Whereas most films dealing with adultery provide a reason for the infidelity, Unfaithful doesn't. Viewers must decide for themselves why Lane takes such a risk. As Richard Gere said while promoting the film: "Even if you play by the rules in life, the universe has its own set of rules and they will screw you up every time."
