“Works for me”

written by DddW on 06/11/2012

I have been with AOL for 12.5 years, on a Broadband only package. I live in a rural area so have no choice of fibre/cable. I have never had a problem with AOL. They increased my speed in July 2012 to 17Mb/s (from a max of 8Mb/s although quite often was much slower) and lowered the cost automatically to £10.31 a month even though I was still on a 12 month contract of £14.99 a month, for unlimited downloads. My new speeds stay steady at 17Mb/s, great for watching Netflix HD movies. The upload speed is 0.85Mb/s. I have never had a reason to contact Customer Service apart from contract renewals. Every year I call the cancellations department and they give me a better deal (now £8.31 a month for 17Mb/s, unlimited downloads). I don't use their router, in fact I have never had one from them, I use an Apple Airport Extreme - works perfectly on AOL.

AOL should be praised for making a customer happy with the broadband service, But judging by the majority of the reviews here and elsewhere you are by far the exception to the rule.
If only AOL would try to give an acceptable broadband service to all the many others it has let down as a reasonable ISP should!
Trust in AOL can only be earned with how they deal with their customers, and in that respect they fail dismally. Beware customer service if you have to contact them for anything other than normal as they maybe technology challenged. Long may your excellent service remain. Me and many others can only dream that AOL may one day give such a service to us!

Been with AOL for 10 years, broadband for 5 years. I depend on it as I work at home and so far have not experienced any problems at all.
I have Apple and Windows pcs and a wirless printer connected via a netgear wireless router.
My 8mb line gets speeds of 5-6mb in the mornings and 4-5mb in the afternoons. It is slower in the evenings and weekends due to the number of people logging on.
Never had a reason to call customer support so cannot comment on them,
The package I am on is not the cheapest but I am wary of switching to someone else after reading reviews of many ISPs.

We've been with AOL ever since dial-up (well over ten years now). The service has been great, speed is fine (about 3.5mbps) and we've rarely had any problems. Customer Services is ok - they're based in both India and Ireland, and seem friendly and helpful.
We're coming up to the end of our 18-month contract now, and are definitely going to renew with them again.

I've been with AOL for 6 years now and on the rare occasion I have an issue I've been sorted out very quicly by knowledgeable staff In Ireland. Yes they do have Indian call centres as do all but once you speak to Ireland everything is sorted very quicly./ Speed and service is very good and consistent and Any time I have asked for a reduction in price or better offer they have obliged (when I was not in contract) Call rates and packages are also well priced. I was worried about the change to CPW but thankfully my service has remained unchanged

I would have liked to have heard other peoples opinions before I bought it but after 6 years of very good service I can't say I'm disappointed.

written by krypto on 01/09/2006

I have been with AOL for about 10 years. I think I had one problem in that time and that was resolved by an advisor- problem was resolved in 2mins, and he even gave me his AOL email address at work so I could email him if the problem came back. Brilliant service.
Some people on here claim they have connection problems - probably your computer - AOL don't deal with computer issues, they deal with the AOL software. I myself choose not to use their software because I maximize my pc speed so I don't really need their software to go online, I connect by their broadband modem they supplied me.

AOL are brilliant in every way. If you have problems with their software, don't use it, use the modem settings to connect to the internet with your username and password!

I never ever get disconnected. I leave my pc on for days on end and it's still connected.
As for the guy on here that said their neighbor was still on dial up.....why is this disgusting? AOL sends leaflets all the time advising of their broadband service and the prices. It's up to your neighbor to change his service; if AOL just did it anyway he would soon complain!!!

I'm on 1mb at the moment as my area doesn't support 2mb. AOL saw this and reduced my payments from the usual £17.99 a month to £12.99 a month for 6mths to say sorry the service wasn't available in my area...how good is that? And no I didn't ask for this discount like most people do, AOL were just being a good company.

