“Room for improvement in certain areas”

★★★☆☆

written by Dalia82 on 12/06/2015

I booked 5 apartments for my family to celebrate my 80th birthday.I live about 12 miles away and have 9 great grandchildren,so wanted my whole family and as they were from 5 weeks old to 12 yrs old had the idea to have an apartment for each family. The apartments were fine..the only criticism I had was that the upstairs ones had spaces between the panels on the balcony which a young child could squeeze through and fall.I think it would be safer with mesh covering each space up. There was no facility for breastfeeding a young baby privately..my granddaughter had to go to the toilet to breastfeed . I used the Java lounge for a sandwich lunch and found it expensive and too small to cater for a big number ,there were over 20 of us. Also I had to have cash, and paying for lunch for everyone and then in the restaurant for dinner was upsetting as had to go to the Link machine ,paying £1.95 to withdraw money...why couldn't we use a debit card which will only withdraw money if there is sufficient funds to cover.....the restaurant bill for the dinner was almost £200 and then drinks in the Queen Vic.so had to spend money each time to get. If you can sort out these problemsI think people would spend more if they can use a card and maybe put it on a tab. A lot of folk don't carry large amounts of cash these days so think you could get more up to date. The staff were very friendly and the apartments clean.

“Fantastic for kids, accommodation a big let down”

★★★☆☆

written by mad_thatter on 11/06/2012

Went with my friend, my 2 girls age 6 and 9 and her 2 boys the same age, half term week 4th june -8th June 2012, dun holiday. Our check in time was 4pm, was told to go into the club and oh my god, the queues were horrendous, we didn't wait as was told at least an hour and a half wait time!!! Decided to go and get the kids some dinner from the take away fish and chip shop on site, the queue again was terrible, waited 30mins before leaving as getting nowhere - very understaffed, only 2 people serving and nothing ready and cooked!! After eventually checking in at 6pm, we went to our chalet, we had upgraded to classic. When we openened the door and went inside we were shocked at how dirty it was, looked like it hadn't been cleaned in months. Even one of our 9 year olds commented on the dirt!!! The bath was disgusting, it was thick with dust and hair, the bath panel was coming off and the toilet seat not fitted properly, the wardrobe in one of the bedrooms had no door and the skirting boards were think in dust, also had he cobwebs hanging on the ceilings - know we got it cheap as a sun holiday, but still expect it to be clean!! couldn't walk around with no shoes on as feet would be black. Also table really sticky and the chairs (desk like chairs) were dirty!! One thing that was clean was the mattresses on the beds. Decided one evening to eat in the restaurant - this was also dirty, the chairs were covered in food and crumbs and tables also not clean, we were first in so hadn't been cleaned since lunch. We were 1st in the queue but when the doors opened everyone just pushed past and ran like mad people, food wasn't great, had a roast but not very nice at all .....not much choice. We found that there was not much to do outside on site, there were quad bikes, fun bikes and a playground. The swimming pool was very basic just had 3 little slides at the side, kids were disapointed as were expecting a little more - changing rooms were packed so hard to get changed and only 3 showers, so again time spent queuing. The trick and treat shop in the club was not open, not sure if this was due to refurbishment and the diner in the club wasn't open either. The one thing that was excellent was the blue coats and the entertainment, amazing and the kids loved it!! each night was a different act and the kids were kept entertained well into the late night. The blue coats were great during the day too in the club, they played games and had a croc party which the kids loved, great as it was raining :) They also got to meet all the characters during the day and could have a pic done for £4.99 The club was massive as was arcade, it was safe for the kids to go on their own and play - there were 2 clubs but we only went into the fun factory - sometimes hard to find a table but plenty of chairs overall, we all had a great time, just the state of the accommodation really that let it down - it's been refurbished so i would dread to think what it looked like before!!!!! Would we go back?? probably for the kids and the entertainment but we would upgrade to club !!!

“terrible chalets ,lets it down”

written by red2312 on 25/04/2012

when we checked in i was given keys and went to our chalet ,its was disgusting ,the sofabed couch was grotty and older that the ark, the only thing to sit on was a plastic chair like in waiting rooms, the bedroom stunk of dirt and damp and the carpet was the worst i have ever seen ,i tried to open the window but the handle broke of in my hand, i had to go out shopping to buy new bedding and pillows because it all stank ,the bathroom was manky and the toilet wouldnt flush properly ,if the weather hadnt been so nice it would have been the holiday from hell, the shows were good and the food was ok but nothing about the place was excellent and i wouldnt advise anyone to pay full price ,we got our break there with the offers in newspapers ,if id paid a few hundred pounds i would have wanted a refund ,even the luxury apartments were only basic if you want to pay out a lot of money for a family holiday go to butlins

