Yet Another Well-deserved Break In Fuerteventura,

Yet another well-deserved break in Fuerteventura, having been to Corralejo twice previously. We meticulously checked through Teletext and then the Internet and picked the Antigua Suites. Top choice!

We saved money by not having the airline meals and sorting out our own transfers to and from the airport. Not impressed with First Choice airlines, as on the outbound flight, the flight crew seemed very disorganised and unsure as to what they were supposed to be doing. Also, it should be mentioned that the amount of legroom leaves a great deal to be desired, as there was so very little. I struggled to get comfortable, and I am only 5'8"!! Still, it's only a 4 hour flight!

Just a note: If you are to stay in the Elba Hotels complex, which is made up of the Jorg , Antigua and Castilla Aparthotels, the reception is located in the Antigua suites, but is manned 24 hours by English speaking staff.

We stayed in a 1 bedroom, self catering apartment, which was excellent. It was very clean, good furniture, very comfortable and so much space. We were expecting as much, as the reviews were good. Just the 2 of us, but there was a large sofa, lots of room in the bedroom (twin beds pushed together), clean and large bathroom with soap and shampoo etc., and clean towels.

Kitchen was OK, with 2 electric rings, AND a toaster and a kettle! Unusual, as we have tended to have found that these are normally hired from reception on previous holidays.

Pools in each complex, which are open to all residents of each complex. The main part of the pool in the Antigua was of a good size and is 1.90 metres deep over about half length; the remainder being 1.40 metres deep. It was never packed, and you can get a decent swim. Next to this is a shallow kiddies' paddling pool. Didn't see any lifeguards, but there was lifesaving equipment.

Sun loungers not locked, but there are signs up reminding guests that these should not be reserved. Human nature, though, meant that they were, but there are plenty. However, if you want a parasol (these are fixed, reed-type shades), you do need to go and get one as early as possible, as there are only a few and if you miss out, you will have to put up with roasting in the sun! Food from the pool bar is simple but freshly prepared and tasty. Usual stuff, like sandwiches (toasted, too), burgers, chips, omelette's, etc. Not too expensive, either. Staff friendly, and although I tried the language, I am not very good, so I was helped by their good grasp of English!

As a holiday is what you make of it, there is as much or as little to do as you want. On site the staff organise games during the day (archery, volleyball, water polo, darts and pool etc.) and there was evening entertainment for families. We wanted a nice, relaxing holiday, so chose not to join in with the games, and as we were self-catering, we chose to go out each evening for our meal.

There are a good choice of restaurants in the town, and each was very relaxed with no rush to get rid of you! Food was good and freshly prepared. Nice touch with the honey brandy when you get the bill in some restaurants! One or two electronics shops selling cut-price cameras, etc. Don't be fooled by their promises of cheap goods. I think the stuff is OK, but it is a long way to go to take it back. Also, they add money on if you pay with plastic, so the bargain starts to disappear!

Once again, Donna booked our holiday. She used Teletext to get some phone numbers and phoned around. Checked out reviews on this Website and checked the hotel site, too. This year, it was Donna who really needed a relaxing holiday, although I was really looking forward to another one. Once again, she came up trumps with this one. I would definitely recommend the Elba complex to couples and families of all ages. Thank you Donna!
