We had previously had another Concept2 rowing machine. The retraction mechanism on it broke, but it was old.

My rowing club recently bought a Concept 2 Model D, but it is only used when the older models are all taken. The handle may well be an ergonomic improvement on the last, but is to unlike a sweep-oar blade to use for training. Similarly the motion is not as sharp as the previous Concept2, and is less like that on water. This model seems to be designed with the broader demographic in mind: it may be excellent for gym users & the great unwashed, but rowers would do well to avoid forking out this amount of dough for what is essentially a triumph of design over substance.

While on holiday in Vermont last autumn the owner of the lodge where we were staying mentioned that Concept2 were only based 10 miles from where we were staying (as we were talking rowing).

<br>We went up and they showed us around the factory - friendly people. At the end they showed us the test area for the Model D's and I mentioned the criticism of the review above. 'Oh Yes, that would be the Hammers' was the reply. So I assume this meant that the 'hammer technique' outlined in the review above is sub-optimal on the water as well! As a single sculler I find little to criticise about the Model D.

The handle of the model d is actually closer in width (handle width being the essential difference to the model c) to the rowperfect, which most rowers would agree is a closer simulation to rowing.
<br>
<br>If you want a real rowing feeling, then get out on the water in a scull, otherwise this new machine is fine for giving you the same workout as the previous model, plus its quieter and has a better monitor.
