★★★★★

written by on 07/02/2008

I bought my MG ZR 160 vvc about a year ago and it handles very well. I've made a couple of modifications and I think it's one of the best hatches out there! It's definitely better than the Corsa and new Astra, as for the type r's, they are nice cars, but the zr is generally more atractive (especially in trophy blue!) and as for the performance aspect against the civic type-r, fifth gear tested them both out and even got 2 racing drivers to review and race them, and the ZR came out on top! If all you people that think the type-r is better, you're only lying to yourselves.. you can even check youtube for the review by fifth gear!

written by rago121121 on 06/01/2008

The standard tyres and suspension give good road grip. 0-60 happens in 7.4s, 1st takes you up to 40 mph with ease, 2nd hits 70 mph.

That much power coming out of a 1.8 litre without a turbo is something to shout about.

I bought mine in 08/07 on a 05 plate. It runs well with no problems, juicy when you put your foot down. Over all, I think that the MG ZR 160 is a good buy,I am very happy!

Loved this car since the day I picked it up even if it has spent a couple of trips on a break down truck! Fun, playful, great handling hot hatch.

This MG ZR 160 is all round general fun and reliable car for all the family. Would recommend anyone to buy one. Quick, reliable, economical, head turner, fun to drive but also very practical for a family car. Engine slightly noisy, build quality OK.

written by zedsdeadbaby on 13/09/2006

We got our pearl black MG ZR 160 three weeks ago and I think it is just brilliant! Ok, the panel fit isn't the best (it hasn't been dinged though) and the interior rattles away as the tight suspension finds every hole in the road, but it takes me back to mkI Golf GTi hot hatch days. It has a rawness about which I love, a nice tappy engine sound and deep exhaust which howls when you get it up past 4000rpm. It torque steers under hard acceleration but doesn't tramline & feels like it's set up just right. When the family is in it, it drives like a normal car but when I go out for a pint of milk, it turns into a tarmac chewing beast! I hate the key, it feels like it's going to snap every time I unlock the petrol cap and all the speakers need upgrading if only to drown out the noise of the rattly cabin but they're so cheap you'd be stupid to pass one up. Oh & it's definitely not a Rover. Go for the face lift model.

written by zedsdeadbaby on 08/09/2006

We've only had the MG ZR 160 for a fortnight but I'm already making excuses to go out for milk, papers, etc & taking the scenic route. The last 'hot' car I had was a Seat Cordoba SX Coupe 2.0 16v which I loved but the 160 beats it hands down. Yes, the bad points are as I've listed but that only adds to the appeal for me, think MK1 Golf GTi & you're there, in essence. Its torque steers, the engine howls over 4000rpm & the suspension rattles your fillings out. Brilliant!!! There should be a Smiles Per Gallon rating on this tarmac chewing beast, it's raw & basic, just how a hot hatch should be. The insurance is cheap at £340 comp with 6yrs NCD & although its too early to comment on reliability, you only have to Google parts & tuners to see there's no need to worry on that score. Buy one now.

written by DEISCORPUS on 22/08/2006

I would thoroughly recommend this MG ZR 160 car to anyone with a sense of fun. I feel 18 again every time I drive it. You will have to go and find your own MG cos this one ain't for sale and it never will be. MG/Rover haven't changed the design very much over the years because there's no need. They got it right the first time.

★★★★★

written by Winged 1 on 22/11/2005

As my MG ZR 160 is nearing the happy side of 200 bhp. I have to say every time I drive it I have a huge smile on my face, it tuns heads every where I go.
The handling is excellent the engine pulls more and more the harder you rev it and when the engine is as good as what it is you can't help putting the foot down (the whole time).
I have to say anyone who slags the MG off doesn't know what a real car is and if they want to drive around in Astra's and Civic's for the rest of their life's its their loss I say. For the price you can get a ZR for now I would say go and get one now as they are excellent value for money and top notch cars.

Having owned two ZRs (and even just the 105 variant) I have to say they're vastly underrated.
Don't crash it though - you can't get body panels and bonnet landing panels for love nor money, so mine's been written off from a minor accident. Tried all sorts of wholesalers and retailers too. Not happy about it.
In fact I've just bought a new Astra - very nice and more refined than the ZR but I really miss the fun of the MG...

I received my MG ZR at the end of July, and I have never enjoyed driving so much!! I used to drive a 1.2 Renault Clio, but the ZR knocks this off the block. It holds the road really well, and I have kept up with quite a few sporty cars on the dual carriageway. Even though I only have the basic model, it still draws a few stares. I have fixed the stereo problem with just getting a new one fitted, and the original speakers hold their quality with a more powerful unit. The only problem so far is that I had to take it back for a wheel alignment within a month, but that's probably due to poor road surfaces where I live. There is plenty of space in the boot to fit a pram, as well as having a CD changer in there too.