“pontins was great for us”

written by suedee on 09/10/2011

we have just got back after another great weekend at Pontins. We stayed in a club room myself ,my husband ,father who has had a 5 valve bypass and disabled mother. we found the room clean and bedding and towels clean. the staff was realy good getting around the site was great all flat for my mum on her buggy yes the main hall smelt a bit but thats years of drink spilt on it and kids dropping drinks and sweets. its a camp not a 5 star hotel entertament was great of a night << seen robbie williams >>> and the staff work so hard nothing was to much trouble for them. we paid 79 pounds for fri and sat night that works out 10 each a night where would you get a break for that anywhere else with a swimming pool shows and room nowhere ! you get what you pay for and we thought it was fab . yes camp needs updateing but give them time but remeber when done price goes up. as i said you get what you pay for . Pontins was well run by underpaid staff who work realy hard.

“Pontins Prestatyn”

★★★☆☆

written by 2e0raf on 06/08/2011

Having read the reviews i was a little apprehensive about going, once we got there we were directed to reception to check in, as we were staying club we got to check in for 2 pm, once we got our chalet keys we went to the chalet to find a bog standard chalet, i had a servicable kitchen a seperate bedfoom with 2 single beds and the famous bed setee, which is uncomfortable, but that is my only complaint, The evening entertainment was subperb, there was a late night cabaret every night, they had a quiz night and a kids cabaret they also put on a cabaret called The MJ Experiance which again was exelent. Yes the park looks a little dated but there is loads of renervation going on. There is a quiet beach 5 mins walk from the park with a couple of cafes and a pub and a amusment arcade. Rhyl is only 4 mils away or about 10 mins by car. Overall i enjoyed my stay at Pontins Prestatin i would reccomend people to go there, dont read to much into the bad reviews, it's not as bad as people make out.

“just got back from a long weekend break fri-mon....”

★★★☆☆

written by on 25/07/2011

just got back from a long weekend break fri-mon. Arrival was abit confusing as the reception is not were you book in but join a long queue in the club room for the keys.We went to the chalet which we expected to be basic anyway it had recently been cleaned, there was mold around the tiles on the shower/bath and the floor didnt look like it had been moped corners etc...i took my own cleaning products to be on the safe side as we had a 2 year old with us(hands everywere)The kids were playing in the bedroom and moved the beds we then discovered the carpet had only been cleaned in the areas which were in sight underneath and sides were full of fluff! The kitchen area was clean enough, cooker, fridge, crockery and cutlery. The pull out sofa had seen better days and was realy uncomfortable to sleep on as were the duvets and pillows(which hadnt been laundered as there was staining)We found that entertainment kids clubs etc were not made very clear apart from notices in the main area, maybe putting these into the welcome packs would help,as we were abit confussed as to what we had paid for exactly because the park is now open to public for free.We found the areas around the park abit tatty and it looked like was up for a refurb,we visited 'The Queen Vic' pub for an evening meal which i have to say was quite disgusting for an eating venue the food and service wasnot upto scratch and didnt feel very clean, tables were full of used plates glasses etc for over an hour and it wasnt too busy for staff to cope with.Having visited Pontins many times as a child i realy wanted the experience to follow through for my kids but was a litte dissapointed. I would like to see the camp refurbed now under new owners and hope this happens the entertaintment, blue coats sing-a-longs and the kids club is all very dated "come on Pontins get in the 20th century" ppl will love you a whole load more!

i went to pontins presatyn for the 3 days of the summer break with my wife and my 2 kids. When i checked there was no -service for a smile- from the staff and no enjoy your holiday. The derections to the appartment was ok. When we went to the appartment the state was horrible. Dirty catpet, portible tv, lumpy sofa bed and un clean kitchen with a half eaten pie with a spoon. please pontins clean up your act with the calets. The entertaiment was great for the kids. From magic acts for the kids to singers. But they need to improve the adult nightime entertaiment because they allways do the same game - 8 people having to find stuff from the audiencee . Over all a great holiday with fun with the blue coats but need to imporove the appartments

I'm going to be honest this camp isn't a luxury five star place but its a good place to base urself to visit areas around prestayn . The chalets are basic but fine to stay in ok the pull down sofa is bad to slleep on but I slept on it without pulling it down into bed and slept fine . I allways cook my own food which I buy in rhyl or prestatyn and I allways go carls chippy in prestatyn which is great . I'm out off camp every day come back for teatime and eat my own food then go to queenvic then lunars bar it does get stuffy in there though they havnt got cieling fan or aircon . I just pop outside now n then for cool air . I book the cheap breaks Mon to Fri I go budget but they allways upgrade me free because of the sun hols people who get our in the budget . I get my holiday for cheaper than the sun hol people because they have to pay service charges on top so my tip go prestatyn but don't go with sun hols it workweek out dearer I pay between 75 pnds to 99pnds for 4 people . Don't listen to bad nasty reviews go and make the most of ur freedom some people arnt so luky to have a break go prestayn I am every year may and July

