“Upgraded to the Sony Ericsson P800 from a Nokia 6100. ...”

★★★★★

written by floating goat on 02/08/2004

Upgraded to the Sony Ericsson P800 from a Nokia 6100. Although this phone has been around for a while it is still very good. Most of the early glitches appear to have been sorted out by successive software modifications and my phone has only crashed once since I bought it.
The phone syncs effectively with outlook allowing me to keep my calendar and contacts on my phone at all times - which I have found to be one of the most useful functions on the phone.
Being able to surf the internet on the large screen is also a bonus - I can now use streetmap to find myself on the odd occasion I get lost!
As a phone it has good sound quality, but the reception fluctuates quite a bit - although still good it isn't as strong as the Nokia 6100.
All in all though a fantastic piece of gadgetry and I would thoroughly recommend it.

“I have had a lot of mobiles but never have I come...”

★★★★★

written by BOB. on 22/08/2003

I have had a lot of mobiles but never have I come across something so unbelievably fantastic! It's clean lines and bright colouring make it one of the most desirable mobiles on the market today. The large 4096 colour touch display is just as good if not better than that of any 65k colour phones. The P800 takes personalising your mobile to another level with the ability to create your own screensavers, wallpapers and colour theme. Software is available to turn the already brilliant digital camera into a camcorder. It has a memory stick port, which was brought to the collaberation by Sony, and gives you access to an unlimited amount of memory. You can view microsoft documents (Word, Excel, Powerpoint) on the P800 making it more like a pc than a phone! There is no end to the possibilities with this phone!

Written on: 18/09/2003

The P800 boasts most features including an MP3/Movie player, camera, synchronisation with PIM such as MS Outlook and looks like it may just pull it off. A phone the size of a standard house brick must be packed with technology I thought. Well, the phone does do what it says on the box and for that I cannot criticise Sony. However, I suspect there will be two distinctive camps in the P800 debate - those that have previously owned such as a Comapq IPAQ and those that have only used mobile phones. The IPAQ users will immediately fall out with the awful screen and feel of the 800. It is too small to actually view documents on and in truth offers no discernable advantage over the Sony T610. The 800 looks promising when first switched on but quickly reveals it's true colours as fat phone without the great personality which would rescue you from the jibes of friends and colleagues.
<br>
<br>If you have owned a decent PDA such as the 400mhz IPAQ don't go near the P800 - even with a nine foot blue tooth connection. It will dissapoint I guarantee - If you have only ever used a mobile phone and can live with the comical design then you will probably be very impressed. It is - as stated previously on this site - a poor attempt at a PDA. Get yourself a T610 - very small, sexy looking and capable phone happy to bluetooth to with Outlook/Lotus.

“This phone is amazing. I was very unsure about buying...”

★★★★★

written by Rachael Bull. on 22/08/2003

This phone is amazing. I was very unsure about buying one, so I read loads of reviews and made up my own mind. One main problem i had with the P800 was the larger than normal size and of course the price! But after visiting a local phone retailer, I was able to insert my existing sim card and try out the phone in the shop. I was pleasantly suprised by the size, not nearly as big as everyone makes out, although for socialites, I would recommend keeping a smaller (less expensive) phone solely for going out at night. Although, the excellent camera would make deciding to leave it at home a difficult decidsion to make!
The versaltility of this phone has to be it's best feature, the online shop for the P800 (located on Sony Ericsson Page) is great, yes you have to actually pay for some of the software and games but they mostly only cost £3-4 and are really good. As these downloads are solely for the P800 you have no problems with compatibility as you normally have with mobile gaming. The docking station you receive in the box is stylish and doesn't look out of place on your desk. The PC software provided allows you to back up and store all the settings on your phone in case the worst should happen. Most games are downloaded onto your PC and then you install it via the docking station onto the handset. The game or software icon remains on your PC so you can reinstall it as many times as you like allowing you to fully customise your handset. Yuo can send pictures, midi files etc from the PC directly to your phone and it doesn't take forever like you might expenct. To install a game yesterday, it took about 5 mins to download onto Pc which can be done while you are surfing and about 2 mins at the most to put it on the phone.
Initially I thought that actually writing on the touchscreen would be a novelty that would soon wear off but the more I use it the easier and quicker it is. Just read the operating manual before you try or you can get quite disheartened trying to write something. Once you get used to inputting letters numbers and symbols as they want you to it is fantastically quick and easy. (Tip- to delete a character draw a horizontal line to the left like back space) This advice would have saved me many frustrated minutes thinking that i'd bought a piece of crud.
I would highly recommend the P800 for anyone who has a PC and enjoys downloading and customising. If you don't forsee yourself using most of the features as the excel and word viewers then don't waster your money as there are other phones out there which don't cost as much and could probably suit you just as well.
If you can see your self giving the phone a chance and downloading the extras then the P800 is amazing. Oh yeah and the free solitaire game which is preloaded is so addictive it takes classic gaming to a whole mew level!

