“superbly reliable”

★★★★☆

written by on 10/04/2013

I purchased my 2009 50cc 4T zip 3 years ago now as an alternative to the bus after moving to a town from the country. I have been riding bikes for 25 years plus and currently also own a CBR600RR and TDM850. When it's raining or when i cant be bothered to put on the full gear necessary to take out one of the big bikes - out comes the Zip, starts first time summer or winter, sips fuel as often as a camel requires water, under-seat storage of the Friday night take away (including the regulation 4 cans) plus free town parking. Never gone wrong or failed an MOT in the time I've owned it, keeps up with the 30mph town traffic with ease and attracts no attention unlike the RR which attracts white vans carrying hooded men while left in town center car parks in the evenings ! Seriously if i could no longer to afford to run 3 bikes, one of the big 2 would go and i would still keep the Zip - no question about it.

“Good Overall”

★★★★☆

written by gorgonqueen on 12/01/2013

Purchased my bike secondhand but it was less than a year old. Had a couple of problems with it, possibly from the neglect of the previous owner. Its a nice bike to ride, especially for someone short, old and female like me. The button start doesn't always work and I have had to kick start it once or twice, which provided great entertainment for my neighbours. Has a bit of a squeak sometimes but overall a great little bike I would recommend to anyone. Chose it because I did my CBT on it and liked it. My daughter hates it, thinks its difficult to handle, but I don't. Good value for money, takes very little fuel and oil. My is still restricted (has to be to keep warranty) but I'll get that lifted in Jan '14. Good overall bike, very pleased.

just bought 2 stroke 50cc zip £360 inc helmet gloves and lock. great wee bike for scooting around. just been using it for 40 mile round trip to work without problem. im 22 stone and although i look ridiculous, i still get 78mpg! thats full throttle all the way and probably average 40-45 mph on a straight. it is not derestricted and has standard exhaust etc. It does loose power at times probably just needs a service!

I own a Piaggio Zip 50cc (2004). Its a 2 Stroke and i have had the bike a year now. It is one of the best mopeds for value for money. I bought the bike for £550 with 3000km on it and it was still restricted. I bought a chrome Gianelli powerpipe and a set of 5.5g rollers and removed the restriction on the variator. The bike now does around 55mph on a flat and will push 60mph down a hill. Up a hill it will sit at 40mph but living in a town it is happy to weave round, through and ahead of traffic and almost pushes you to do more. This bike is air cooled and therefore isn't as quick as liquid cooled bikes like Aerox or Sr50's but is the best air-cooled bike around. It costs £8 to fill and that will last about 120+ miles averaging about 70-80MPG. The bike will accelerate 0-50 in about 13secs. The same as a standard 125cc scooter or a 1.0 Ford Ka. The bike is small but comfortable and roomy which makes it prime for trying to get the knee down round a roundabout but only on good rubbers. The bike when de-restricted will work through tyres reasonably quickly. A good set of tyres will cost about £75-100 and will cover about 7000-10000km.

What can I say? This is a GREAT scooter for a 16 year old lad. Mines 2 stroke and is de restricted with a performance air filter and a leo vince tt exhaust. This ped will top around 50mph on a straight and on a hill the other day I got 59mph. (I didnt realise it was a 30mph limit at the time but shush). Accelration on mine is weird, on a cooler engine it will accelrate great, high revs then even higher revs. It will quite easily beat cars off the line. However, on a hotter engine the revs will be low but then massively pick up.

I have uploaded a review to youtube which, form feedback, people have found very useful. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aoaEgd9bMyc Its aorund 8 minutes long as I went in depth ^^

I would recommend this bike to absolutely anyone, BUT NOT THE FOUR STROKE MODEL!

I got a zip sp for 350 and it the engine seazed in a week. Luckily i got an air cooled unit fitted and de-restricted for 250. Now it accelerates and whizzes up to 40 where its stopped by a standard exhaust. Its a buzzy ride at top end that keeps you on edge by being bumpy and dangerously soft at the same time. The handling is light and precise but doesnt feel safe at higher speeds. Its got a glove box which is handy for nothing apart from glove because its small. The boot is big but has a seat rim the makes the helmet visor scratch. It suprisingly economical and has a good size tank. Despite its small niggles i love it, because it suits my riding style and offer fun for a cheap price.

all my friends thought it was funny me buying a 2010 paiggio zip for 1200, but after I got it derestricted, I got 50 down the duel carriageway down a slight hill. I put a technegas sports exhaust with light polini rollers and i got just over 60, put off the line not many 50s can keep up. It looks great in white but it gets little marks easy.

