★★★★★

written by vivmack on 21/03/2006

We have been to Thudufushi Superior several times and have found it to be one of the best holidays we have ever had. The All Inclusive package does mean ALL inclusive, with the reasonable exceptions such as, champagne, lobster and according to one unsatisfied customer, JD is not part of the package (there are other alternatives, of course). The criticism left by the guest who found the Monarch flights to be the highlight of his holiday, is less than constructive. Accommodation is exceptionally good and so is the service provided by the staff, including the bar staff. The diving is fantastic and the overall management of the island is of very high standard. It's worth every penny!

We visited Thudufushi Superior for our honeymoon and it was perfect. The surroundings are beautiful, just like paradise.

The food was very good with a variety to pick from each night. Everyone on this island is friendly and makes you feel welcome. The rooms are basic but comfortable with good air conditioning system, they are cleaned twice daily by your own 'room boy' who maintains an excellant standard.

This island is well worth visiting, you have to see to believe and we will definatly return again in the future.

★★★★★

written by eli123 on 04/11/2004

We arrived at Thudufushi Superior via sea plane, I was dreading that bit! I had no need to it was fantastic! If you go to an island with a boat transfer then make sure you go on a sea plane it's the best was to see the Maldives. We were met by locals and reps who greeted us warmly; on arrival in reception we were offered welcome refreshment. After a brief chat we were shown to our beautiful room and shown how to work the safe, air con etc.
The views from our room were breath taking for the first couple of days all the books I had taken got left!
The food was excellent, varied and plentiful! You would have to be very fussy not to find something you liked and if that was the case I'm sure one of the many chefs would sort something out. They will even do chips on request.
The island is small you could walk round it in 8mins but that suited us just fine. It is also very quiet and peaceful, that is until the night time entertainment. You can take or leave that, we joined in a few nights and had a great time the staff work so hard and are highly motivated.
They have a doctor available should you be so unfortunate as to need one, I was and I can't praise her enough, nothing too much trouble any time she saw me she inquired after my health.
All in all what a fantastic holiday the worst thing, that we had only booked for 10 nights 3 weeks would have been better its the first holiday we've had where we weren't ready to come home.

written by elliotb on 22/09/2004

Just returned from Thudufushi, we had heard horror stories about the flights but thought these were unfounded, ok seats were a little tight but not too bad, plane staff were friendly, worth upgrading if you get the chance. Room 14 is the one to go for, just been updated, all the others have seen better days, especially the bathrooms, also ask for a detached room, next doors snoring kept me awake! The island is owned by an Italian and this shows, definite feeling of second class citizens. The worst bit for me was the booze, I drink wine or JD's, wine isn't available from the Beach Bar so after lunch you have to wait until 7pm to get a glass and JD's are charged, we were also told we couldn't take bottles of wine back to our room.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but I hope prospective guests of Thudufushi Resort will not be put off by this man`s negative view. After all, would you really want to take note of someone who loved the flight ( even with tight seats) to the beautiful sea and beach on Thudufushi ?
We have stayed on the Island a few times and are returning soon and have always found all the staff ( even the bar staff !) friendly and charming. The food is excellent, with a wide variety. Lots of Guests come from all over Europe and so it has a cosmopolitan feel to the Resort, and not a Little England atmosphere.
Wine is available at all times at the main bar ( 15 yards from the beach bar) and just about every drink other than JD is free !
I have never seen anyone else, ever, drink to much on the island, and the Italian Owners have made the atmosphere welcoming and friendly and First Class.
So, if you are thinking of going to Thudufushi, do not be put off by the negative review, try it for yourself and then add a comment to this Review Centre
Enjoy !

I have been seriously considering going to the island this year to escape the rat race and was concerned when I read the very negative first review. Especially as the island description and photos I've seen on the Internet made it my first choice in the Maldives within my price range.
The other reviews gave a better perspective and I have to agree that someone who is more concerned with aircraft seats than the positives of a tropical island must give cause for concern about their review.

