I Purchased My Gyrodec Over 10 Years Ago And I Am
I purchased my Gyrodec over 10 years ago and I am pleased to see that it has appreciated in value!
I bought it because my previous excellent Japanese broadcast quality turntable had died and I couldn't get parts easily. The Gyrodec has been my best hi-fi buy ever! It is totally reliable, needs virtually no maintenance - once set up it seems to need no further fiddling with. I guess you may need a new belt every 10 years or so! The support from John Michel is second to none. He is always happy to chat and explain things. I have had a couple of very minor mods when I have visited his premises.(Bringing things up to date) As for the sound - obviously that will depend on the arm and cartridge I have the Rega RB 300 with the Ortofon MC25FL. I have also used the MC15 mk2, and the good old Audio Technica AT-F5 - the sound is really natural. Everything is there. Bass is not
overblown, but not lightweight either, just all notes played naturally and without effort. Midrange is clean and clear as is the high frequncy range.
Anyone who enjoyes playing records, or has a decent collection should concider this turntable. It may not be cheap - but it will last a lifetime and looks brilliant as well. The only other thing I would say is that if you have the extra cash available - then you should consider the 'Orb' also the SME arm with it - but I have been more than pleased with the sound with the Gyrodec/Rega/Ortofon combination.
I have to agree with the review as it was mine! I was Geof C. Reading back, however, it's more like 15 or 16 years now that I have had the Gyrodec. It's still brilliant. A friend asked me recently to record a record of his onto CD - there never was a CD version of it as it was his own band back in the 70's - He is very pleased with the result. In direct CD vs Record comparisons the Gyrodec often wins sounding more open and clean at the top end, and more tunefull and detailed in the Bass. How can this be?? The only thing is that with a Moving Coil pickup the frequency response extends a lot higher than the limit of CD. Even though you can't hear that high, and even though there is little or no information on the record at those frequencies - the Cd, by comparison, sound like there is a ceiling over the top of the sound. (assuming the record is in good nick!!) This deck is still available - albeit more expensive than when I purchased it. If you buy one - it will last the rest of your life and all your records will sound about as good as records can sound providing you use a good arm and cartridge with it.
