“They are good!”

AA Insurance was excellent when I needed to make a claim. My brother had a stroke (I am next of kin)and was in intensive care - a week before my friend and I were due to travel to Tenerife. The holiday company would not accept a postponement as it was too near departure. There was quite a bit of paperwork for the AA Insurance( Drakefield Insurance) however was completed they dealt with the claim quickly and effectively. I was really pleased with the outcome.

“Good insurance”

Broke my leg while skiing in Switzerland, last winter. Got to call them right afterwards and I got specific instructions on what to request from the hospital administration. When I got back, I submitted all the papers and got a whole refund, but the process took a while (about 3-4 weeks). Thankfully, the staff was very helpful.

“Helpful. Prompt payment.”

Rushed by ambulance to A and E whilst on holiday in France last year (August 2012). Spent 3 days on Cardiology ward whilst condition was stabilised. Contacted insurance company as soon as admitted to hospital. On return to UK all expenses covered by Drakefield (AA) - this was the 20% not covered by EHIC. Would recommend.

“AA Travel insurance Review”

★★★★☆

written by 76RedChris on 30/03/2012

I purchased AA Travel Insurance (underwritten by a company called Drakefield Insurance) back in October 2011 to cover my four-month backpacking trip to South Africa. Unfortunately I required medical treatment for a chest/heart problem whilst in Johannesburg and sought assistance at the nearest medical centre. As is common practice I had to pay up front and then seek recompense from my insurer. My total bill was +/- £200. AA Travel Insurance provide you with a credit card size information card on which is listed a 24hr emergency medical helpline. As I had been suffering with my condition for a few days and had previous sought basic over-the-counter medication I did not believe my situation merited 'emergency' status. To put things in context, had I been in the UK I would've visited my GP rather than go to A&E. In addition the number provided was a UK '0845' number which suggested the 'joy' of going through a call centre in a supposed emergency situation. I had no desire to use someone else's cell phone to make an international call to be told I was "caller number 45" in a 3hr call centre queue when the medical staff were keen to have me assessed and treated. I contacted AA Travel Insurance via email the following day to be told in a rather brusk manner that my apparent failure to contact the 'emergency medical helpline' could "affect my claim". Nonetheless on my return to the UK I downloaded the appropriate forms and pursued my claim. The forms are typically detailed and repetitive, and totally irrelevant in places, but I posted my completed forms together with my original receipts confirming my treatment costs. Approximately one week later I received a letter from Drakefield Insurance acknowledging my claim and less than 4wks later I received a cheque for the full amount of my claim. No hassles, no aggravation and a thoroughly efficient service. My only minor gripes would be that their initial response to my email correspondence was less than reassuring and strongly suggested at a difficult claim procedure, and that they appear to have calculated my claim at the current exchange rate rather than the one relevant to the time of my outlay which has me marginally out of pocket. But I can only go off my own experiences with AA/Drakefield Insurance and, whilst I would say their initial communications hinted at a potentially problematic claim, they paid up promptly and efficiently.

There are several companies in the marketplace that effort to befool blameless public and run away with their money. For that reason, it is better to check the legal and qualified status of the company before hiring it.

@Desand1's....I would also consider using AA/Drakefield for future trips too and am delighted my review has pointed you in their direction. Of course I hope you have no need to call upon their services on your upcoming vacation but, based on my sole experience with their product, I would be confident that, should the unfortunate occur, they would fulfil their duties towards you....

Sounds to me that you were treated quite fairly by AA/ Drakefield. It would have been quite simple to say that to start with. But then I see below that you are a lawyer and it makes sense. Many lawyers like yourself feel compelled to spew a lot of words and essentially say nothing, just to convince themselves they have something to say. I will remember AA/ Drakefield for my next vacation.

Oh dear 'Guest' 26/7/2012.....seems anyone whose opinion differs from yours warrants an abusive comment. The exchange rate was, in my opinion, a valid point to highlight and the initial manner in which I was treated also relevant to my review. The key really being "in my opinion"...as with all reviews. And to dismiss another of your baseless assumptions, as an attorney I dutifully read ALL small print. So, to conclude, taking into account my first-hand experience of AA Travel Insurance I believe they entirely merit a high rate, but not the maximum available rating.

Not sure what your problem is, looks 2 me as if the company you quoted and the AA did as they had 2 do. And whatever happened 2 u re your claim will have been mentioned in your original application /claims form (small print) the ones u probably did not bother 2 read. U got what you expected and 2 rabbit on about the exchange rate is total rubbish on your part my experience of insurance companies is that they do not settle that quick so next time you run into good service like that do not complain about nothing get a life!! And give the appropriate marks FULL

The AA Travel Insurance website seems to have had a complete overhaul... much more competitive product and pricing than when I last looked at using them...nice to see a major brand available at 'online' prices!

Myself and my husband had Annual Travel Ins. and were due to go away for a weekend trip to Bulgaria. We both fell ill, couldn't go away and after sending AA our doctor's paper, we were compensated for the full amount of the trip.
