“Protaras is growing and Paralimni is creeping closer,...”

★★★☆☆

written by kendalcoops on 18/09/2008

Protaras is growing and Paralimni is creeping closer, we went on a walk, out past the Rising Star, but only went round first corner to hit the building sites and the new esplanade that will join the two and no doubt bring all the beach lovers to an all ready crowded fig tree bay, we love Cyprus and in particular Protaras, and we do not want to say, we will not go again, but, we think we may look to the smaller resorts between the big ones, also bargains are almost impossible to find when eating out. What worried me is the water shortage and the locals getting cut off a couple of times a week, the massive building programme leads me to hope that there are plans to address this issue.

I cannot believe that other customers didn't hear the music from the depressing Rising Sun pub across the road, thank goodness they didn't have really late nights (12 or 1 at weekends - approx). Food was horrific too, no flavour. Not a culture vultures idea of a holiday. Rude people the locals quite often, I mean aggressive, especially the bus drivers. Sad and the prices have gone up with the advent of the euro.

“Just got back from a one week stay at the Golden Star,...”

★★★★★

written by on 24/08/2008

Just got back from a one week stay at the Golden Star, myself, partner and two children.
Yes the rooms were in need of updating but compared to some Greek/Cyprus holidays I found the apartment spacious and had all we needed. Air con in main bedroom free but only an on/off switch on the wall, could have done with a control on some nights as it wasn't set as cold as we needed it (occasionally) but definitely OK. No air con in kitchen/lounge where the children slept so hired a fan from reception. Did the job.
had a pool view and a side view of sea which was great, lovely and quiet at night just the odd sound from bar or passers by but hardly anything, mornings quiet too and fab blackout curtains meant we actually slept in most days!
Great location, five minute walk to the fabulous beach. Children spent all afternoon swimming and snorkelling in the shallows chasing fish.
Pool was small but accommodated the guests, we loved it because there was no entertainment, no music and bar very small- this may not be everybody's cup of tea but the rising star hotel facilities and pub sounded more lively for those who wanted it. Always got a sunbed, even after 10am - no towel game needed to be played however don't be disheartened if you arrive on Sat/Sun and it seems crowded as it is not always this busy, the week days much quieter.
Cleaner did a great job, reception staff always friendly and helpful, supermarket had anything we needed and more or less the same price as them all.
Recommend Astoria Restaurant on same road, just because its so near, don't pass it by food and staff fantastic, try the meat mezze or steaks. I would go back to this apartment with my family.

Had a fantastic week in mid June and will definitely be returning. Location of hotel is ideal as away from the main strip but close enough. Hotel good value for money but obvious exchange rate made eating and drinking expensive. Food so good you cannot resist!

Really enjoyed it here, great location, Protaras is awesome. Can relax or have a great laugh at the many really good bars. Plenty of really nice restaurants too. Got back 2 days ago and have already booked for next year!

I went to the Golden Star in October 2007 for my 60th birthday with my family and friends (there were 13 of us). We had a fantastic time. I agree the rooms were a bit dated but were clean. The staff were very friendly and helpful. We will certainly be going back. Even though it was the end of the season there was still plenty of to do without everywhere being overcrowded. We also had a fantastic time on the Water Sports and celebrated my 60th birthday by going paragliding with my brother. Cyprus is my favourite holiday destination. The people there are very friendly and helpful and of course the weather is superb. We will certainly be returning there in the near future and choosing the Golden Star Apartments. We couldn't find anything that spoilt our holidays, apart from the rooms being a bit dated although we were told they were due to be refurbished at some point in the future.