I hope this has been useful to any prospective buyer and in the end do what you want and make up your own mind.

written by Gurinder Singh. on 22/07/2003

Some people say a phone is for making and receiving calls, and some say a PDA should ONLY do PDA fuctions, and a cd player...for playing music! I don't think so! The Sony Ericsson P800 lets you listen to music while you work, or you can call someone while you are browsing the net, taking pictures or maybe doing some work! Good stuff!

“I only got the Sony Ericsson P800 while I was waiting...”

★★★★★

written by HellFire. on 24/06/2003

I only got the Sony Ericsson P800 while I was waiting for the Motorola V600 to come out but after 5 minutes of use I was addicted so I will be keeping it. "Motorola V600 LOL" This phone can do almost anything plays mp3's and movies, you can even fit a whole film onto a 128 MB stick if you compress it enough and still looks OK. It also look cool to and the hand writing recognition works very well even if you use your finger instead of the stylus, the battery also lasts a long time I was using it all day with Bluetooth and the battery never died not bad considering the size of the screen. The only thing that I find a bit odd is the speaker is at the back so if you got it face up like you normally would the ringtone is not as loud as it could be, but it is very loud with it faced down. Would I recommend this phone well if you're a grandma then you would be better off with something basic like a Samsung V200 but for everyone else whether you want it for business or multimedia you won't go wrong getting the excellent p800 HIGHLY RECOMMENDED?

“Where can i start? This phone has everything. It is...”

★★★★★

written by Gazz. on 04/06/2003

Where can i start? This phone has everything. It is top of the range and will be for some time. The price tag is often high but if you are willing to pay more for line rental then you can get it cheaper, even free!!! (phones4u) The camera is the best i have seen since the nokia 7650. The pictures when transferred to pc via serial station (supplied), infra red or bluetooth are suprisingly good quality. You get a free handsfree kit, 3 extra styli.
The phone is larger than average phones these days however this is not an average phone and is suprisingly small and light when you consider the features.
Battery life is very reasonable, i cant stop playing with mp3's, chess, the camera editor, character recognition (which by the way is unbelievably good), but the battery can easily last 2 days.
Built in speakerphone for handsfree or mp3 playback.

Software upgrades are unlimited . i have got msn messenger for it, infra red (so i can control my tv from my phone), a picture editing suite, and a recipie book. (look at the recommended url)

Fantastic phone if you want any info contact me.

i was umming and ahhhing as to whether to buy this phone, thinking that it looked to big, clumsy and cluttered.

Buy this phone, you won't be dissapointed

oh yeah if anyone finds where to get memory stick duo cheap could they let me know? ta

I got the phone free from phone4u on a high tarif and then changed to a lower tarif.
<br>
<br>The memory stick operates just like an extra hard disk in PC, you can install apps, music, documents to the phone memory or memory stick.
<br>
<br>It does synchronise quite well with outlook now that SE have updated their software and can be used as a PDA quite readily.
<br>
<br>Once you get used to the jog dial control it is even easier to make calls than my nokia 7110.
<br>
<br>There are loads of third party applications either free or relatively cheap on the net.