With X POWER modifications i have full warrenty, a lovely progressive road car and an awsome track day car, all for the total price of £15,500. i have had no real problems with the MG ZR 160 and even though the car is 20mm lower than standard, because the suspension was developed through MG from Ebaich the ride is firm yet still slightly forgiving. the car does not feel like it simply has lowering springs. I would recommend this car to all but seriously think about that suspension, it makes all the difference!!!!

Bought the MG ZR 160 when they first came out, so its going on for 3 years old now, I've had no problems aprat from the boot not shutting which happened a few months ago and was fixed by the dealer in under 10 mins. Car has 40K+ on the clock and hasn't missed a beat (and boy has it been thrashed). I still love this car after 3 years of driving. Says it all really

I brought the car second hand with 70k on the clock which I only just had the money for but once I test drove it I was hooked. Great acceleration even at the top end and with that mileage, good grip round the corners - well balanced.
So even if you have teething problems at the start dont worry, this car just gets better with age.

The MG ZR 160 is a drivers car no doubt about it. The car has presence on the roads and deserves respect as it can take on most hot hatches/saloons out there. The seats are great as is the twin exhaust that sounds sweet. Road holding and sheer power for a 1.8 are better than you could hope for. A true British sports car and worth every penny. 18 months I have had this car from new and I still look back at it now each time I leave it anywhere, now can you honestly say that about the car you drive now?

★★★★★

written by pogmartin on 03/02/2004

My previous car was a Saxo and before that a Civic. I was considering going back to Honda for a Type R but my girlfriend had recently bought a 2nd hand ZR 105 (the base model). After driving that and being rather impressed I decided to try out the 160, which I have owned for about 6 months now.

Do not buy a hot hatch until you try this car! And do NOT listen to the press who moan about this or that. This is the best car I have ever driven.

I'm supposed to be specific so, in order of preference: Road holding (superb), steering (super superb), engine (ditto - sounds great and bags of power), exhaust (sounds spot on woooooow), interior - I think it's fine, solid (not plasticky), no steering column audio stick but then I always fit after-market stereos anyway, and so should you!

And yes this car gets lots of looks (the ladies adore it). And as per previous reviews it's British and that counts for summat too.

I love this car - it looks good and its just as great to drive. My previous car was a VW GTi which developed one fault after another. I decided I would never buy another VW and after a lot of looking arround I chose an MGZR 160VVC in metallic black. I've done 5,000 miles and so far I have not been disappointed. The best thing I like about this car is its British!

Fast As a cheetah, can keep up with most things on the road and sayin that i have kept up with a lot of performance cars, as for the focus RS that car tends to get rather small in my rear mirror, and i cant wait for the 1.8 turbo unit to be bought out and there is talk about putting a 2liter KV6 under the bonnet now that sounds interesting. The only thing i can say about it is dont underestimate what power it has got cos you might be a bit embarised if you challenge 1. Also you will find you do become a bit popular if you do like i did and have the light sensative paint, also there are a few more mods under the bonnet cranking the power upto a staggering 280-300bhp and i think NOS is the next stage.

Do you have any MG merchandise? I have a MG baseball cap from the official MG site. What do you think of the new in production MG Xpower SV?

I don't agree with most if the chumps on here, like I said on my review everyone hates the MG ZR until they drive one,and as for racing BMW's I have raced 2, a 318is and a 735, for those of you who don't know what that is its a 3.5 v8,admitably on the top end it would beat me but 1/4 mile not a chance, the ZR isn't made for top end its more of a circuit car,and those of you who say civic type R, Clio 172, Cupra R will smoke the ZR, it is evenly matched buy all these cars so what if they have more BHP,the ZR 160 is very quick and will give any of the listed cars a spanking, also you will pay a lot more for the others too, stop chatting a load of rubbish and try racing me in my ZR,you will only embarrass yourself!

Wiseguise's Response to 80983_Blade.'s Review

Look, lets be brutally honest here. The ZR160 is an OK car for the money, but thats about it. After working for MG Rover directly, test driving the cars in various tune form from prototype phases, owning and subsequently selling the car (a lemon) I feel I am qualified to write here.

What you do get is reasonable power and handling, but try chasing a Cupra or Cupra R Leon, or a Civic type R round an Island, wet or dry, and you will lose. EOS.

Try staying with one from the lights, wet or dry, and you will lose. EOS.

Try a combination point to point sprint against either and you will lose.

Enough said??

As for the one above who thinks BMW's cant keep up .... what was it flashing its lights? I noticed no model number. At a guess it would be a C1 !!!

Come on you lot, this is a review centre and reality is supposed to play a big part. Suggesting that the ZR160 is in the league you hope and wish for it to be in v's the one it is actually in is a big difference.

I have friends and Ex colleagues who drive a range of the X Power cars, good drivers, test drivers and just plain old value for money drivers. Each one of them knows the ZR160 will be eaten alive by anything in the Super Hatch bracket, Focus RS, Cupra, Type R, RenaultSport Megane 225 etc etc. It is not meant to rival these models. It is a hot hatch, a different category altogether.

