“Now just a package hotel”

★★★☆☆

written by Bristoll99 on 08/01/2014

Used to go each year but ridiculous price increases have made us go elsewhere. The area around hotel is increasingly vey run down , looking in places like a sink council estate, actually saw a car up on bricks outside a run down block of flats. The service in hotel is fantastic but unless you want to eat masses of food the restaurant is too expensive in evening, they will tell you they have two, this is a lie. There is only one in the evening. The hotel is noisey being built up against the new motorway, also cleaners and delivery staff ensure you are woken up on the studio side of hotel at 5:30. Plus I find the way they text people asking them to give good reviews despicable.

I was quite disappointed as I read over the Louis King Jason Hotel reviews and it sounded wonderful. Whether they let standards slip being that hectic time of year or whether we were just unlucky with the cleaners that cleaned our block. During our time there, 3 other families had been at reception complaining.. Another family to a rep and these are only the times while we had been walking through reception.

“Be careful when deciding what dates to go there. It is...”

★★★★★

written by ljh on 07/10/2006

Be careful when deciding what dates to go there. It is justifiably popular with families with children during the school holidays, which means during these periods the pool is full with lots of children enjoying themselves (and of course being noisy...).
Outside this period the complex changes completely and becomes an oasis of calm.

It is 5 - 10 minutes leisurely walk to Paphos harbour where you'll find Bar street (clubs and bars for the young at heart), shops and a wide range of restaurants.
You can get anything from a meal for £4 and breakfast for £1.50, up to meals which will stand in comparison with quality restaurants in London at less that £20 a head, including drinks. Highly recommended restaurants are:
- Almond Tree - excellent. A fascinating fusion of Cypriot and Far East cuisine. The portions range from generous to "I don't think I can eat that much", so make sure you're hungry
- Chez Alex - superb fish restaurant owned by a local fisherman - so the fish is truly fresh
- La Mandra - superb steak restaurant based in an old cattle shelter
- Kinares Hotel in the old town. A wonderful old building, family-run hotel, which takes you back to the Paphos of 60 years ago. They have a superb restaurant in a quiet courtyard at the back

Other recommended places / activities:
- Pinguinos - a great local snack bar / cafe on the front, popular with locals and tourists alike. A great place to relax and people-watch, with good snacks/meals
- Stoa. A friendly bar serving good food in a very unlikely location (under Paphos Aquarium). The owner is a passionate football supporter....
- Monroe's Bar - a micro-brewery bar serving a range of real ale brewed on the premises (claims to be the only such place in Paphos and I haven't found another yet....)
- if you like classic opera (!?) and go to Paphos at the very beginning of September, they have a festival every year with 3 nights of opera in the open air using the castle as the backdrop. This year it was "The Masked Ball" by Verdi, and it was performed by the State Academic Mariinsky Theatre company from St. Petersburg, Russia. Watching an Italian opera in Paphos, in the open air in the evening, with subtitles on screens in Cypriot and English, performed by a Russian company, in the open air with an 800-year old castle as the backdrop and with the sound of the sea crashing onto the shore in the background is an amazing experience.

In terms of good deals on shopping..
- jewellery - go to the market in the Old town
- leather goods - Mavris opposite Pinguinos on Paphos harbour
- designer spectacles - Elean on the front in Paphos harbour

Places to watch out for:
- The Captains Nest. A production line restaurant serving chips with everything. Food is cheap, but this is a "get you in, serve you food, get you out, get the next person in" place, so don't go here if you want a leisurely meal...
- Brazilieros (I've probably misspelled this). This is a "theme" restaurant. And the theme doesn't work
- the restaurants in the harbour near the old castle - they all employ staff who stand on the pavement trying to "persuade" you to come in, so expect to be hassled every few yards if you go here for a walk in the evening.

“I stayed at the Louis King Jason Hotel on a late deal....”

★★★★★

I stayed at the Louis King Jason Hotel on a late deal. From the moment I arrived I was impressed by the friendly helpful staff. The room was very spacious and clean. There were small gifts left for us on arrival and departure of the hotel. There was a lovely pool area with plenty of space. There was an excellent selection of food every night.

The accommodation was slightly out of town but was well worth staying there!
