“'Yo! Bum Rush The Show' must rank as one of Rap...”

'Yo! Bum Rush The Show' must rank as one of Rap music's most impressive debut albums. Recorded in mid-to-late 1986 and released by Def Jam at the beginning of the following year, Public Enemy's first LP heralded a new movement in Hip Hop.
It is comprised of 12 tracks that last a total of only 46 minutes and boasts the tag line: ' The Government's Responsible' on the bottom of the front cover. It's sound is a mesh of politically active speeches, socially concious metaphors and sparse,drum-machine rhythms.
For the avid Hip Hop afficiando this will be a staple part of the CD collection, for the not-so familiar listener this classic of classics will sound dated and raw. Chuck D's now infamous voice was still finding it's perfect pitch, Terminator X hardly got to display his turntable skills (except for the last track, which is a superb slice of his signature beats and scratches) and Flavor Flav's lead vocals on some of the album was probably not the best of idea's as his delivery and timing is even more off than we are used to!
There are some fantastic moments on this album but I think most would agree that musically, it lacks any real substance or longevity. In 2007 it all sounds horribly dated and simple but in 1987 this was way-ahead of it's time. Mark this album for what it did for Public Enemy, Def Jam and Rap Music and not for how old it sounds.
If you can find this cheap (and I think you can), It is excellent value for what is essentially a Holy Hip Hop release.
If you are a casual Rap listener and don't want to delve into the history of the music too much, I would advise that you save your cash and buy P.E.'s second album: ' It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back ' Instead.
Overall you can't go far wrong with early Public Enemy or indeed early Def Jam releases so give it a spin!