To me, I have found this worth considering. This unit has a nice sturdy design and great features. You can download a free opera browser for it that optimizes pages to fit the screen. The bluetooth functionality works great with my Jabra headset and makes it a bit easier to deal with the slight bulk of the phone (you can keep the phone in your briefcase/jacket/inside pocket). Compared to the other phones in the category such as the palm type phones it is relatively svelt. Great bright color screen.

written by BigMak. on 15/04/2003

This is the best phone I have owned if not the biggest since my One2One Motorola M300! The PDA functions are excellent and are easy to synchronize. Having a 16MB memory card is very useful.

I thought using the stylus would be inconvenient but it is very simple and effective.

The thing that really stands out though is the sound quality is excellent (important in a phone don't you think?.

The thing that bugs me is whether to keep the flip on or off. If you keep it on the phone loses its smooth lines and sex appeal. If you remove it, it becomes problematic if you want to send a text message using one hand ie without the stylus. I'm not sure if using grubby fingers on the screen is a good idea. I find that when speaking on the phone it is too easy for your face to press on the touch screen and cut off the call.

What do others think??

Why does everyone complain about the size. It would be no use as a PDA if any smaller & it's smaller than most phones from only a couple of years ago. Mobiles are actually getting too small to use these days anyway, they get too fiddly.

“The P800 is a stunning phone. ”

★★★★★

written by Drachan. on 27/03/2003

The P800 is a stunning phone.
I remember seeing original press releases in the second to third quarters or so of 2002 and getting very excited about this piece of kit. Everything about it screamed "breakthrough." It is, therefore, a real shame that Sony have done a bit of a "Nintendo" and released their piece of groundbreaking kit so late that it's *almost* run of the mill.. But All is not Lost.

I've owned a fair few gadgets in my time, I was the first person I know to get an Apple Newton (dead dodo, I know) Nokia 8210, Palm Pilot, Siemens SL45, DSL, not to mention games consoles before I matured to the PC arena. The Sony Ericsson P800 really does present itself as the best of the techno-widgets.

The interface itself is good, reminds me of the best parts of the Newton and PalmOS, which is neither surprising nor unwelcome.
The OS (Symbian, via UIQ) facilitates an "open page" type presentation, this means that things are saved as you write them.. Much like a Mac.
The only problem with this is if you mess up, you cry.. Not all areas have "Undo" yet.

There are a few things that could be improved.. It's a shame the screen looks so washed out, it makes camera pictures difficult to judge. It's also a shame that even without much use you really need to charge the beast every night.

Good thing that the docking cradle is so lovely then.. The phone just slides on, suspended as if in mid-air by the unique design. A satisfying beep emits from the phone and software (unless you disable it) asks if you want to back the phone up.. Nice touch for the business minded.

Games are still a premium.. Not many free ones around but $7 US (around £4 GBP) doesn't seem extorsionate for something to keep ones mind off a boring train journey for a half hour.

The audio player needs a tiny bit of tweaking, something I'm sure will be done soon.. The sound is very crisp and satisfying and the headphones are accurate, yet the closest you can get to shuffle is changing whether files are sorted by date, size, filename or type. The software could do with an equaliser too.. I like lots of bass for example!

POP3/SMTP access is pretty damned good.. As is web access either with the integrated browser or Opera.

The contacts list, call list etc. all work like a charm and the jog wheel is something I don't think I could ever live without.. It's a five way controller and works like a charm.

Pen accuracy far exceeds my old PalmV. It's just lovely.. Jot (handwriting recognition) has its flaws but does the job nicely. It's very very similar to Palm's "Graffiti" but with a few idiosyncracies.

For anyone that wants a palm pilot and a phone all in one, this is the solution. It may not have a 875682648283462 colour screen or come in 973497 different press-on colours, but who wants to lug an inconvenient pda around or a cellphone that looks like a VCR remote-contol designer's idea of a practical joke anyway?

The P800 is a wonderful, exciting piece of technology.. It is undoubtedly 6 months late (the screen says it all) but it's still years of design and innovation ahead of the rest. I just can't wait for Symbian to release a system update :D

“What do you look for in a phone? Make and receive...”

★★★★★

written by Tech Freak. on 10/03/2003

What do you look for in a phone? Make and receive calls, SMS, a phone book of course. But what if you could be in your office without really being there? This is the P800.

The features on this phone are so impressive and all of them work so well. It is a phone with PDA functions. It has 12MB Internal memory to store all contacts, user data, images, messages, third party applications etc. And the supplied Memory Stick Duo gives it virtually "unlimited" external memory!!