written by on 29/01/2010

Hiya, i have an old piaggio zip, W reg (and for those who dont know what year that is... 2000 :P). I have had the bike for about 5 months now and yeah a few little things have gone wrong with it (but what do you expect for a 10 year old bike). when i bought it, it had already been de-restricted and amazingly only done 3290 miles :O. I had to put new rollers in last month as the old ones were worn. I bought some racing ones for about £15 (thinking the bike would go faster) i think but anyway, i wouldnt advise it, they are bad, my bike is now... louder, uses ALOT more petrol and believe it or not... slower :S. But enough moaning, it is the BEST bike i have ever had and i love it to bits, i have got about 46mph on the flat (i need a longer road to see what it can really do) and about 53 downhill. I would recommend this bike to ANYONE and i am only 5ft so it is the perfect sized bike for me. the only down side to it is the petrol useage and the under seat storage, the underseat storage is a little small for my helmet but i get around carrying it so no biggy there, but the petrol :/ i am filling up everyother day and it is stupid amounts like £1.50 WHY PIAGGIO DIDNT YOU MAKE A BIGGER TANK lol. anyway i think i have said enough haha, i can still say loads about my bundle of joy but i dont want to bore you haha. one last thing, if you are thinking of getting moped, i would recommend a piaggio zip as your first one :) thanks for reading

Anthony

any questions on how to de-restrict or even fitting parts (i study mechanics at college you see :P) i am happy to help. my email is below!

I am 17 and the Piaggio Zip is my first motor vehicle.
build quality is impressive, and I was surprised by the power that comes out of its 50cc motor.
my only qualm is that its 'underseat storage for full-face helmet' is not infact enough to fit a 'large' helmet (blame my big noggin).

“Better than anything else in its price range! ”

Better than anything else in its price range!
I got my Piaggio Zip from my uncle. It has 30 000km ,but drives good as new. Now i added extra 1000km since i started using it 6 months ago. What it lacks in speed and power, gives back in low fuel consumption and agility.

If you live in urban enviroment with mild weather conditions and mostly use scooters to reach nearby destinations then ZIP is perfect for you.

If the outside temperature gets too low, then you might have problems with starting the engine. Also, i had a problem with my headlight. Voltage regulator broke down once and caused light bulb to malfunction.

i have just got a zip rs ( one of the 250 ltd edition ones ) it's basically a zip sp which uses the hiper 2 stroke water cooled 50cc motor same as the one's found in the gilera runner and some nrg's but obviously the zip is A LOT lighter than either of those bikes so it will out accelerate them both. the handling is very good and is easyly more than a match for my nrg: wind protection is poor and due to the bike's weight you get blown around a bit in side wind's, although it's size is a bonus when you'r traffic filtering

written by sduboy on 24/01/2009

i bought this Piaggio Zip ped for 450 and its great. its restricted and i can easily reach 40 mph so i don't have cars overtaking. i have gotten 45 out of it on a flat straight road. but lights are poor in the dark and you rely on other drivers on the road to guide yourself. it doesn't have a petrol indicator just a red light to tell you to fill up. but looks good for a piaggio
Good Acceleration
looks good
good economy wise
good underseat storage Bad points are it only has a light to tell you when to fill up and indicators are a llitle dodgy

written by zippynippy on 06/10/2008

A 50cc scooter that is very good value for money. I've had my zip 50 4stroke for almost 2 years and used it for commuting 6 miles everyday to work in central london. I regularly get 100 mpg (miles per gallon). In central London traffic I am usualy faster than much bigger bikes which can't cut through traffic. Now my commuting trip is 16 miles a day with going through A roads and must get a bigger bike.... I'll miss my Zip 50

written by on 13/09/2008

I own an 08 plate 4T zip and have already done 2300km and I havent had a problem with it yet that wasnt my fault, it isnt the fastest scooter but that is because it is still restricted, but I generally get 30mph out of it, it is faster than my friends scooters uphill though which is good. it is a brilliant scooter for a beginner with it being cheap and very reliable and in my opinion a beautiful scooter.

My Piaggio Zip is an 04 two stroke its great only done 1,000 miles and runs like a watch it would be nice to go a little faster it did 32 max and it sounds like its going to explode but it has never let me down . It has that expensive look also in the electric blue colour . Really like the idea of motorbikes now and will after a year go on to a 100- 125 model something a bit sportier.

I  removed the speed restrictor off my Piaggio Zip 49cc scooter. For a few months it has been going fine but recently when I urn the throttle full on it appear to be choking and not responding and lack any power. Can it be that it needs a different CDI unit? Everything else looks fine. I have put in a new plug the leads are or the carb is fine and clean. Any advice would be appreciated.
