“The Kiss Coolview 17WS offers good picture quality....”

The Kiss Coolview 17WS offers good picture quality. Relatively easy to opperate. But it broke down within 2 months of purchase plus could not get the TV facility to work. After sales are impossible to get hold of. As I am now stuck with an expensive and inoperable monitor, I'm very disappointed and would not recommend this particular monitor or KISS to anybody.

I must say that this reliability problem, plus the fact that there is no real after sales service is really worrying.
<br>I think you should directly contact the hotline of Kiss and get the product repaired or exchanged.
<br>Personnally, I had to exchange my monitor twice in the two first weeks before I got an "acceptable" product (without taking into account the poor behaviour of the TV software).
<br>I have also remarked that the screen gets "marked" by bright fixed parts of TV pictures (such as the channel logo), and this marking disappears only after a long time (more than 30 minutes).
<br>The first time I remarked it, I was really afraid that this marking would stay for ever ...
<br>This effect, according to a specialist of Sharp (which has very good but expensive LCD TVs), indicates a poorly designed TFT driving circuitry...
<br>This product is now discontinued by Kiss.

I have since managed to return the monitor with a full refund and have replaced it with a totally reliable Phillips TFT widescreen monitor. Sorry, don't have model number to hand but can supply should you require.
<br>Shame about the KISS monitor as thought it was a sexy looking piece of kit.

“Bought a Kiss Coolview as a stop-gap for my Mac, until...”

★★★★☆

written by rmcmanus on 13/08/2004

Bought a Kiss Coolview as a stop-gap for my Mac, until I can afford a full-size 20" tft, and this would then become my bedroom TV.

Generally I must say, for the money it's pretty good. My Mac thinks it's outputting 1280x960, but even with the interpolation required to squeeze that onto the 1280x768 screen, the picture is not bad at all. Not as sharp as perhaps an Apple, Sony or Samsung, but at almost half the price (got it in a PC World sale) of a "premium" brand, it's much more than half as good. Bright, and with a reasonable viewing angle.

I haven't tried it with a video source yet (Sky or DVD) but I did watch some of "Matrix Revolutions" from the Mac, and sitting back a little, the quality was very good. No blur, clean colours, good contrast.

The OSD is very good, but the front-mounted controls, while adding to the aesthetics, are a bit fiddly. The remote is far better for running through the menus, and is a good addition to the package.

Sound is good (not tinny at all, and handles the sound-effects well for a small unit. If like me you have a small house, you'll be watching things through headphones anyway so as not to disturb East-Enders in the living-room, so the speakers will not get a good try until it gets moved to the bedroom.

Set-up was easy (20 mins from opening box to surfing the web including adjustments etc), packing was good, and everything has a good solid quality feel to it - alright, the remote is a little cheap-looking compared to the rest of the kit, but solid enough. Unfortunately while the tilt is good and holds well, there is no swivel, so you have to drag it around the desk to turn it. Also, there appears to be no way to mount it to a VESA-compliant arm, although the stand itself folds right back and has wall-mount points. The stand also may be removable on initial inspection, and so perhaps I can revive my O-grade metalwork and fabricate or adapt a VESA mount.

The manual however was disappointing, but at least amusing. It does tell you most of what you need to know, if you can handle the pigeon-English. Surely they could get them proof-read by someone with English as a first language to iron out the grammar and layout etc? And where can I find out the response times? Not listed anywhere!!!

But, overall, I'm so far happy with this product - time will tell, once I've used it with a video source, but I'm optimistic it will meet my expectations/needs.

“In the store in Paris, which had no antenna signal,I...”