I now pay £17.99 a month, and it's worth every penny. Not only that, but my modem was damaged as I knocked it off the side, I called AOL to see how much it would cost to purchase another one, and they said they would send me a free replacement.....they are not supposed to as they have a fee for a replacement modem - which is understandable, but again they did this because they are a decent company.

The new call centre is also fantastic. SO polite, and when I called to change my debit card details, it took all of 1min.

Excellent service!

I completely agree with you. I have been on AOL Broadband Silver for almost 2 years now and before that I was on AOL Anytime for about 5. Despite how I had a perfectly good modem, a few weeks ago AOL decided to let me benefit from their latest offer by saying that they'd lower their price from £17.99 to £14.99 for me (constant) and send me a free Netgear DG834G wireless modem router!!! Both have arrived and I really cherrish the router - I show it off to all of my visitors. lol.

I can only go by my own experience. I started with AOL...yes just because the disk came free, and I figured they would all be roughly the same (I knew nothing about ISP's when I first got online). My friend had been on it, so I had an idea how to use it, and how to collect mail etc.

Apart from that one incident when I moved house and switched to wireless, I have had no other problems with AOL. So I'm happy to stay with them for now. You haven't configured your AOL settings to connect to a router - your PC still thinks it has to use a modem to establish its own connection to the internet. The information you need to change these settings are at the link below. I had the same problem as you, and once I had changed the settings, no signing on or anything was needed to use the internet, which is what's so great about using a modem router!

The link: http://channels.aolsvc.co.uk/homenet/article.adp?id=20050629103609990001 (note: you must be on an AOL broadband connection and be using AOL 9.0 or similar to access this page).
Make sure no drivers are installed for a modem before continuing.

What do you mean by "If you have problems with their software, don’t use it, use the modem settings to connect to the internet with your username and password!"?? How would I collect my email?

I have been with AOL since 2001. First on Dial up and then Broadband. I now have a Wireless Router, after the modem they gave me refused to work after downloading Macafee Firewall Plus (recommended by them in an email)!

The person on the phone said the modem was not damaged, and they would send me another disk, but it still hasn't arrived. I had to pay someone to come and and install a new modem/router to bypass the problems we were having installing theirs and downloaded AOL9.

Only these last few weeks I have suddenly started having problems getting online in the evenings and getting message "DNS sever not available or unreachable". I tried launching Internet explorer instead, but it also seemed unable to find the pages whilst I was getting that message. I also keep getting messages on the PC that I need to re-install AOL, which I have done several times in the last week, after not having to do it for years (since I upgraded).

Customer services is worse. I am deaf and have to use Typetalk which takes longer, so trying to ring their automated phone lines is a nightmare, and they don't have a number specifically for textphone users. Also, it takes much longer to get through to someone on online live help. I don't think the service is as good as it used to be. The person was no help when I asked why I couldn't get online all evening, but could on first attempt the morning after!

If someone knows what "DNS server unreachable or unavailable" means I'd be interested to know. I was thinking of switching to Sky broadband and getting my TV updated to digital at the same time, but reading all the reviews on here, they all seem as bad, and I can't be without internet for the weeks/months it's saying it takes to switch over.

To be fair I had no problems in the first four years of using AOL. I'm just hoping this is just a 'bad patch' they are going through and that things will improve again soon!

If you connect via a dreadful USB ADSL Modem then I'll admit that the service isn't 100% amazing. DUN (Dial-Up Networking) isn't fun to use and using a USB modem means that the service you get it very temperamental. However, if you try to care for your connection, maybe getting a router like I did, you don't come accross these problems! :)
For us people who buy something that 'does what it says on the tin' we expect it to just work, which AOL doesn't.
I'm here looking for another provider to switch to from AOL who I've been with for 2 1/2 years on dial up(which was good) and 18 months on Broadband which started not very good and has just got worse since they discontinued their FREE telephone helpline, draw your own conclusion about that!