My partner and I have been to Thudufushi many times and return year after year not only because it is paradise on earth, but because it is relaxed, welcoming, cosmopolitan (we meet up with friends from Italy, Germany and UK) with excellent and friendly service from the staff.
The food is always of the highest standard (I can certainly recommend the curries!) and the chefs will prepare what you want - within reason.
The bar, room and restaurant staff are engaging and helpful to say the least.
We are going for three weeks this year as two just isn't long enough! Although we normally fly Monarch from Gatwick, this year we are flying Emirates from LHR with a stop-over in Dubai as I do find the Monarch flights a bit tight even in Premium Class.
I can't recommend this resort high enough and give it 10/10!

I, too, strongly disagree with this guy's opinion of such a beautiful gem in the Indian Ocean. We spent a wonderful week of total relaxation on Thudufushi-recovering from the hectic visit to Sri Lanka in Sept 2004.
Everything about the Island was brilliant, we were not even daunted by the weather-sitting on our patio watching the rain pouring-wearing beachwear-having leisurely afternoon drink-completely cut off from the rat race.
A desert island with all the luxuries!!! sheer heaven.
Food excellent, staff very friendly-without exception. Made to feel like one big happy family.
Went snorkling for first time ever, now completely hooked.
Can't wait to go back !!
Everyone is entitled to their own opinion - and some people cannot be pleased no matter what! if you are looking for total relaxation - Thudufushi has it perfected!

“Thudufushi Superior - We had a fantastic time in...”

written by sally01 on 27/05/2004

Thudufushi Superior - We had a fantastic time in Thudufushi and would definitely recommend it to anyone thinking of travelling to the Maldives.

The island itself is wonderful, everything you could wish for in a total relaxation holiday. One of the things which makes Thudufushi so special are the little extras, such as a complimentary laundry service, free mini bar, even small bottles of sun cream in your room!

The rooms are spacious and very comfortable with a huge king size bed. The bathroom is half open air, with the shower outside.

The beaches surrounding the island are very pretty and the reef is excellent for snorkeling. There is very little to do here apart from relax, snorkel and enjoy the wonderful views.

The restaurant has wide variety of food on offer which is always very good quality.

I have nothing bad to say about this resort at all, and I will definitely be visiting again.

“It is easy to loose sight of the importance of...”

★★★★★

written by Dylan Jenear. on 04/07/2003

It is easy to loose sight of the importance of relaxation and taking time out to just be in the moment with the pace at which modern life is lived within the UK, especially London. However, the serene utopia that is the Maldives, affords the opportunity to restore that all-important internal equilibrium and feel absorbed, not by work and other points of stress, but by experiencing a feeling of calm, induced by the seclusion that this tropical oasis provides.
The island of Thudufushi is set in the South Ari Atoll, which, owing to location, enjoys an extra hour of sunshine compared to some parts of the Maldives. Thudufushi is a naturally beautiful setting with elegant palm tress, white sand and the amazing Indian Ocean just yards away at your disposal; the ocean is calm, warm and the clearest you will find anywhere in the world. The marine life is unprecedented in the Maldives, ensuring that this is the very best place for scuba diving and snorkeling. Whether you wish to simply relax and soak up the sun, or take part in the array of daily activities that are available - this is paradise personified. The food is outstanding, as are the delicious cocktails, notably the Thudufushi Special. All fully-inclusive resorts will offer you a minibar, cigarettes, imported alcohol and a laundry service at an extra cost - not Thudufushi - this is part of your "all-in" package, which means you only need spend if you opt for certain excursions or fancy some fresh crab, or lobster, which - by the way - you can choose your self from the aquarium in the centre of the island. The accommodation is not overly luxurious, but has a distinct character that adds to the experience, with an outdoor bathroom making showers that bit more exciting, and a comfortable decking outside your bungalow, allowing you to sit comfortably, gazing at the ocean. The "no news no shoes" concept is unique and the staff are very attentative, ensuring that problems are resolved promptly. The entertainment and activities are well balanced and ensure that everyone is adequately catered for. One word to summarise: 'visit'.

I have found individuals comments really helpful in getting down to a 'shortlist' for visitng the maldives in march 2005....however if anyone has any updates on Thudufishi, Makunudu or Lhaviyani Atoll Kuredo Island it would help in making my final choice !