★★★☆☆

written by marceljack on 25/06/2004

In the store in Paris, which had no antenna signal,I was very skeptical if I could use the Kiss Coolview 17WS LCD TFT Monitors TV tuner in France since the user guide (in english only) in the box of the EU model corresponds to the US model and mentions only NTSC-M for the TV standard (US, Japan, Korea).
There is no EU version of the user guide either on the web site of Kiss (there are English, French and Spanish versions, all three for the NTSC model).
However the vendor ensured that it was covering PAL and SECAM, and this proved to be true ... The european product in fact covers almost all world TV standards ... except NTSC-M !
Back home, I found the TV menu not intuitive at all, since the horizontal arrows and the central buttons do not act as you would expect, but this is a minor problem.
What is really more troublesome is the way the TV standards are handled, which shows that the software is a very quick adaption of the monostandard, channel oriented software of the US model: once you have chosen a country, you can only receive the TV standard of this country (you have to go in the menu and change the country if you want to receive another standard, and you lose all your preselections). This is not acceptable in border regions where you can receive off air transmissions of 2 or 3 different standards or even if you have an appliance with a modulator of a different standard than the country you are in (very common in France).
But what is worse is the very bad management of the TV picture formats. Firstly, you can only modify the format from the menu, despite that there are two buttons on the remote for a "zoom" function of very little use. Despite the many options available in the picture format menu, it is impossible to display correctly "letterboxed" films in full screen without a either distorsion or a wrong aspect ratio. You can display correctly 4/3 pictures with the "fill aspect ratio" option, you can fill the screen with a distorted 4/3 picture (panorama) with the "wide" option, you can also display correctly trues 16/9 pictures from DVD or STB with the "normal" option. But when it comes to a letterboxed film (as used by most analog TV broadcasts), there is no option available for an undistorted full screen display, neither from the format menu nor from the zoom. The "anamorphic" option (which probably was intended for this case) does exactly the opposite of what it should by compressing the picture vertically instead of expanding it. This does not correspond to any input format for a TV picture, and is probably a bug in the software ...
There is no SCART (only Cvbs and S-video inputs), which prevents the connection of a Canal+ analog descrambler and also to connect a set-top box or DVD player in RGB mode, but you can see this before you buy the set.
There is no stereo decoder (this is much less obvious from the outside).
No teletext decoder either, therefore no automatic format detection.

The monitor I bought had a strange problem only after 24 hours (a kind of solarization effect on TV as well as PC pictures), and it was exchanged without difficulty by the store where I bought it.
But back home, I realized that this second set had a non uniform "black" background when viewing dark pictures in a dim ambient light.
This is probably due to a "leakage" of the backlight from one corner of the screen...

So I bought this product because of its very nice look, its multistandard TV tuner and the good name of Kiss, but I was very disappointed by the TV functionality mainly due to a very poor TV control software which clearly indicates a total lack of knowledge of the European requirements (TV standards and picture formats).
The product is made in Korea, which can explain partly this situation, but it is unacceptable that a reputable european company (Kiss is based in Denmark) accepts this behaviour for a set to be delivered in Europe.
The fact not to have a proper user manual corresponding to the version sold in Europe is also very symptomatic of a quality control which leaves much to be desired.

Iansviews's Response to marceljack's Review

I cannot agree with this review, taking into consideration the cost of the product and the facilities that it offers one would be hard prest to find anything up to the picture quality offered at this price or indeed at £100 more in cost.
<br>The sound quality is excellent and it does not take long to work out how to accurately set the controls to produce excellent quality images.
<br>What do people want for their money these days!

Kiss indicated me the name of the korean producer of this monitor. The company is named Cynos and their web site is www.digitalcynos.co.kr.
<br>They sell exactly the same product (NTSC model) under their name in Korea where you can find it at 580000 won (approx 400 Euros).
<br>From the user manual which I downloaded, it appears that it handles the TV formats correctly (two letterbox modes) and it has additionally a close captioning decoder (subtitles) and an audio equalizer (bass/treble/balance control).
<br>I wrote Cynos an email about 10 days ago with my complaints about the TV format handling and got no reply so far.

Feedback from Kiss Hotline (very responsive):
<br>-They do not contest any of the critics of my review,
<br>-However they cannot do anything to improve or correct the product because the development of this product is finished ...
<br>I leave this answer to your own judgement.

“The Kiss Coolview 17WS is my first LCD monitor so I...”

★★★★★

written by pwhiting on 27/02/2004

The Kiss Coolview 17WS is my first LCD monitor so I spent a long time choosing. Not only was I taken with its rather stunning looks (you really won't be disappointed) but the picture quality and depth of colour also stood out from many of the other screens running the same demo in the shop. Then i noticed the inbuilt TV tuner and host of video inputs which were lacking on most of the other displays(go check http://www.homecinemalcd.com/lcd_homepage/kiss_homepage/coolview_17ws/coolview_17ws.html). Some LCD's have a better picture but they normally cost more than this baby. I know this next bit is a bit picky but I have found that other LCD's seem to have pretty naff looking control buttons. This can definitely not be said of the coolview. The control buttons are arranged in a circle around the central on/off button which also controls the sound output and the OSD adjustments. Altogether a very stunning unit, packed with features.
