“I've had my Suzuki GN 125 for nearly 2 years. Its a...”

★★★☆☆

written by on 09/06/2009

I've had my Suzuki GN 125 for nearly 2 years. Its a 1998 and has done around 35k miles.
In my eyes its been an absolute trashmonkey. It seems every week something else goes wrong, most recently a complete engine refurb which cost a lot and was only done because I thought it would be cheaper than a new bike entirely. I'm not sure it will. The wiring started to fail and numerous other repairs have eventually left me with a bike costing more on repairs than it did on the price of buying it in the first place. And that wasnt cheap.
But its still a lot of fun and apart from having to walk everywhere, and i live in the country, when it breaks down I dont have much of a problem with it. Just dont expect too much on the power front; its definitly a cruiser, not a sports.

“Handling and braking on the Suzuki GN 125 are Good....”

Handling and braking on the Suzuki GN 125 are Good. All those things are if you service it in the right time. For the Disk brake problem, I fixed a new grooved disk and the problem vanished! Suzuki should thank me for" Tweaking" this issue which is a common problem among GN and GS 125 Series. Oh and another thing, please put in a fuel indicator, because I keep on riding until the Bike stops (and then I end up walking)
If you are short of money and need a reliable bike, this is the one.

“I have owned this Suzuki GN 125 bike for about a year...”

★★★★☆

I have owned this Suzuki GN 125 bike for about a year and a half and have done about 9000kms. In general it is a good bike - good ride and handling, it's nice and light with a low centre of gravity, light controls, good lights, clear instrumentation and yes, it even sounds good too.

However I have had a few problems. At about 7000kms the oil pump driveshaft, which is plastic, broke, and the engine seized; this has scored the bearings, which is particularly a problem as the camshaft bearings do not have shells and are milled directly into engine head and rocker cover. This issue still hasn't been resolved! Fortunately it actually runs quite well even with the bearings like this!

The front brake is weak and I recall after each ride for the first few months I had this bike, I would get off and my right hand would be aching from pulling the lever so hard. The rear drum brake however is strong and of good weighting.

The carb also seems to change mixture as the engine gets hot. If you travel at anything over 80km/h for more than 5 minutes or so, power will gradually decrease and when you come to a stop, the engine will have trouble idling.

The tyres are a hard compound and have excellent wear (in almost 10000kms the front tyre has worn almost imperceptably!) which causes problems with grip in cool weather or wet roads; front braking has to be very progressive to prevent lock up in these conditions. This could probably be solved by upgrading the rubber.

Generally though for fine weather commuting the bike is excellent fun, light and flickable and gives spritely acceleration at around town speeds, with very low fuel consumption - you should get around 300kms (200 miles) to a tank. The chromework can take some looking after though.

I bought a GN 125 for my wife to learn on. Although the bike is in fairly good condition it's very slow on acceleration and struggles to reach 70KM/h on a flat road. I know this is not a sports bike but most people get upto 100km/h. Any suggestions please?

I am considering buying a GN 125 (2012), but see that the model was 'discontinued' in 2001. Was a new version of the GN 125 launched after 2001, and are there significant differences between these models?
