“Charges to make changes”

★★☆☆☆

written by Woody555 on 16/05/2020

Not the young ladies fault but I when I mentioned I’d be doing less miles and am now unemployed she said that would cost a further £9 + £25 admin fee. That is unacceptable especially when some insurance companies are refunding some of the costs due to coronavirus. Why would there be a charge for less miles. To then be told £25 admin fee in theses times and when I’d just lost my job. Looks like I’ll be shopping around at renewal time. So I left the mileage at the original level and she did at least cancel the admin fee

“Renewal”

★★☆☆☆

Rang to discuss renewal , explained the amount of competition and being a loyal customer but wouldnt budge on price. No interest in them keeping me as a customer,as the lady said more discounts given elsewhere.

“Very disappointed”

★★☆☆☆

written by Patboy1 on 18/08/2015

When I took out the policy for our vehicle the premium was competitive, however when I added an experienced driver on to the policy for 14 days it cost almost £100! It was to cover an experienced driver aged 33 with a good driving history and their own vehicle. I spoke to a manager and most of the cost was the RAC's own admin charge. Also you are not actually insured with the RAC it would appear they are really just a broker issuing policies for other companies. I feel misled and would not have taken out the policy if I had known. My previous insurer charged £30 for 30 days, i will not renew with the RAC.

“No-fault claims process deceit”

★★☆☆☆

written by handi on 11/03/2015

After a shunt from behind, I called the Claims Number. A sympathetic operator took all my details and advised me of my right to compensation for whiplash or other injuries. He then passed me to another department. After repeating all the details, it dawned on me that the first operator was a Compensation Claims firm, not the Insurance Company at all. THIS WAS NEVER MADE CLEAR. After two more calls from them, I realised it was an accident compensation solicitors firm who would take a percentage of any compensation I received. They were only interested in encouraging me to make a claim for any ache or pain I could imagine I had. HOW DARE RAC MAKE THEIR NUMBER THE FIRST TO CALL when I was vulnerable and shaken? (The actual Insurance company - Premier - was fine. It was the RAC as broker and the courtesy car firm - nothing to do with Premier - that were trying to exploit my weaknesses.) I was entitled to a courtesy car (nothing to do with Premier - this was an RAC add-on, it turned out). The car firm tried hard to trick me into hiring an expensive car that would be paid for by the other party's insurance. This was not made clear, and the distinction between a courtesy car and a hire car was deliberately blurred. (If my claim had failed, I could have been responsible for a large hire bill, but this was never mentioned.) Auto-renewal is the default position, so that if you suffer from illness or forgetfulness they just keep taking the money until you tell them to stop. I will never use RAC again. I am shocked at their sharp practices, which are in my view disreputable.

“Don't use emails to commuincate!”

★★☆☆☆

written by on 21/06/2014

Not impressed. Signed up online. then told to manage policy have to do everything over phone which takes ages to get through to, is a 0845 chargeable number and then you have no written record of progress/actions. When I did finally get an email address from them I found emails sent were acknowledged with an auto message but no one ever bothered responding. The one time I got a voice mail saying to call me BUT why didn't they just respond to the email!

“Big, but rubbish.”

★★☆☆☆

written by parrots12 on 04/04/2013

I have been a RAC member 22 years. I got quotes from an internet company for car insurance. I purchased the policy. They then asked for proof of NCD, which I provided by email. They would not accept it as it was password protected ( password provided) so they asked for insurers details etc so they could verify themselves. I did not ask them to do that. They later said it was my responsibility to provide details of NCD and they offered to contact my insurers as a favour only and chose not do do so even though it was them who suggested it. To cut a long story short: lots of problems: incompetent staff, very long waiting on telephone, communication problems, staff clearly not able to look deeper into a matter and simply look at the last bit of correspondence. Something that was so straightforward was made into something quite complex. This is worse than Indian call centres! I would never buy anything from a company that so much is intent on making things difficult for their customers. Following this have also cancelled my RAC breakdown. You may ask why I did that after 22 years of no issues there. The answer is they showed their true colours and I rather stay clear. My advise to anyone is there is better out there. Dont be fooled by their gigantic name that has been earned through the loyalty of customers who they so disregard.

“Beware DriveAssit when making a claim”

★★☆☆☆

written by on 25/06/2012

I had a minor accident and called the claims number on the RAC policy document. They (the RAC) took all the details of the accident and then passed me on to DriveAssist. It was only after DriveAssist then took all the same details they they then told me what they were doing "for me": DriveAssist want to provide me with a hire car and then they will try to recover the cost of the car from the 3rd party. However, if they have any problems with getting the money form the 3rd party, *I* will have to pay. (This is despite my policy specifically covering a courtesy car). DriveAssist insisted that my car was undriveable and that I had no choice but to get a car from them. DriveAssist THEN told me I still had to call the underwriters (in this case Aviva) to organise the repair of my car. When I spoke to Aviva and gave them all the accident details (yet again), they were great. After a few questions, they assured me that my car was driveable and I could pick up my courtesy car from the garage. They arranged for to drop off my car the and collect a courtesy car the next day.

“over priced and lack of customer service”

★★☆☆☆

written by on 08/05/2012

Have stuck with the RAC for many years but find they are too expensive now and the serv ice is very poor. eg. lack of metro offices. Motor vehicle insurance fee reduced by 10% by SGIO. Small claim $350 for home insurance took two months to receive and this was after repeated phone calls. Press button 1,2,3,4,5. Had five policies but now down to two and counting.

“£25 admin charge to change my car and they still...”

★★☆☆☆

written by on 15/06/2011

Competitive quote, and good coverage. When I rang to make a change of vehicle, they charged me an admin fee of £25 (which they took immediately) but failed to send out the new certificate despite several requests and phone calls to their 0844 premium rate number. They claimed it was an internal error! Terrible customer service and the lady said 'as a good will gesture, we won't charge you for the duplicate certificate'. Wait, you mean the duplicate certificate to replace the one you didn't send! What planet are these people on?

“I have recently received a renewal quote for £5,000...”

★★☆☆☆

written by on 07/02/2011

I have recently received a renewal quote for £5,000 after the first year where it cost me £800. The reason is because I had an accident during the first year. The accident was not my fault (I wasnt even in the car at the time) and was settled 3 months ago in full with no fault registered against me. Unfortunately RAC cannot see this on their system and need to reassess before quoting me again. This quote will not arrive before my renewal date so I am forced to swap insurance company. I am also refused access to get a new quote online because it recognises my details.

★★☆☆☆

written by vonnyd on 21/01/2011

I insured my car with RAC chepest on compare the market web site etc. However as they did not receive my Direct Debit mandate due to the postal backlog(winter conditions)they just cancelled my insurance policy without even informing me!!luckily i telephoned to check they had received it and then they told me, Yes they had received it but was 2 days late! you cant speak to a manager when you have a complaint, the call handler Jordan was great and very understanding, however had to keep putting me on hold so he could go and ask a manager, not his fault i know.
the overall reason for my comment is dont bother picking the cheapest quote you obviously get what you pay for!Direct debit should have been set up over the telephone!!

“I've had RAC insurance for two years, all fine and...”

★★★☆☆

written by mechanimal on 22/01/2009

I've had RAC insurance for two years, all fine and dandy until I bought a second hand 3 litre coupe, and the price went through the roof. I'm in my 40's with 5 years or more no claims. I queried the price with the customer service person just in case they thought my car was gold plated or something... the assistant seemed totally disinterested and couldn't seem to offer an explanation as to why the premium had rocketed or why the premium was on average £200 more expensive than competitors on like- for- like policies.