Jenear's Response to Dylan Jenear.'s Review

Hi Adam,
don't worry about any bad experiences you may have had, this place, Thudufushi, is the cat's pyjama's.
Bath Robes and towels are changed daily; they even have complimentary sun tan lotions (only small bottles so do still take some), shower gels and shampoo, etc.
Do not worry about beach towels either - they're provided free of charge.
I would recommend taking a travel iron/hair dryer. On the subject of ironing, they offer a laundy service - free of charge - where by your clothes return cleaned and pressed after a day or two.
I would strongly recommend travelling light, as you will be surprised how little you use clothes-wise. The island tends to be very casual, while still being smart, if that makes sense.
In terms of footwear, you will only use sport sandals and flip-flops. I took 2 pairs of shoes and they did not come out of the suitcase once!
Everyone goes with the "no news no shoes" concept after a couple of day's, which means literally that: you wander about without any footwear on - there's no need.
On the subject of a bottle opener. if I remember rightly, the min-bar - which is free of charge - carrys cans only. But if you do need a bottle opener they will provide you with one.
A word of advice, if you are stocking up on duty free drinks - which I advise against - they will be retained upon arrival at Male and you will have to collect them upon departure. They check all luggage as standard.
You can get cheap drinks on the flight home, which also saves you the hassle of carting them about
Assuming you are travelling with Sri-Lanka airlines, you will find the on-board prices are far cheaper than those within the airports duty free outlets.
As there are no locally produced drinks as such, all drinks - apart from champagne - are free of charge on the island, whether the vodka's Smirnoff or Vladivar; or whether the beer is Stella Artois, or a brand from a local country, like Gold Label which is from Sri-Lanka.
If you smoke, you will be pleased to know that the cigarettes are free!
The outdoor shower is a treat; the Robinson Crusoe excursion is highly recommended!
There is no T.V, therefore I would recommend taking a small sound system. Snorkelling and scuba-diving equipment is free; as are canoes.
Be careful if you go out on a canoe in the afternoon, as when the tide goes out the coral is effectively elevated and you may have some navigational problems.
Oh, stock up on camera films (if applicable) and underwater camera's as they are very expensive on the island.
One last thing, when you board the sea plane, try to get on first or last, as the engine is very noisy and if you are seated in the middle you will get the full effect of it.
Enjoy!

I've just started packing for my trip to Thudufushi and wondered if anyone could offer details on what was available in the rooms. For instance hair dryer, bath robes, iron, bottle opener etc.. having been caught out before in such places I was hoping for some advice.

If you need any info that may not be available on some websites, you can check out Plan Hotel Group's website at http://www.planhotel.ch/thudu/

Plan Hotel own Thudufushi and its sister island Athuruga. When I travlled to Thudufushi I booked through Kuoni (www.kuoni.co.uk), whom, at the time, offered the two resorts on an exclusive basis.
However, from what I can glean, the islands can be booked through a wider range of tour operators now.
There is not much difference between the Athuruga and Thudufushi - there both stunning!

Perhaps the main difference would be that Athuruga is slightly better for snorkelling (I would strongly recommend snorkelling with baby Black-Tip Sharks, as they have no teeth), while Thudufushi is more renowned for scuba diving.

However, you can arrange day trips from one island to the other, as they are within relatively close proximity, so you will not have to miss out on anything.

Hi Adam.
In response to your question regarding Thudufushi, the island is so small that it only takes 7 or 8 minutes to walk right around; therefore, there's no need to worry about where you are situated. Regarding the room categories, Thudufushi operate a policy where by all rooms are of the same standard, so there's no deluxe, junior etc. However, you will not be disappointed; the outdoor shower is a super feature, but you will have to be prepared for no T.V. I'd suggest that you take a small sound system, as my partner and I did and it is the ideal place to chill out on the beach outside your villa with some tunes. The way the villa's are situated, it works out that the area of beach outside your villa is effectively your own, which is excellent. They use a substance that ensures no mozzies are lurking which is great; but do take some repellant, as you may end up going to Fisherman Island and there's lots of mozzies there. I strongly recommend the Robinson Crusoe excursion.

We have chosen Thudufushi for our honeymoon next year and by the way you describe it we have chosen well. It's nice to get actual experiences and opinions rather than what's descibed in a brochure which can be sometimes selective like Estate Agents
