Monsieur Stanislas Cassel, a state criminal investigator, finds himself in trouble from the start in the case of Leon Pincus. At the beginning of his criminal inquiry, thugs mug and take him to an abandoned apartment block in Paris. His captors want to scare him, which they accomplish quite well by unnerving him.

Their objective is to persuade him to go easy on Louis Boucher, the major suspect in the murder of Leon Pincus. The two men were seen together shortly before the victim's body was discovered.

Stanislas is one of the most feared examining magistrates in France. He has a reputation for ruthlessness and persistence in his quest to get at the truth. The law must prevail and the guilty rooted out, regardless of the consequences.

All the while as Cassel investigates the murder, French society is in turmoil. Extreme right movements led by fanatics such as Andre Dray, Franz Streible and Rudolph Fuchs want Europe's borders closed to immigrants. These demagogues play on old fears about outsiders overrunning Europe, and they use these prejudices to inflame emotions and national pride.

This extremism mixes with another strong emotion. Those who collaborated with the Germans in the dark days of WWII are marked for revenge. Against this treacherous background, Cassel must wrestle with his own demons. He's a grandson of a World War II collaborator with the Nazis, and he must deal with that infamous past as he steadily pursues the murderer/s. As he will tragically discover, the dossier of Leon Pincus will alter life, as he knows it, forever.

Steve Haberman has created a novel that exposes the frailty of civilization. Some of his characters are not willing to forgive and forget. Others burn with vengeful desire to wreak havoc and create a world in their own twisted image.

"Murder Without Pity", will capture the reader and not let him go. The power of the plot sustains from the first page to the last. It is a novel that will bring hours of reading pleasure.

This is one book that I highly recommend.