This is a great review and is also a very accurate reflection of my own experience with AOL.
If you install a Router, then you do not need any AOL software at all. You just need your user name and password.
If you have Microsoft Office installed on your PC, then you don't even need AOL Email.
All the settings that you need for Office Outlook are readily available from the Internet.
I am now into my second year with AOL and my brother has also joined and we both think that it's really good.
I only ever had one problem with AOL and a very nice and very knowledgable lady in India corrected the problem in 15 minutes!
She even had time to discuss the difference in climate conditions between India and the UK.
How many customer service departments can claim fame to that?

I have been with AOL broadband for about 2 years. Unlike other reviewers on here, I know how to use my computer - I think other people are complaining because they don't know how to use a PC, and are not setting up broadband correctly at all. They don't read off scripts, they are just tired of people grumbling about every minute detail like all customers think they can get away with these days! AOL have been brilliant, their indian call centers are amazing - polite, friendly, and caring people in the indian call centres, who solve all your problems right away. I recently moved house, usually takes 10 working days to transfer, I asked if there was any way to speed this up, but if not I totally understand, the lady said "of course" and that she will do her very best for me... I was connected 2 days later - THIS PROVES INDIAN CALL CENTRES ARE JUST AS GOOD AS UK ONES, but a lot of grumbles I think are secretly about racism and the fact that these grumblers think they took all our jobs. They haven't. What ever happened to equal opportunities eh? Overall, AOL are brilliant. Never a problem at all, no limits, just brilliant service. Respect to AOL staff who put up with these terrible grumbling complainers who only moan because they want something for free!

Something for free? I would hardly call £29.99 amonth free! I would call it damned expensive and expect to not be kicked off every single time the phone rings or I take more than 2 minutes to write an email! However, I can expect what I like...because this is exactly the service I am currently getting from AOL. As for Indian call centres...people are not being racist. All we want is to be able to be understood by the staff that are supposed to sort out our problems. Most of the time they have no clue what we are talking about, and often it's us that is paying for the privalige of spending 3 times the amount of time needed on the phone! Get real!!

Smidsy's Response to samlawson1979's Review

Perhaps other people are complaining because (like myself) they have set up their PC precisely according to AOL instructions and eventually realise that AOL are as technically unaware as the PC user. Are people supposed to be technical gurus to get a satisfactory connection on AOL Broadband?

(Free from AOL) modem issues caused me days of broadband non-usage when I started with AOL. This meant I had to extend my Wanadoo Anytime connection. AOL technical support advised me to make checks and alterations to the setup of my PC. I got fed up with this, forgot about computer setups, and bought a broadband modem (without advice from AOL). I installed this modem and, hey presto, my broadband connection problems disappeared.

With regards to the AOL (India-based) support, I terminated my contract with AOL. A charge was made to my credit card for this. The charge was made by AOL without any notification. I called AOL's (India-based) support twice on the nature of this charge. On both occasions, I was assured that AOL had not made this charge. I sent a fax to an AOL (UK) fax. no, and 2 days later, I received an e-mail reply from AOL of the reason for AOL having made the charge denied by their India-based support centre.

I don't see myself as a grumbling computer ignoramus. I seem to have achieved the desired results by trusting more to my common sense than to the advice given by AOL.

“My opinion of AOL Broadband's service is second to...”