This is our second time, and we will be going back again. Hotel rooms are dated but very clean. Pool great, restaurant great, pub and entertainment great. When we arrived there were six families, that we met last time we stayed. It was great to see them again, and they too will be returning. Also made new friends which will be returning. This says it all. There are great places to eat for all ages. Only bad meal was pizza hut even the kids would not eat it. Really good meal was Mr Cod best fish and chips, even better than Whitby in North Yorkshire. I have been going abroad for 29 years and this is the first time we have returned to the same hotel. Hopefully the rooms will be updated and we will be able to give 10 out of 10 for everything.

written by honestlady on 17/08/2007

When we arrived we were really disappointed, the reception was really dated and so was the room. We'd paid a lot because of going in August and it wasn't at all value for money.
We spent the first two days by our pool, it was pretty boring, no entertainment or atmosphere at all, so after that we went over to the Rising Star to use there pool, it was really nice, entertainment Mon-Sat, bar serving nice food and a great kids room.
The beach by the golden star is nice but very rocky in the shallow areas, it's better to go up to Fig Tree Bay (15/20 mins walk)
Entertainment at night was good at the rising star too.
We weren't that keen on the resort as we prefer to be able to sit at bars on the sea front but instead it was set on one long road of bars, restaurants, shops and hotels. Which was very busy.
There is a really nice set of bars called 'Eden' which has a Japanese (fantastic, went twice), a Mexican (really superb), a traditional Greek Taverna, a large bar area and entertainment. It was a little bit more expensive but worth it.
There's your traditional Karaoke, 'only fools and horses', football bars (rockafellas) even a 'Friends' bar. A real mixture of restaurants Italian, Greek, Chinese (avoid China town, up the stairs. Rude staff, food - ok. There's a Mexican and also Pizza Hut and McDonalds.
Fig Tree bay is really beautiful but you need to get there early to get a sun lounger, especially at the weekend when all the locals come.
I wouldn't recommend the golden star to a friend, but I would recommend 'The Rising Star'. It's unlikely that we would go to Protaras again, even though it's geared up for families.

It does look like there are more bad points than good but we had a really good time. The resort is lovely, the only downside was the room, when we walked in from a long flight and hour's transfer it was a big disappointment. Much could be done to improve the general decoration of the rooms and the tiles on the floor are all chipped. My advice would be not to go to the Golden Star Apartments in the first week of the season as the shops aren't fully stocked. No entertainment at the pub and there still seemed to be a lot of work being carried out all around Protaras for the start of the season, not completed.

written by Steve Brown on 18/02/2007

We were so disappointed that we had only booked for one week, but we are making up for that by going for two fortnight holidays this year, and next year our daughter is getting married in the Capo Bay hotel but we shall still be staying at the GOLDENSTAR.
Everything about this lovely friendly hotel just makes you want to come back time after time - I think we have found our Shangri-La.
The pool area is spotless and at the time of year we go (mid September) is not over crowded, the restaurant serves meals throughout the day and are excellent both in value and choice.
Try the Rising Star pub on a night and the bartender will make you more than welcome with one of his special cocktails.
So I can definitely recommend The Goldenstar to anyone and if you're there in September we'll have a drink!

The Golden Star Apartments in Protaras is the best place I have been to. You can have both a relaxing holiday in the day, while at night the place is bouncing. The hotel is right on the beach, so you can't go wrong. TOP PLACE!

My holiday to Protaras is easily the best holiday I've had. I had everything I wanted from a good holiday. From a relaxing day at the pool or beach, which is literally on your door step, to the great bars like Bells bar, Ghetto bar or Robin Hood. Also, the food was great there, especially in Andamas and the the Indian.

Overall, the Golden Star Apartments in Protaras was an excellent place to stay. The location was excellent. The staff were very friendly and willing to help. The facilities were very good with the pool, the bar, and also a tennis court. The resort was also very good, with nice restaurants, and it is not far from Ayia Napa if you want to try something different. I would definitely recommend it to other people, but it is perhaps better suited for families and couples.

What a fantastic holiday. Golden Star Apartments are Situated in a lovely part close to the beach and all amenities. Could not fault it in any way. The only thing is people still insisted on reserving sun beds. Even people up in their rooms from the balconies reserved the beds and watched us move their towels and moaned at us. Entertainment excellent in the rising sun pub. All in all great place to be.