So, please, please dont be misguided by some comments above. The MG is an OK car with an OK engine with a nice turn of pace. It is not a serious rival of anything I have seen it compared to above pretty much.

Buy it for value for money, buy it if you dont care about residual values, buy it if you can get on the friends and family scheme, buy it if you like how it looks, how it handles, how it goes, or any other good reason

..... but dont buy it to try and chase a Super Hatch, an M3, S3, etc etc. You will be upset.

OK- I think this car has a great engine & handling but come on, there are quite a few cars for the same price that will thrash it.
I havent driven it but I have driven a Civic Type R and I doubt it would beat that. Even my 205 mi16 will beat it- 185bhp=203bhp per tonne, the ZR has around 125bhp per tonne, not impressive at all.
Clio Cup-
Focus RS
Civic Type R
Leon Cupra 212 or 225
I think it's great this is a British car but it needs improving, hopefully there will be a revised version that will sort this out.
By the way, I think the MR2 TURBO REV 3 is probably the best all round car you can get for the money.

I own an MG ZR and the sooner the contact hire period through my firm finishes the better. This car is an absolute lemon. Anything that can go wrong has. Starter motor hanging out of block, power steering fluid leeked out. Side sills put on 4 times!!! as they kept coming off just a few examples.

As for performance its ok and looks great. But this argument and competition between Fritz cars and MG's well there is no competition Beemers and Mercs are in a different league. Its ok saying MG's are cheap, they are cheap, cheap and tacky and poorly built.

German cars are built to last and fast. I hate to say it and it breaks my heart I love British cars but cars from the continent are better period!

I have only just bought my MG ZR 160. I would not buy a german car for all the money in the world - I do not like them for various reasons. Maybe they are fast maybe they are nice driving down the autobahn. Still no cars!. Back in the 60th (yes guys I am that old" I owned a MGA twincam. Never had so much fun then and I tell you - shifting from a styled Peugeot 206 GTi to the ZR - is not only a nostalic trip It is again fun to drive a car that stands out. Really!

Where do you get the idea a 160bhp MG can beat any BMW? My BMW Z3 Msport destroyed a MG zr160 with ease.I even slowed down abit, then killed it again! Oh and as for the RSfocus, you are joking right? there around the 200bhp mark, so unless your running NOS, keep dreaming mate.
Just for your info i seen one of them new ZT's being road tested, there 340+bhp and look ok, the driver gave me a funny look so when we got to bristol road near MG's plant i thought i would show him MSPORT power!.I dont think he has ever seen a car pull of so quick, my baby does 0-60 in 4.2 seconds, and yes, it has been slightly tuned but even as standard no MG is capable of keeping up with any of the Msports.
So, what about the MG ZT/ZS/ZR's then? (not to mention the expected V8 version of the ZT with around 380+BHP on tap, in a very, very mild state of tune) the 800 Vitesse Sport? 620Ti? 220 Turbo Coupe/GTi? these not fast and sharp handling cars? oh that's right, they are! let's not forget girls, the Bi-turbo Metro 6r4, with around 700bhp! and around 480 for the n/a car, not such a good argument I know, as you don't get to see them that often, but there is nothing outside a single seater in the CART or F1 circus which could beat it!

I have a 160 and I agree it is very fast and has superb handling ... I can't wait until they bring out the turbo.. I will be buying one.... If you have one take it to janspeed and get the extra 20bhp it costs around £1000... Your right about the interior, it needs an update.....

How can you say that a zr 160 is faster than a focus RS? the focus goes quicker 0-60 by at a second and has a higher max speed. the zr looks nice but it isnt quick!
Just a little list of cars that would wipe that smile off your face (they arent even sports cars either!)

- Volvo V70 T5 (estate car)
- Audi RS6 (estate car)
- Saab 95 Aero (estate car)

fair enough the zr has a 0-60 time of 7.3 seconds but anyone of the above cars would thrash the Mg, if you had a 60 000 pound x-power then i'd respect your opinion. even then though the new volvo v70 R (estate) would thrash you, pip yourself against the big boys and you zr drivers come unstuck!
race a mini cooper s, you'll have a good view of its rear end, something you are familiar with as you speak out of it.

Fantasy land!!! O.k so you think that your 160bhp ROVER is faster than a 215bph Focus? Hmmm! I test drove a 160bhp ZR and it felt like the origional 1.4 16v!

How can you say this, at the end of the day you are driving a Rover, a Rover chasis. I mean come on Rovers arent the most inspiring of cars, bought by older people and used as mobile chicanes. BMW's garbage?? hmmm I think you have been with your Rover too long and are blinded. Hey maybe you could swap your car in and get a Metro, because a Metro is the Best car that was ever produced, well in your eyes probably