★★★★★

written by spoun on 11/04/2005

My opinion of AOL Broadband's service is second to none. And no, I don't work for AOL.
After you order their service it is only a matter of days until your line is checked and your modem dispatched via special delivery. And if you are upgrading it takes less than 24 hours. When you get the package it comes with a CD which is an idiot's guide to setting-up-your-broadband. Inside the box comes 2 filters and I received a BT Voyager 105 USB modem, this served well until I decided to upgrade to their "Gold" band and network the computers in my house - as it is not possible to use the home networking service with the "Silver" band.
A common misconception is "AOL only provide SUPPORT for the selected routers, unfortunately I have discovered this is wrong; using AOL on a router which is not supported does not interface with the internet well, you have to use one of their supported routers - which isn't too much of a big deal as their routers haven't once played up on me; in addition there are step by step guides of setting up each one of their supported routers online. And if you do have any problems you have free unlimited dialup access so that you can get online a read their help section.
Personally I have found their customer service to be more than acceptable, one time I was not being billed for their light usage dialup package when I thought I was on unlimited and they instantly switched me over, cleared the debt and gave me £150 credit. Also, since I upgraded my broadband I am still being billed for the "Silver" band and this is months since I upgraded. Once a rep I was speaking to didn't tell me what I needed to know, after a few hours I received an e-mail from his supervisor saying that he was sorry, and he said what I had originally asked to know.
If you are fed up of paying for broadband all you have to do is threaten to leave and they'll give you a whole 12 months FREE. No joke.
One thing which I truly like about AOL is that they are Unlimited - there are no usage restrictions, they do not prevent you from running a server although they do NOT offer static IP addresses (must have a DNS) and they do NOT prevent you from downloading of the questionable P2P Networks.
If AOL falters, it's on their software. I don't use it, as it is not necessary if you are using a router; but on other computers on my LAN I've installed it, and it has never crashed and I have always found the home page well thought out with the news, weather, e-mail and search facilities. It has to be said their software does use a lot of system resources so if you are an online gamer then it is recommended you get a LAN and do it that way.
If you are a parent who is looking to protect your children on the internet by using the AOL parental controls be safe assured they work!
If you are one of those people that just can't stand spam e-mail then AOL has pretty good e-mail control facilities.
In conclusion AOL provides a competitive service with no hidden charges which is incredibly professional. Highly recommended.

It's Response to spoun's Review

This user's experience of AOL is not typical.
The AOL interface software is a joke. Totally unnecessary, but yet required unless you have a routed connection. The software is so bulky that on the majority of customers PCs that I've worked it can take up to 5 minutes JUST for the AOL 9 software to load. Other ISPs do not require bulky front end applications to allow you to collect your email.
When it comes to routed access AOL really take the biscuit. I took a D-Link DSL-504T router to install for a customer who I discovered had signed up with AOL. After multiple attempts I've now concluded that it just won't work. The same router works fine on both Pipex and Wanadoo.
The majority of my customers who are using AOL have had so many difficulties with the service that they have been switching to other ISPs.
There tech support has been found wanting too. I know there have been a few companies who have switched their call centres to India, but this again has infuriated people. Novice users trying to rectify technical difficulties with people over the phone, is one thing, but when there is a language/accent barrier added in, it really makes things worse.
If the aim of the game was to be non standard, AOL would be the leading contender.
I’d also like to add that the only reason I’m writing this is because I’m hunting to find which router is BEST used with AOL. I came across this article and was so taken aback by it’s wholly unrealistic content that I had to sign up and help put down the facts.
Unrestricted access is available from lots of ISPs e.g. Pipex. Pipex don’t tie you down to specific routers or stick a nonsense front end software that grinds your PC to a halt.
Please people think twice before AOLing your self, you will most probably regret it later.

Sorry, I misread what you wrote. I agree - it's the same with the modems; why are only 4 compatible. The BT Voyager 105 is still good, but it would be a lot better to be able to have a wide selection rather than just a choice of 4.

kiyawhite, this is exactly my point. The choice of Router should be up to the end user, not the ISP. It's the equivalent of Vodaphone saying "No you can't use your new Motorola Razor mobile phone with us because we only allow Nokia phones. I'm sure you would agree that that would make Vodophone a joke.

I have substantial experience of many different ISPs in many different situations and AOL are still in my opinion by far the worst.

IT, if you'd read what AOL have set out for all of their customers regarding homenetworking using a router, you surely would realise that AOL only support home networking with either a Netgear or Thomson router, and not a D-Link.
