made video mpegs you make, there is a 60 millisecond delay in the sound for which i yet have no answer,. the same v.c.d. played from my comuter d.v.d. drive is fine...if you can shed light on to some of the s300 niggles i would love to here from you.

Just purchased this unit from UK high street retailer and on 2nd film, (Harry Potter) have the C13:00 ERROR. Looks like I'm taking it back within the 28 days and getting a full refund as after reading other threads here about this error, I have no confidence in the supplier/manufacturer putting it right.
Problem is, what do I replace it with in UK for less than £400 ? Any ideas ?

The Sony davs300 DVD player is a good system but you have to step up to the davs500 if you want to play back cdr discs. An easier solution is to buy a cheap discman which will play back cdr discs and connect to the davs300 using a 3.5mm jack to two phono lead-that should solve your problems.

i have read that it is possible to hear music with Vivastar 80 min. cdr's. Is it true?

one way around this problem with cdr disc is to attach a discman to the system that is able to play cdr's

The DVD player is amazing it gives you value for money, and the best part is that it's all so compact. However the system has one big problem, and that is the C13:00 error, I've been getting that since the first day, and it's very annoying.

I also have the very same problem with this system which is annoying as you wont fined a better system on the market for the money. I've even tried the gentle approach bating it but only seems to work for a short time.