With the cool open Symbian OS, the operation is so smooth and features are very accessible and easy to use.

It has a 208 x 320 pixels (Flip Open) and 208 x 144 (Flip Closed) Electroluminiscent, Anti Reflective, Touch Screen with 4,096 Colour depth!

Has a built-in camera which supports pictures upto 640 x 480 px with 16 million colors. Unlike the Nokia, the pictures taken using the P800 are crisp and perfectly balanced. A Picture Album for easy viewing. Supports JPEG, BMP, PNG, GIF (including animated), MBM, WBMP.

Has a built in Audio Player which supports MP3, WAv, AU, AMR, G-MIDI with 16 voice Polyphony RMF.

Has a built in Video Player which supports MP4.

It supports download of third party applications (Java, C++) which means u can download games and applications. The possibilities are endless!

Comes with Chess, Men In Black, Stunt Run games installed and u can add as many games as u like.

The built-in browser supports HTML, CHTML, XHTML, WBXML, WML.

Has "Flight mode" so u can still use your PDA functions in areas where phone use is restricted!

Supports Word, Excel, Powerpoint, PDF, Rich Text Format, Project, Visio, WordPerfect, Corel Presentations, Lotus 123, ZIP, Quatrro Pro, CGM, PCX, Fax... etc, etc...

And then of course it is also packed with standard stuff like SMS, EMS, MMS, e-mail (POP3/SMTP/IMAP3/MIME attachements), Wap 2.0, GPRS, HSCSD.

Has Speaker phone.

Has Bluetooth and Infrared for connectivity. Has all the basic PIM functions like contacts, calendar, synchronization.

I, actually, might have left out a few of the features. But now you decide, is there something else u need?

Take it from me, the P800 is the absolute best.

“I am very pleased with this phone. I have had it for...”

★★★★★

written by Brucie. on 06/03/2003

I am very pleased with this phone. I have had it for two weeks now and am still enjoying just playing with it. I have never given so many people demos of a gadget before. Everyone wants to try this phone out; family, colleagues, even a complete stranger on the train asked me about it! They were all impressed.

I was pleasantly surprised when I opened the box to find Sony/Ericsson have included a few extra goodies. As well as the phone, battery, instructions, sim card, and charger there were 2 CDs (containing the PC software suite and extra games, wallpaper images, sound effects and so-on), a desktop stand allowing connection to your PC via USB which can also be used as a desktop charger, a 16MB memory stick duo card, 3 extra styli, handsfree headphones, a memory stick adapter card and a pretty nice case and wrist strap.

So how does the phone perform? Well, lets get the boring bit out of the way first. During phone calls the sound quality is good, it hasn't dropped any calls, and the navigation to the contacts application is easily achieved using the touch screen, the 5-way jog-dial, or the keys on the flip. Right now the fun stuff! The P800 has a built in camera, plays games, MPEG4 videos and MP3s. It gives you full WWW access (download the free Opera browser from the sonyericsson web site), has a touch-screen with handwriting recognition, a calendar, you can send and receive emails and MMS messages. And if all that isn't enough you can install your own applications via the USB link or bluetooth.

It would take 3 pages to describe all the applications, so I'll just give you the edited highlights. The camera takes reasonable quality pictures at up to 640x480, the results are not brilliant in low light conditions, but its great for those moments where you wish you had a camera, but previously wouldn't have had one handy. The video and MP3 player applications are good, but with around 20MB of free memory to play with there's not enough space for long videos or more than a few songs. The handwriting recognition is very good, even with my terrible writing! This can be used for all text input (SMS, emails, to-do list, calendar etc.etc.) and really speeds things up compared with a normal mobile keypad. You can pop up a QWERTY keyboard on screen as an alternative, but the handwriting feature is so good I haven't bothered with it. There is a viewer application for viewing Word, Excel, PowerPoint and PDF files, some games (chess, Stunt Run (a port of Stunt Car Racer from the Amiga/ST I think) a shoot-em-up, and Solitaire), a voice memo recorder and more.