★★★☆☆

written by soberjudge on 14/10/2010

we went here through the 9.50 holidays in the Sun, yes the place is 70's shabby, but the staff work damned hard, we went there to give the kids a break and they absolutely loved it, thoroughly enjoyed the show on Saturday night (so did my husband and myself) the bar prices were quite steep, but that would be my only complaint, although this does prevent beer guzzling parents from becoming incapable of taking care of their kids! the location is lovely. If you are going to run some steam out of your kids then they will enjoy.I was really worried about the cleanliness but it was fine. Would highly recommend Carls chippy - yum, go and enjoy yourselves, its a family place, feels safe too

Just had a 5 day break at Pontins Prestatyn. Overall it was fine the chalet was ok not spotless but ok. Everything worked fine the beds were ok and the bed linen clean. To be on the safe side we washed all the crockery etc and wiped down the worksurfaces but nothing was really dirty. We had such a good time we are going back again later in the month. Entertainment was average no names but we are out of season now . Can only assume some cleaners are better than others or maybe its the state the chalets are left in if its tidy and relatively clean then they have time to clean properly if its left like a dustbin then all the cleaning time is used clearing up not cleaning they only have a short time to turn a chalet round.

“Just returned from a lovely family holiday at Pontins...”

★★★☆☆

written by on 07/09/2010

Just returned from a lovely family holiday at Pontins Prestatyn. After reading reviews was very dismayed. Went armed with cleaning agents, sleeping bags etc but only needed sleeping bags as bed settee was so uncomfortable. Entertainment was a bit repetative as we were there for several days however although slot machine area was of usual tacky standard, restaurant, shops and entertainment rooms were lovely, nothing like had be written about. We were half board and food vouchers were provided for each day and each meal for each person valued at £2.00 child breakfast, £6.00 adult breakfast and evening meal £6.00 child and £12.00 adult. We found we could have done with a bit more for breakfast and perhaps a little less for the evening as we had ample for evening meal, enough so that we used to purchase drinks for the rest of the evening. I could have been picky with rooms as the chalets are as others mention dated, rooms are sparse, but adequate. Swimming pool was clean however needs updating but proved lots of fun. Blue coats were lovely with the children.

written by on 06/09/2010

We have just returned from a rock and roll break at this resort which we thoroughly enjoyed. Although there did not appear to be any aircon in the Lunar Ballroom where the event was staged.

We booked a basic chalet. The chalets are spacious and looked clean however I found the floor to be very dirty (I spilled something in the bathroom and had to clean the floor),and there were stains on the duvets and curtains.I'm not a cleaning freak but I bought a bottle of bleach to make sure the bath and toilet were clean.

Yes I would go there again but only on the specialist breaks..only because I love rock and roll.

written by dibbs30 on 01/09/2010

we boked a 7night holiday at pontins 14th- 21st august, we have been before and had a good time, but this time didnt enjoy it so much.
rooms are very dated dirty & uncomfortable, after buying domestos & sponges & an hours cleaning i was happy to put up with the chalet. although my wet swimming towels were stolen from outside my door.
evening entertainment is very good ,the blue coats work hard to give you a good time and entertain the children, theres not many free activities on during the day for the children.
before booking i was told by pontins that ready for august there would be a flume installed at the pool & a newly refurbished resaurant, the flume was none existant and the restaurant wasnt finished !.
we ate in the beachcombers restaurant and the queen vic both of which did serve ok meals.
i was going to book a newyears break but after my august week at pontins i definitly wont be spending new year there.

“Me and my daughter visited Pontins Prestatyn at the...”

★★★☆☆

written by on 16/08/2010

Me and my daughter visited Pontins Prestatyn at the begininning of July 2010, and although there were some bad points, we had an incredible holiday.
As you may have gathered if you have read other reviews, pontins isn't really known for its great cleaning skills, and rightly so. The apartment, although it wasn't dirty, had a grubby carpet and stained walls, and a friend did find childrens underwear underneath their bed, amongst other things.
Saying that, the entertainment was most definitely the best part of the site. The bluecoats were very funny and outgoing and great with the little kids. There was two separate bars which both had things going on from around 6 o clock in the evening until 2 o clock the following morning. The only problem was that my daughter, although 15 and perfectly capable of playing games like bingo and 'name that tune', couldn't join in with these because they were 18+ games.
The only problem was, when we visited, Pontins was a building site, as they were building a new pool, ice skating rink and cafe, so it wasn't pretty. We would have liked to have been told before we booked that the site would be like this. Anyone who does want to go, I suggest at least going in summer 2011 to make sure everything is finished.
Overall, it was a fantastic holiday as everyone at the site is so friendly and the entertainment was incredible, with the arcades as well if all else fails. The cleanliness and the failure to inform us about the state of the site before we got there has brought my rating down, but I still would recommend Prestatyn Pontins to family and friends.

★★★☆☆

written by yvonne holden on 12/08/2010

We returned from a week at Prestatyn, with our 2 sons. We had to be moved from our first chalet as the bathroom was so dirty. The sofa bed in the lounge was the most uncomfortable thing ever, we ended up just putting the matress on the floor! The smell as you walk into both of the entertainment rooms and the snooker room was disgusting, all it needs is replacing the carpets. I must say the staff and entertainment were brilliant, the concept is there but the accommodation needs upgrading. Don't beleive what you read in the brochure, no new swimming pool and no roller rink. We have been to all other Pontins site and I would seriously reconsider Prestatyn again.

“just returned from a pontins and i would never return...”

★★★☆☆

written by on 07/08/2010

just returned from a pontins and i would never return to this site- we have been visiting brean for 14 yrs and thougth we would venture to prestatyn!- we were in a chalet on upper floor- even after ringing and requesting a ground floor as my soon is in a cast after a seroius accident- the chalet was cleanish and we just wiped sides down etc just for piece of mind- beding was clean- bed sette was uncomftable so had to ask for another matress for it.
they are very 1960,s looking adn shabby!
the site itself is in need of a revamp- and if you have a few kids then ur need a bottomless purse as everything costs money- £5 for ice skating and pgl activitys and then £2 ride on fair only free things were park and swimming- and if you have read like me new pool- then ur in for a shock!- pool is very dated(and boring) NO NEW POOL
blue coats were lovley and so were site staff- and cant knock evening entertainment- was fab and kids loved it- day time- well wasnt a lot on considering its half term!
food in venues wasnt up to much- resturant has been modanised- looks nice but food was warm and tasteless- chip shop and caseys whistlestop- well yuk!!!(kids words not mine)
in a nut shell..if you get a good price holiday and your not to fused bout eating on site or the rooms being to clean then go for it- but id never go back and were not the fussiest of people- have 5 kids ageing from 7- 14 and they were bored- we spent most of day off site in rhyl and came bk for a splash in the pool bite to eat and off to the club rooms til bedtime- we paid £600 for the week and for that i expected a little more
back to brean for us!

★★★☆☆

written by on 07/08/2010

After booking a 3 night break, then reading reviews I wasnt sure whether we had done the right thing, so armed with cleaning materials and my own bedding we went. As we arrived the staff we spoke to was pleasant and polite. Our classic apartment was ready for us at 2pm. We asked for a upper apartment and I must say we were pleasently suprised, IT WAS CLEAN, no cleaning materials needed. The only thing I would say was dirty was under the taps in bathroom, kitchen was spotless. The bedding was clean and pressed, just one small hole in sheet near the hem so not a problem. Plenty of hot water, although shower is on a timer so keep pressing button as you shower. Bed settee was clean and double bed in bedroom was comfortable and clean. No smells from our apartment. The entertainment was very good, the blue coats work very hard and are brilliant with the children. Didnt make the most of on site activities, except the fun bikes and ice skating. If we had read the reviews before we booked I honestley dont think we would have gone, but we had a wonderful weekend and will be going back so we were glad we went. Dont expect too much, its not the ritz its a holiday camp and it does need updating, we could have gone round with a fine tooth comb and pulled it to bits but it was much better than we expected. We enjoyed our stay and will return in the future.

★★★☆☆

written by on 01/08/2010

We haved returned from pontins at Prestatyn today and I think you have to remember that "you get what you pay for". We stayed half boad which was excellent value for money we all had a different meal every night which were always enjoyed.

As a family we enjoyed swimming, ice skating and crazy golf as well as all of the activities and entertainment that go on through the day and night.

Each night we went in to "lunars showbar" instead of the main hall which which we thought was more funa s well as having more room. In there we enjoyed quizzes games and entertainment. Something different every night.

I will admit that Pontins is not the Ritz, but I am sure that everybody is aware of that prior to booking. With realistic expectations we have booked again to go next year and our daughter is already looking forward to it!