Battery life is good, expect about 4 days under light use, reducing to more like 2 days if used heavily. It supports GPRS which I used a lot more than I thought due to the excellent Opera web browser I mentioned earlier, which gives full web access including pages with frames and JavaScript. Forget about WAP, there is absolutely no point to it now you can get "proper" websites on your phone. Sending and receiving emails is easy, you can even view common attachments on the phone.

I am struggling to find anything bad to say about the P800, although mine did crash twice. This happened in the first 2 days and hasn't happened since, and I think it was caused by a 3rd party application called eMAME that I have installed. Another bad thing, maybe just because it's new here, is that everyone wants to play with this phone. I am fed up of giving demos every day for 2 weeks! Maybe the price is too high for some. I'm sure it will come down eventually but I paid £300 on a contract and got a phone with PDA and MP3 player functionality so you get a lot for the money. I also disliked the ugly plastic flip which comes fitted to the phone but you can remove it completely and just use the jog dial and/or touch screen. The phone looks a lot smarter, and more futuristic without the flip, and I don't miss it at all.

All in all a great phone with lots of features, I have no hesitation in recommending this phone!

It syncs with Outlook OK. However i only use it for storing/editing contacts...occaisionally. Download a little program call p800 remote or some such. This allows you to control you phone using your PC via the USB cable packaged with the phone. I do all my e-mails, contact, messages, picture editing, IM, SMS via my PC and then the handset. Sod Outlook.

A detailed review without the geek factor. Tried it out in a shop today and I have to agree the phome flip looks tacky but once you open it up it began to impress me no end. I have an XDA and I'm sold on this P800 The camera is very good and the operating system is fast. Thanks for your detail and effort which reassure my decision to buy it.

I agree, thank you for such detail, i am also sold. There must be something bad, i have read half a dozen reviews - seems too good to be true. The truth is in the testing.

“This mobile is the best mobile phone i have ever had!...”

★★★★★

written by Chillicrumble. on 04/03/2003

This mobile is the best mobile phone i have ever had! I got it for £500 from carphone warehouse - simfree, the screen is brilliant, there are more features than any other mobile phone i have ever had (and thats alot). I used to have the nokia 7650 but i sold it, that was the best mobile phone i have ever had, but the P800 was 10 times better than that, the camera was so much better, the quality is brilliant! To be fair the price is astronomical for most people - but it is well worth the money. It is also very good for the business users, since it is a mobile phone/PDA it has a very detailed organiser which is perfect for bust scedules. The phone is brilliant i wouldnt say a bad thing about it. You can even use it in hospitals and on aeroplanes!

“After two weeks I'm still more and more pleased for...”

★★★★★

written by Frank Grundin. on 26/01/2003

After two weeks I'm still more and more pleased for each day, that since I each day find new interesting and useful functions.

I like the design of the "phone" (it's so much more than a phone), the manuvearibility in the GUI is very easy to understand. The (I think Sony) Jog Dial button make it possible to do almost everything without touching the numbers or the display.

The touch screen make it possible to have the "phone" as a Palm (calendar) and actually the P800 support what I know so far everything that a Palm has, writing is similar, meetings, tasks and so on is supported.

The games are fun but not so many, but that's is what I think is just a matter of time before it's possible to download other ones.

I also like the way how files are copied from the stationary PC over to the P800. Just do as always, 'Click and drag' the file from say "D:music to the P800:memorystick folder and listen to your favorite Scooter mp3-song. When 'Waiting for Spring and the 'Endless summer' I see forward to use the camera sitting on the baech taking some pictures and then send them to my working friends on the office ;-)

written by Veriy. on 19/01/2003

With large 4096color display, you can do many things that other phone can't. It has camera, bluetooth, infra red, messages(mms, sms, email), java-enabled, flip(duh..!), Li-Polymer Battery, etc..

It takes all night long to study the features of this phone. At the first night I bought this phone, I don't have to charge all night long for initial battery charging, yes.. because it use Lithium Polymer battery.

Try to make a call with this phone, you'll hear a softer sound than other average phone, plus if you use the handsfree.
You get all the best quality stuff in one packages, you don't need to upgrade or buy anymore accessories (unless you are really geek.... :-).

for details, just go to sonyericsson website,
